It was painted by Zhang Zeduan, a curt painter fr the emperr during the Nrthern Sng Dynasty.

It captures the daily life f peple frm the Sng perid at the capital, Bianjing, tday’s Kaifeng in Henan.

Qingming Shang He Tu r Alng the River During the Qingming Festival, is ne f the mst famus Chinese paintings in the wrld. It shws the festive spirit and prsperus street scene at the Qingming Festival. The entire piece was painted in the handscrll frmat and the cntent reveals the lifestyle f all levels f sciety frm rich t pr as well as different ecnmic activities in rural areas and the city.

1.Watch the first part t fill in the blanks.
The painting was n a silk scrll. This amazingly detailed painting became a natinal treasure. It is exhibited fr nly brief perids every few years. The characters and bjects in the painting shw life alng the Bian River during the Qingming Festival, a time when Chinese peple visit their ancestr’s graves.
2. Watch the middle part t take ntes abut the details that are displayed in the painting.

Then we see the Rainbw bridge arching ver the river. On bth sides f the river are peple selling fd and drinks, while travelers pass by.
The scene sn becmes mre crwed. The rad beside the river becmes packed with restaurants, and the river becmes full f bats.
There are a few huses and a few peple travelling back t Bianjing.

In the city, there are butcher shps, dctr’s clinics, htel inns, huses, and fabric shps.
Then we cme t the first city gate. Thrugh the gate is passing a line f camels carrying gds.
Sn the city begins t emerge. We see temples, inns, and large huses. The rads are nw filled with peple travelling n ft, and in carts and sedan chairs.
The painting cntains three majr sectins: The right sectin is the rural area f the city. In the middle sectin, there are businesses f all kinds. The left sectin is the urban area arund the city gate.
At the end f the scrll are seals f its previus wners, pems praising the painting’s beauty, and a nte f a shrt bigraphy f Zhang Zeduan.
3. Watch the last part f the vide t answer the questin.
Why is the painting highly valued?
It is nt nly a true wrk f art, it als gives a rare insight int daily life in ancient China.
