Period 3 Developing ideas

本单元的主题语境是“人与社会”——旅行。

本篇课文用电子邮件的方式展示了Eva和家人的一次穿越北美大陆之旅；读写部分的语篇是Alice在云南旅行时寄给Emma的一张明信片，表达了自己云南之旅的感受。

1. Guide students to get information through fast reading and match it with the picture information, understand the content of the article, and be able to simply retell the travel experience of Eva and her family;

2. Guide students to find out the cultural information in the text, perceive the cultural differences between China and Canada, and preliminarily form cross-cultural consciousness;

3. Thinking quality objective: extract relevant information about the travel notes in the text, and have my own thoughts on the significance of the trip.

Key points:

Guide the students to understand the content of the text, simply retell the travel experience of Eva and her family, understand and master expressions related to travel, and be able to describe their own travel experience.

Difficult points:

Ask the students to write a postcard based on an essay.

1. Read Coast to Coast in advance to learn about Eva and her family's travel experience across the north American continent;

2. Read a postcard sent to Emma by Alice during her trip to Yunnan in advance, and know how she felt during her trip to Yunnan;

3. Understand the meaning of new words in this part based on the context.

Step 1 Warming up

Activity 1

1.T introduces Canada to Ss.

2.Then ask students to finish Activity 1 and check their knowledge about Canada.

3.Ss share their answers with class

Step 2 Reading

Activity 2 (Scanning)

1. Ask students to scan the text and write the places on the map.

2. Ask students to share answers.

3. Help students learn how to scan a text.

Activity 3 (Careful-reading)

1. Explain the content in “Learning to learn” to students.

2. Ask students to underline the four sentences in the text, and think about what the underlined words

refer to.

1."It"refers to “My family and have managed to cross the North American continent, from western to eastern Canada. in two weeks”.

2. "It" refers to “our vehicle”.
3."That(day)"refers to "the eighth day of our trip”.
4. "That" refers to “Mums seat was empty”.

3. Ask students to share answers and give some explanations if necessary.

4. Help students summarize the usage of pronouns.

Step 3 Think and share

1. Ask students to read the text and think about the four questions.

2. Ask students to have a discussion in a group of 4 and note down the important points.

3. Choose some students to present their ideas.

1. Ask students to read the text again and complete the table.

2. Help students with their talks.

3. Ask students to share their talks in a group of 4.

4. Ask some students to give their talks in class.
5. Step 5 Writing

Activity 5

1. Ask students to read the postcard and pay attention to the format.

2. Ask students to answer the questions.

3. Ask students to retell the content of the postcard and illustrate the format of it.

Activity 6-7

1. Ask students to read the message and underline the questions Sam has asked in this message.

2. Explain the usage of the expressions in the box.

3. Ask students to write a postcard to Sam.

4. Ask students to exchange postcards and correct any mistakes for each other.

5. Ask students to turn in their postcards.

Step 6 Homework

1)        Read the passages on page 57 and 59 again,understand these passages better.

2)        Complete the exercises of the guide plan.

3)        Understand the content of the text, simply retell the travel experience of Eva and her family, understand and master expressions related to the trip, and be able to describe one's own travel experience.
