Humans are very social creatures. In addition to verbal communication, we also use our bodies to help us better express our thoughts and feelings. This non-verbal communication is known as body language.
Body language includes things like facial expressions, eye contact and posture. It actually developed as a form of communication before humans could speak or write. We can tell a lot about what a person is thinking or feeling just by looking at them.
In fact, body language is so common that you may not even realize that you are communicating many messages to others every day without even using words. For example, you might move your head from side to side to express the word “no” instead of actually saying the word. Or, you might give a “thumbs (母指) up” to show that you like or agree with something.
But now that we are spending more time online, we may not have as many in-person interactions as before. Because of this, our means of non-verbal communication has changed, but is still an important way to express our thoughts.
Our “digital body language” is becoming increasingly important as we change how we communicate. Instead of using voice messages, we can video chat with our friends to show them our smiling face. Another way to express our emotions digitally is through emojis When we are communicating online, we are only revealing the content and leaving out tones and facial expressions. That’s when emojis can help in communication.
Whether using video chat to show our expression or sending an emoji, don’t forget the importance of digital body language and non-verbal communication.
4. What does the author mean by saying “Humans are very social creatures”?
A. Humans like living in groups.
B. Humans need to communicate.
C. Humans depend on each other.
D. Humans differ from other beings.
5. Why are the two examples mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A. To explain how to express “no”.
B. To prove how much one likes something.
C. To demonstrate how to communicate messages.
D. To show how much we underestimate body language.
6. What makes digital body language more and more important?
A. The way of communication. B. The voice messages we use.
C. The time we spend online. D. The invention of emojis.
7. How can emojis help in communication?
A. By revealing the content.
B. By helping us video chat.
C. By expressing our emotions.
D. By leaving out facial expressions.
C
What people say is only one aspect of good communication. Good listening skills and body language are also important for us to effectively communicate with others. Effective communication involves more than talking to a person. How things are said, words are chosen and tones are adopted are all aspects of good communication.
Body language, a common form of non-verbal communication, can support what a speaker is saying. Studies have shown that of the information that is received from other people, only 10% is from what they say and 40% is from the tone and speed of their voice. The other 50% is obtained from their body language. Reading body language is part of developing social skills.
Some professionals, such as lawyers, governmental security officers and doctors on mental problems, learn to read every type of body language of others to help in their jobs. They look for specific signs, while the average person reads some body language subconsciously Body language can involve one aspect such as the eyes, or the use of different body parts. Where the body is positioned in relation to another person or at a table is another piece in communicating what the person is feeling. Troubles may arise when body language is misunderstood.
Good listening skills clear the way to a clear message while bad listening skills create barriers which can confuse or stop the message. Good listeners can use body language by nodding occasionally to show interest and understanding, make eye contact with the speaker, repeat some of the words and feelings, and summarize what they have heard. All these can avoid communication troubles.
Poor listeners rarely communicate effectively. Barriers they commonly use may include: interruptions, unsuitable humor, judgments, criticisms, and unrelated questions. People who are attempting to communicate with a person who continually throws out barriers will often stop talking and they even get angry as they feel misunderstood and frustrated. Healthy-minded people are able to communicate with others effectively by avoiding these barriers. They are able to let their partners know what they want regularly and clearly.
8. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. Speakers usually pay little attention to what they said and what words and tones they use.
B. Good communication means talking to a person effectively with right tones and speed.
C. Body language and listening skills are highly involved in successful communication.
D. The manner of communication is determined by the listener rather than the speaker.
9. According to the studies, body language _____________.
A. makes up 40% of the information received from communication
B. sometimes leads people to misunderstand what others have said
C. can remind the listeners of what the speakers are actually expressing
D. can only be correctly read by people with excellent social skills
10. Which of the following reactions of a listener may create difficulties in communication?
A. Making a summary of what he has heard.
B. Repeating the speaker’s words and ideas.
C. Showing his feeling to the speaker.
D. Bringing in an unrelated topic.
11. What’s the author’s purpose of writing this text?
A. To emphasize that communication involves more than talking.
B. To introduce different types of non-verbal communication.
C. To suggest ways to effectively communicate with others.
D. To discuss the different effects of good and poor listening skills.

In an industrial area close to Egypt’s northern coast, colored lights and nine huge shining artworks made of factory waste materials by seven recycling artists brightened the night.
The artworks, mostly made of wastes of iron, plastic and wood, are on display at the first edition of the Alamein Art Festival. The festival being held at an industrial park owned by Industrial Development Group (IDG) in the Mediterranean resort city of New Alamein was organized by Art D’Egypte, an Egyptian platform for art and heritage.
“The one-month festival, which began on Thursday, seeks to promote the concept of environmental sustainability (持续性) through art,” said Nadine Abdel-Ghaffar, founder of Art D’Egypte and chief organizer of the festival. “Through their eco-friendly art installations (装置), Egyptian contemporary artists appeal to people to be aware of protecting the environment and the climate.”
One of the artworks on display features two large leaves standing side by side inside two opposing metal frames, looking like two pages of an open book. “It sends a message to factories that the materials they regard as wastes can be used for good purposes by artists in creating artworks, which can make a place more beautiful,” said experienced Egyptian sculptor Omar Tossoun and explained how he created his sculpture A Leaf.
In the center of the open-air exhibition area, visitors’ attention is drawn to a colorful 6-meter-tall shining object that looks like a jellyfish. It took two months for Marwa Magdy to finish the artwork called Jellyfish, which took half a ton of wasted iron.
Visitors have been impressed by the concept of recycling waste materials into artworks. “If you look around, the artists have really done very nice works. It is such a brilliant idea to use something that otherwise would be discarded and make it into a beautiful piece of art,” said Yehia Hamad, one of the visitors.
12. What can we know about the Alamein Art Festival?
A. It lasts about two months.
B. It isn’t popular with visitors.
C. Its artworks were created by 9 artists.
D. Its artworks were made of factory waste materials.
13. Who organized the festival?
A. Nadine Abdel-Ghaffar. B. Omar Tossoun.
C. Marwa Magdy. D. Yehia Hamad.
14. What does the underlined word “discarded” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Recycled. B. Thrown away. C. Bought. D. Fixed up.
15. What’s the best title of the text?
A. Omar Tossoun: An Experienced Artist
B. Alamein Art Festival: An Important Festival
C. Recycling Artists Turn Factory Waste into Artworks
D. Huge Shining Artworks Attract World’s Attention

根据第三段第二句“However, this course will enable you to enrich your English vocabulary (然而,这一课程能帮你丰富英语词汇量)”可知,大家选择这一课程的目的可能是为了拓展词汇。故选B。
故选A。
根据第三段“For example, you ... agree with something.
题句“In fact, body language is ... without even using words (事实上,肢体语言是如此普遍,
根据倒数第二段第一句“Our ‘digital body language’ is becoming increasingly important as we change how we communicate. 故选A。
根据倒数第二段“When we are communicating online, we are only revealing the content and leaving out tones and facial expressions. That’s when emojis can help in communication.
根据第一段中“Good listening skills and body language are also important for us to effectively communicate with others.
根据第二段中“The other 50% is obtained from their body language.
Barriers they commonly use may include: interruptions, inappropriate humor, judgments, criticisms, and unrelated questions.”
通读全文,结合第—段中“What people say is only one aspect of good communication. 及“Effective communication involves more than talking to a person. 故选A。
根据题目关键词Alamein Art Festival定位在第二段,第二段谈到的artworks(艺术品)在第一自然段也提到了,根据第一段“In an industrial area close to Egypt’s northern coast, colored lights and nine huge shining artworks made of factory waste materials by seven recycling artists brightened the night.
根据第三段中“‘The one-month festival, which began on Thursday, seeks to promote the concept of environmental sustainability through art,’ said Nadine Abdel-Ghaffar, founder of Art D’Egypte and chief organizer of the festival. 故选A。
根据划线所在句“It is such a brilliant idea to use something that otherwise would be discarded and make it into a beautiful piece of art (把原本会被丢弃的东西变成一件美丽的艺术品,这真是一个绝妙的主意)”可知,otherwise(否则)表达转折意思,前面的词语use something(使用一些东西)跟后面的应该是相反的,那么就是不用的、丢弃的。
1. G 根据下文“Show respect. 、“Be enthusiastic. 和“Try to avoid the bad days.
3. D 根据上文“Be enthusiastic. 以及下文“Don’t be afraid to show that you are interested in someone.
根据下文“Body language is as important as your words to first impressions. Make sure you posture is good, make strong eye contact and try to express your interest in others.
5. B 根据上文“Try to avoid the bad days. If something unfortunate happens, you don’t have to follow a scheduled meeting on the day. 和下文“Let them know you don’t want unfavorable things to affect them. It’ll show your ability to communicate effectively.

故选A。

3. on/upon 考查介词。rely on/upon是固定搭配,意为“依赖”,故填on/upon。
sb. be+形容词+to do意为“某人做……是……的”,故填to find。
Dear Tom,
I’m glad to know that you will travel to China. Firstly, I’d like to extend my warmest welcome to you. With regard to the problems you mentioned in the last e-mail, I’m writing to offer you some information about body language in China.
Body language varies from culture to culture. For instance, when it comes to talking to the elderly in China, it is typical of us to look down to avoid eye contact as a sign of showing respect, while this may mean lacking self-confidence in Britain. On the other hand, some gestures have the same meaning. We favor shaking hands, smiling or nodding the head to greet someone, just as you do in Britain.
Hopefully, my information can come in handy for you. Wish you a good a journey.
Yours,
Li Hua
