    B
From the earliest times, man has been interested in art. People have often worked together to collect and save the world’s art treasures.
Fine art treasures from many countries are kept in an art museum called the Louvre in Paris, France. The works of art have been collected by the people of France over many centuries.
The Louvre has not always been a museum. The first building was a fort(炮台). In 1190, it was the king’s castle with high walls and a round tower. It had a moat to prevent his enemies from walking in. Over the years, the number of buildings around the castle grew. By 1350, the castle was no longer needed as a fort. The Louvre became a palace home for French kings and queens. During times of peace, new treasures were brought in. During days of war, many treasures were stolen, and the buildings were damaged.
When Francis Ⅰ became King of France in 1515, he brought in artists from many countries. One of the artists was Leonardo da Vinci from Italy. Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa is the best known painting in the museum today.
In 1793, the Louvre became a public museum, just as it is now. It is a place where art treasures have been saved for everyone to enjoy.
    24. What’s the text mainly about?
    A. An art museum called the Louvre.
    B. An Italian artist named Leonardo da Vinci.
    C. A king of France named Francis Ⅰ.
    D. The best known painting in the Louvre.
    答案:A
    25. Why is it good for great art to be kept in public museums?
    A. It helps people remember who the King of France is.
    B. It keeps people out of the palaces.
    C. It gives everyone a chance to enjoy good art.
    D. It helps people to know who the greatest artist is.
根据文章最后一段内容“In 1793, the Louvre became a public museum, just as it is now. It is a place where art treasures have been saved for everyone to enjoy.”
    26. What can we know from the text?
    A. It is not possible for treasures to be stolen.
    B. Old forts always make the best museums.
    C. Great art should be shared with all the people.
    D. King Francis Ⅰ of France brought in artists from an old fort.
根据第三段中的“During days of war, many treasures were stolen ...”可知A项表述错误;并不是所有的炮台都能成为最好的博物馆,B项以偏概全,排除B项;根据第四段中的“When Francis Ⅰ became King of France in 1515, he brought in artists from many countries.”
    27. What does the underlined word “moat” probably mean?
    A. A high tower built in former times where soldiers watched out for enemies.
    B. A long and deep ditch(沟) dug round a castle and usually filled with water.
    C. A cart pulled by horses on which soldiers fought.
    D. A long and high wall around a castle.
根据moat所在句中的“... to prevent his enemies from walking in.”
    C
Mary Anning was an English fossil(化石) collector, dealer and paleontologist(古生物学家). Her fossil hunting helped change the way people thought about the world.
Mary was born into a poor family in England on May 21, 1799. She lived in the seaside town of Lyme Regis, in Dorset. The family had nine children. Only Mary and her brother Joseph grew up. Mary’s father took his children along the beach. They picked up shells and stones to sell to visitors. Mary did not go to school much. Her family was too poor. And schools did not teach children about fossils. Mary could read and write. She taught herself. She learned about rocks and how bodies were made.
In 1811 when Mary and Joseph were fossil hunting, Joseph saw a bone sticking out of the rock. Mary had a hammer to chip away at the rock. Very carefully she uncovered it. She found the first complete fossil of the ichthyosaur(鱼龙).
Since then, Mary became crazy about fossil hunting. She liked to hunt on the beach after a storm. The wind, rain and waves made the rocks crumble. It was easy to spot fossils. Most days Mary went fossil hunting with her dog, Tray.
Rich friends helped Mary by selling fossils for her. They sent her money. Scientists wrote letters and came to see her. One good friend was William Buckland, a professor at Oxford University. Mary also opened a shop to sell fossils, stones and shells. She chatted with visitors.
Mary Anning died in 1847. How evolution(进化) works was explained by Charles Darwin not long after Mary died. Her fossils had helped scientists understand how things began.
    28. Why did Mary’s father take his children along the beach?
    A. To enjoy life.
    B. To make a living.
    C. To look for fossils.
    D. To teach them about fossils.
根据第二段中的“Mary’s father took his children along the beach. They picked up shells and stones to sell to visitors.”
    29. What can we learn about Mary?
    A. Her father was a paleontologist.
    B. Her father educated her at home.
    C. She had nine brothers and sisters in all.
    D. She might be popular at that time.
文中并未提到Mary的父亲是一位古生物学家,故A项排除;根据第二段中的“Mary could read and write. She taught herself.” Only Mary and her brother Joseph grew up.”
    30. Who was the first to catch sight of the rock containing the first complete ichthyosaur fossil?
    A. Charles Darwin. B. Mary’s dog.
    C. Joseph. D. Mary.
Joseph saw a bone sticking out of the rock.”
    31. What can we infer from the text?
    A. Mary finally explained the theory about evolution.
    B. Unfortunately, Mary passed away in her fifties.
    C. Darwin once worked at Oxford University as a paleontologist.
    D. It was Mary’s fossil hunting that contributed to the way people thought about the world.
根据“How evolution works was explained by Charles Darwin not long after Mary died.”
    D
Over the years, hundreds, if not thousands, of priceless cultural and historical artifacts(历史文物) have been stolen. They usually end up in the hands of greedy collectors or museums. Though most of these stolen artifacts remain lost, many have been recovered and returned to their rightful homes.
Christopher Columbus is considered the most famous explorer in history. In 1493, he wrote an eight-page letter to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, who supported his historic voyage across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492. The letter, which was written in Latin, told Columbus’ first impression of Cuba and Hispaniola.
The historic letter was stolen from a library in Florence, Italy, in 1950. There was an excellent copy where the original letter was placed, so the staff didn’t notice that the real document was stolen and none of the public knew that. The priceless artifact appeared again in 1990 when it was bought by a collector in Switzerland. In 1992, it was sold in New York for $400,000. In 2004, it landed in the US Library of Congress. It was only in 2016 that the 500-year-old document was returned to Italy.
In 2012, several figurines(小雕像) were caught at the John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City. The priceless artifacts were displayed in the Nigerian National Museum, but they mysteriously disappeared later.
The 2,000-year-old figurines were created by the Nok people, an ancient culture that lived in Nigeria more than 2,000 years ago. What a surprise it is to find them again! “One feature of the recovered figurines is that each one has a distinctive(与众不同的) face.” Habib Baba Habu, who served as Nigeria’s consul general(总领事) during the time of the recovery, explained that this was typical of Nok sculpture.According to him, Nok artists used the figurines to describe their riding horses or donkeys or using farming tools.
    32. Who have got many stolen artifacts over the years?
    A. Greedy thieves. B. Museum directors.
    C. Library staff. D. Artifacts collectors.

    A. It was replaced by a copy.
    B. It was put at a hidden place.
    C. The staff were busy with other things.
    D. The staff hid the facts from the public.
根据第三段中的“There was an excellent copy where the original letter was placed,so the staff didn’t notice that the real document was stolen and none of the public knew that.” 故选A项。
    答案:A
    35. What can we know about Nok people?
    A. They helped set up the country Nigeria.
    B. They stole some priceless artifacts.
    C. They lived in Nigeria a thousand years ago.
    D. They got inspiration for figurines from their daily life.

    Foreign Students Spent the Double
    Ninth Festival with the Elderly
On the Double Ninth Festival, six foreign students who are studying in our school visited the nursing home.
They set out for the nursing home by bus at 8:30 am and arrived an hour later. Upon arrival, they began to help the elderly clean their rooms. Then, they spent some fun time singing, dancing and playing games together. What they did made the elderly happy and warm.
They all regarded it as an unforgettable experience, through which they not only knew more about the festival but also realised the elderly needed companion and happiness.
There was something in the elderly woman’s grace that caught my eye. Although slow and unsure of her steps, the woman moved with deliberation (从容), and there was no hesitation (犹豫) in her gestures.
It was a few years ago, and I had taken a part-time holiday-season job in a video store at the local shopping mall. From inside the store, I could see the people outside rushing by.
The elderly woman entered the store, along with her daughter, who was displaying a serious case of impatience, rolling her eyes, sighing and checking her watch every few seconds. I guessed if she had possessed a rope, she would have fastened it to her mother to drag her along to keep step with the rush of other shoppers.
The elderly woman separated from her daughter and began to seek through the DVDs on the nearest shelf. After the slightest hesitation, I walked over and asked if I could help her find something. The woman smiled up at me and showed me a title written on an old piece of paper.
Rather than rush off to locate the DVD for the woman, I asked her to walk with me so I could show her where she could find it. Looking back, I thought I wanted to enjoy her company for a moment. Something about her deliberate movements reminded me of my own mother, who’d passed away the previous Christmas. I missed my mum and still felt regretful about the moments when I’d used my impatience to make her life unhappy.
As we walked along the back of the store, I introduced its floor plan: old television shows, action movies, cartoons, science fiction. The woman seemed glad of the unrushed company and casual conversation.
We found the DVD and she thanked me, saying that it was the one she’d enjoyed when she was her daughter’s age. Unwillingly, I accompanied her to the cash register, realizing I had to return the elderly woman to her daughter, who was still tapping her foot at the front of the store.

As the elderly woman was waiting in the queue at the cash register, I walked to her daughter. “Mind some advice?” I asked. She rolled her eyes and said,“Of course not.” But clearly there was annoyance in her reply. I smiled to show her I wasn’t criticizing. “Cherish her and cherish every single moment you can stay with her,” I said to her surprise. And then I answered her curious expression by saying, “When she’s gone,it’s these little moments that will come back to you. Moments like this.” Having finished saying this, I noticed the eldely woman moving with her deliberation back to her daughter.
Together they made their way toward the store’s exit. They stood there for a moment, side by side, watching the rush of the holiday current and then looking at each other. Slowly, the daughter placed her arm with apparently unaccustomed affection around her mother’s shoulders and gently guided her back into the crowd. Tears filled my eyes when I watched them disappearing in the crowd.
