Why dn't yu tell me what's up?Dawei: Well, I tk part in a natinal English speaking cmpetitin in Beijing, and I finished in last place.Jack: Oh, really? I'm srry t hear that. I'm sure yu did yur best, thugh.Dawei: I did, but it wasn't gd enugh. The ther kids were just better than me.Jack: But yu must have been very gd t get int the cmpetitin. Yu shuld be prud f yurself.
    Dawei: Well, there was a cmpetitin at schl first that was held t see wh wuld g int the natinal cmpetitin. I wn that, : There yu g! Yu have n reasn t be sad. Yu're the best English speaker at schl.Dawei: That's the prblem. I dn't think I am. I think Liu Jing is better than me, and she shuld have gne t Beijing instead f me.Jack: Wh's Liu Jing?Dawei: She's a girl in my class. When we did the schl cmpetitin, we were the tp tw students. The final schl cmpetitin was between me and her -the winner wuld g t Beijing.Jack: OK, but yu wn, fair and square. Why are yu s upset?
    Dawei: I think I was just lucky. Liu Jing's much better at English than I am. If she had gne t the natinal cmpetitin, she wuld have wn. Our schl wuld have becme well knwn, and everyne wuld have been happy. Instead, I went t Beijing and lst.Jack: Oh, Dawei, yu can't think like that! Wh knws what wuld have happened? I knw this is hard fr yu, but yu shuld cheer up. I mean, did yu have a gd time in Beijing?Dawei: Yes, I suppse I did. It's a really exciting city, and I met sme fantastic : There yu g! Yu had a gd time. And I'm sure yur parents are prud f yu!Dawei: They are, yes. It was great experience, but I just wish I had wn.
    Jack:[laughs]Yu can't win everything, Dawei! Yu're the best in the schl, and that means a lt. Perhaps ne day, if yu study hard, yu can be the best in the cuntry!Dwei: Yes, I hadn't thught f that. There will be anther cmpetitin in March. Perhaps I culd try again then.Jack: That's the spirit! I knw an English saying:”If at first yu dn't succeed, try, try again.”Dawei: Yes, that's gd advice. Thanks, Jack. Yu've really cheered me up. I feel a lt better nw.Jack: N prblem. And why dn't yu talk t Liu Jing? Yu can practise tgether.Dawei: Yes, I'll d that. Thank yu s much!
