Faces, like fingerprints, are unique.Did you ever wonder how it is possible for us to recognize people? Even a skilled writer probably could not describe all the features that make one face different from another.Yet a very young child or even an animal, such as a dolphin can learn to recognize faces.
We also tell people apart by how they behave. When we talk about someone’s personality,we mean the ways in which he or she acts, speaks, thinks and feels make that person different from others.
Like the human face, human personality is very complex. But describing someone’s personality in words is somewhat easier than describing his face.If you were asked to describe what a “nice face” looked like, you probably would have a difficult time doing so.But if you were asked to describe a “nice person”,you might begin to think about someone who was kind, considerate, friendly, warm and so on.
There are many words to describe how a person thinks, feels and acts.Gordon Allport,an American psychologist, found nearly 18,000 English words characterizing differences in people’s behavior. And many of us use this information as a basis for describing or typing his personality.
People have always tried to “type” each other.Actors in early Greek drama wore masks to show the audience whether they played the villain’s(坏人) or the hero’s role.In fact, the words “person” and “personality” come from the Latin, meaning “mask”.Today, most television and movie actors do not wear masks. But we can easily tell the “good guys” from the “bad guys” because the two types differ in appearance as well as behaviors.
1.Why does the author mention the fingerprints in Paragraph 1?
A.To make people learn to recognize faces.
B.To show people have different personalities.

A.People differ in behavioral and physical characteristics.
B.Human fingerprints provide unique information.
C.People’s behavior can be easily described in words.
D.Human faces have complex features.
4.Which of the following is the major point of the passage?
A.Why is it necessary to identify people’s personality?
B.Why is it possible to describe people?
C.How to get to know people?
D.How to recognize people best?

Spanish artist Pablo Picasso(1881-1973)was one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. It was said that everything his brush touched turned to gold. But in truth, his works could be worth more than any precious metal.Picasso created more than 20, 000 works in his life, including two of the world's 10 most expensive paintings.
Between 1907 and 1913, Picasso and his colleague Georges Braque started a revolution(革命)in painting. Before that, paintings were like windows—they were painted to look as if they had depth. You could tell which objects were "close" to you and which objects were "far away". But Picasso and Braque didn't want to paint like that any more. To them, a painting wasn't a window to the world; it was marks and lines on a flat surface. Why, they thought, should an object like a guitar be shown only from one angle(角度)? A guitar can look very different depending on which angle one looks at it from. Their answer was to show all the angles. They broke the guitar up into pieces. Their style of painting is called cubism(立体主义).
But why did they feel such a need to change things? Well, the world around them was changing, too. Science was turning people's ideas upside down. Albert Einstein's theory proved that what we knew about time and space was wrong. The world was becoming different; artists needed to start seeing and painting it differently.
The famous and terrifying painting Guernica(1937)shows a terrible scene during the Spanish Civil War. In the painting, you can actually see the sky falling. Picasso couldn't have painted it without the skills he learned during his cubist period. Breaking a guitar up into pieces was his preparation for showing the world being blown to pieces.
4.What is mainly discussed about Picasso in this article?
A.The high price of his paintings. B.His difficulties in career.
C.The popularity of his paintings. D.His achievements in art.
5.In what way did Picasso and Braque paint?
A.They painted objects with different depth. B.They made their paintings look like windows.
C.They painted an object from different angles. D.They broke objects up into pieces and painted them.
6.What caused Picasso and Braque to start cubism?
A.Einstein's theory. B.The changing world. C.A broken guitar D.Spanish Civil War.
7.Why did the author mention the painting Guernica?
A.To show the theme of Picasso's paintings. B.To express Picasso's anger at the war.
C.To describe the preparations Picasso made before. D.To present the artistic effect of cubism.

It was May 23, 2016. Arnot, the 32-year-old mountain guide, reached the top of Everest without the use of oxygen (O2) equipment. It was achieved after seven years, three previous attempts, and fourteen straight hours of climbing.
After 15 minutes at the top, Arnot began her descent (下坡). Eight hours later, she reached the camp at 7, 600 meters and became the first American woman-and only the seventh woman ever-to successfully reach Mount Everest without oxygen equipment.
Arnot didn't start climbing until she was 19 years old. Money was tight in her family, and climbing mountains never occurred in her mind. After graduating from college, Arnot was invited by her friend to climb a mountain. "It totally changed my life", says Arnot. "I always know that if you want something, you can achieve it, but knowing what you want is a whole different thing," she says. "I am athletic but not competitive. After my first climbing, I knew immediately that mountains are what I want-as that is where I felt home for the first time in my life."
After that first climb, she devoted herself to learning how to climb and move through mountain. It was during her second trip to Everest in 2009 that she first set her sights on a no-oxygen attempt. However, while hiking into Everest Base Camp that year, she hurt her leg and wasn't able to climb without oxygen. In 2013 she nearly made it to the top, but was forced to take oxygen at 8,504 meters while helping another climber.
- On May 23, 2016. Arnot___.
A. spent 8 straight hours climbing B. stayed at the top for 50 minutes
B. made her first attempt to climb Everest D. reached the top without oxygen equipment
- Arnot fell in love with climbing because___.
A. money was no longer a problem to her
B. mountains gave her the feeling of comfort
C. she tried to be more athletic and competitive
D. she wanted to build up her body through climbing
10. What do we know about Arnot's climbing experience?___
A. She took up climbing when she was 19 years old.
B. She has always been a good climber since her childhood.
C. She climbed Everest with her family during her first trip.
D. She hurt her leg badly while helping another climber in 2009.
111. Which of the following can best describe Arnot?___
A. Determined and brave. B. Cautious and honest.
C. Caring and open-minded.D. Confident and creative.
D
How can you tell if someone's lying? The answer is, they're probably not.
Traditional economics says that people are rational(理智的)beings who will lie if it's to their advantage. A recent university study has shown that, actually, we're pretty honest --especially when we're at home.
Researchers in Germany phoned people at home and asked them to toss(投掷) a coin. There was a strong financial incentive(刺激) to fake the result: if the coin landed tails-up, the participants would receive money or a gift ticket, while if the coin landed heads-up, they would get nothing. Because they were on the phone, they knew there was no risk of getting caught if they lied.
And yet people told the truth.Over hundreds of tosses, a coin will land tails-up roughly 50% of the time. In this study 0ver half the people asked (55.6%) said that the coin landed heads-up, which meant they would receive nothing.
Previous studies had found that people were more dishonest. In those laboratory studies, 75% of people reported a winning coin and claimed a reward. So the research team thinks it's being in our own homes which makes us play fair, although it's not yet clear why.
In fact both types of study show people are surprisingly reliable. Even in the laboratory, 25% of people turned down a reward by telling the truth. The researchers say this is because honesty is highly valued in human society. We care about our reputation and our sense of ourselves as respectable people. So lying has a psychological cost and it seems this cost is more important than the financial benefits of lying.
12.When do people lie according to traditional economics?
A.When they are at home B.When it’s to their advantage .
C.When they would receive nothing D.When it comes to financial benefits.
13.Which of the following is TRUE according to the research?
A.There was no risk of getting caught lying if people were on the phone.
B.The participant would receive nothing if he said the coin landed tails-up.
C.The studies could help to correct the mistakes of the participants
D. people would play fair and behave acceptably if invited to the laboratory.
14.Under what circumstance were the participants more dishonest?
A.On the phone B. On the street
C.In their homes D. In those laboratory studies
15. Researchers have done an experiment in order to ____ .
A.find out the rates of tossing a coin . B.prove the finacial benefits of lying.
D.find out the reason why people play fair. D.advocate honesty is highly valued in society.

On a sunny day, three teenagers were walking along a city street planning a robbery. Their names were Harry, Tom, and Jack. They were on their way to a bar. But suddenly, Tom saw a bank with fake security cameras. Harry thought it was a good bank to rob, so they caught a bus back home and thought of a plan.
Harry wrote a note to hold up to the bank employee: “Give me all the money or I will kill you. I’ve got a gun and I’m not afraid to use it.”
Tom got some fake guns, and Jack took his mother’s car keys so they could have a getaway car.
The next day, Harry, Tom, and Jack set off for the bank. Harry gave the note to a clerk at the bank while Tom put one gun in each of his hands and pointed them at the clerk. Jack waited around the back of the bank with their getaway car.
The clerk said, “Fine,” and gave the teenagers the money. But suddenly, an alarm went off because the clerk pressed a red button under the desk. Many police officers came inside from every direction. Tom got his guns and pointed them at the police. Harry ran past a policeman and went around back where Jack was. Then Tom threw his guns up in the air, all the police officers looked up at the guns, and Tom ran around back just as Harry had.
When Harry and Tom got to Jack, they all jumped in the car and raced away.
Harry, Tom, and Jack spent half a year in Fiji with three million dollars. They bought ice cream sundaes and surfboards and lived happily.
