Step 1: Lead students t have a revisin f “the -ing frm and past participle used as the adverbial”.
(1)Read the fllwing sentences and identify the functin f the -ing frm.

What is the functin f saying and thinking?

What’s the lgic subject f the -ing frm?
What’s the relatinship between the -ing frm and its lgic subject? Active r passive?

What abut the first ne?
Gd! The lgic subject is “I”, and it’s an “active” relatinship. Here “saying” means “by saying, that is, by saying I’m cld, hungry r tired?”. S this is an adverbial f manner.
Her brther cmplained, thinking f the high tuitin fees.
Yes. Her brther is the lgic subject and there is an active relatinship between her brther and thinking. Can we change “thinking” int a clause?
--Yes. Her brther cmplained, when he thught f the high tuitin fees. S “thinking” is an adverbial.

What is the functin f given and written?
--Yes, adverbial.
--Then what abut the lgic subject and the relatinship between the past participle and its lgic subject ?
--Yu’re right.
In the first sentence, “the by” is the lgic subject, and there is passive relatinship between “given” and “the by”; “given” means “If he was given...” (s this is an adverbial f cnditin.)
The secnd sentence:Written in a hurry, the article was nt s gd.
“The article” is the lgic subject. Als, passive relatinship. Obviusly “written in a hurry” can be replaced by “Because it was written in a hurry,” s this is an adverbial f reasn.
(2) Make a summary abut “the -ing frm and past participle used as the adverbial”.
【总结】 动词-ing作状语时,它所表示的动作与句子主语之间构成逻辑上的_主动 关系;过去分词作状语时,它所表示的动作与句子主语之间构成逻辑上的 被动 关系;动词-ing和过去分词作状语时,根据其作用和意义很多时候可以改写成一个 状语从句 。

What abut the lgic subject and its relatinship with “playing”?

Sentence number 2.

-- The lgic subject f the past participle “beaten” is “the windws”. We knw “The windws were being beaten by the heavy rain drps.” Therefre, this is a passive relatinship.
(2) Make a summary abut “the -ing frm and past participle used as the bject cmplement”.
【总结】动词-ing作宾补(即宾语补足语)时,句子的宾语和宾补在逻辑上是 主动 关系;过去分词作宾补时,作宾补的过去分词与宾语在逻辑上是 被动 关系,即宾语是过去分词动作的对象。

Number 4: “many peple” is the lgic subject, and there is a passive relatinship between them. Then the crrect wrd is “asked”. It is an adverbial.
Number 5: There are tw -ing frms. Let’s lk at them ne by ne. “The wman” is the lgic subject f “talking”, and there is an active relatinship between them. “talking” is an bject cmplement, and it is the crrect wrd.
“thinking” is the secnd crrect, because its lgic subject is Jhn, and there is an active relatinship between them; “thinking” is an adverbial.
Number 6: “the manager” is the lgic subject, passive relatinship, “Impressed” is used as an adverbial.
Cmplete the passage with the crrect frms f the wrds belw. Then answer the questin: What is the authr’s attitude tward the dctr?
