There are many bridges on the Thames in London; the following are among the most famous ones.
    Tower Bridge
Tower Bridge has stood over the Thames in London since 1894 and is one of the finest, most recognisable bridges in the world. It is the bridge in London you may see in movies and on advertising writing for London. Tower Bridge is the only Thames bridge that can be raised. It used to be raised about 50 times a day, but nowadays it is only raised 4 to 5 times a week.
    London Bridge
The construction of the first stone London Bridge started in 1176 and finished years later. Houses and shops were once built on the bridge, which made the road so narrow that it was often jammed with people, horses and carts. A “keep left” rule was made in 1733 to keep the traffic moving. This became the rule of the road in Britain. In 1757 the old bridge was pulled down and a new one was built in 1831. Interestingly, that one was pulled down again in 1967 but rebuilt in Lake Havasu City, the USA, as a tourist attraction. The present London Bridge was opened in 1973.
    Millennium Bridge
Millennium Bridge is a bridge for walkers. Almost immediately after its opening, the bridge had to be shut because of the dangerous waving caused by too many visitors. It has now been reopened. The bridge is about 320 metres, costs 16 million pounds to build and only takes walkers.
    Westminster Bridge
Westminster Bridge is a road and foot traffic bridge over the Thames between Westminster and Lambeth. The present bridge, opened in 1862, is the second on the site and took the place of an earlier bridge opened in 1750. The British romantic poet, William Wordsworth, wrote a famous poem composed upon Westminster Bridge in the autumn of 1802.

Music is magic! Music speaks louder than words and it is a “language” that the whole world can understand. A piece of music can produce a response in the heart and mind. Like feeling an electrical current or receiving a personal radio signal, music has a spiritual effect on a person. Different kinds of music influence people in different ways.
I have listened to music all my life. When I was twelve years old, the Beatles came to America and my whole world opened up. Maybe young people today cannot understand the influence of the Beatles when they exploded across America. Their influence changed the way we dressed, looked, acted and spoke ... even our culture. The Beatles arrived in America from the UK at a special time in American politics. And the freshness and lively spirit of the Beatles was exactly what the country needed to refresh itself.
Music links the heart of the hearer with that of the composer. This means that it mixes the spirit of the composer with your spirit when you listen to it. And the music can take your spirit out of your body and transport you into another world. Music has a great way of touching people. Music can make you laugh, cry or shout. It’s also a great source of inspiration.
Try this one day and notice what happens: make yourself a cup of tea, sit on your sofa and play one of your favourite songs. Close your eyes, and soon you’ll find yourself creating vivid mental images—matching the music that you are listening to.
    28. Why does music have magical power?
    A. It is a kind of language.
    B. It can influence a person’s spirit.
    C. It receives a personal radio signal.
    D. It can be played much louder than words.
根据第一段提到的“A piece of music can produce a response in the heart and mind. Like feeling an electrical current or receiving a personal radio signal, music has a spiritual effect on a person. Different kinds of music influence people in different ways.”

    D. They appeared at a special time in American politics.

Sometime in the early 1960s, a significant thing happened in Sydney, Australia. The city discovered its harbour. Then, one after another, Sydney discovered lots of things that were just sort of there—broad parks, superb beaches, and a culturally diverse population. But it is the harbour that makes the city.
Andrew Reynolds, a cheerful fellow in his early 30s, pilots Sydney ferryboats for a living. I spent the whole morning shuttling back and forth across the harbour. After our third run Andrew shut down the engine, and we went our separate ways—he for a lunch break, I to explore the city.
“I’ll miss these old boats,” he said as we parted.
“How do you mean?” I asked.
“Oh, they’re replacing them with catamarans. Catamarans are faster, but they’re not so elegant, and they’re not fun to pilot. But that’s progress, I guess.”
Everywhere in Sydney these days, change and progress are the watchwords(口号), and traditions are increasingly rare. Shirley Fitzgerald, the city’s official historian, told me that in its rush to modernity in the 1970s, Sydney swept aside much of its past, including many of its finest buildings. “Sydney is confused about itself,” she said. “We can’t seem to make up our minds whether we want a modern city or a traditional one. It’s a conflict that we aren’t getting any better at resolving(解决).”
On the other hand, being young and old at the same time has its attractions. I considered this when I met a thoughtful young businessman named Anthony. “Many people say that we lack culture in this country,” he told me. “What people forget is that the Italians, when they came to Australia, brought 2,000 years of their culture, the Greeks some 3,000 years, and the Chinese more still. We’ve got a foundation built on ancient cultures but with a drive and dynamism of a young country. It’s a pretty hard combination to beat.”
He is right, but I can’t help wishing they would keep those old ferries.
    32. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
    A. Sydney’s striking architecture.
    B. The cultural diversity of Sydney.
    C. The key to Sydney’s development.
    D. Sydney’s tourist attractions in the 1960s.

Habits to Be a Highly Effective Student
Some students are able to get straight “A”s and at the same time serve as the president of three clubs. However, some students struggle to keep their GPA(Grade-Point Average) above a 3.0. 36. Although it’s true that everyone’s IQ is different, good study habits are very important. Here are several habits you should adopt to get good grades.
    37. If you haven’t had a planner, get one. Many people use their computers and smartphones to make a schedule. The problem with that approach is that they are major distractions. Instead, get an old-fashioned paper and pen planner.
Create a weekly schedule. 38. Include time that will be spent eating, sleeping and doing anything not related to schoolwork. That way you know exactly how much you can accomplish each day.
Take frequent, short breaks. Taking a break from studying for 15 minutes every hour will help keep you refreshed. 39. If you don’t take a break, you may find yourself daydreaming or even falling asleep. Take some time for some water, a snack or a quick chat with a friend.
Take care of yourself. During the final exam week, it is common for students to fall behind on sleep and meals. Make sure you get a good night’s sleep and have regular meals. Studying while hungry or sleepy is ineffective and will slow you down in the long run. Also try to make time for friends and family. 40.

    答案:were
    答案:on
该定语从句补充完整为“who mostly don’t make the time for you when you need them”。
    答案:mostly
    答案:when

    Dear Chris,
How are you doing? It has been a year since you came back to Ireland. I still remember the very day when we met at Sino-Ireland Cultural Festival two years ago. You shared so many interesting things about your country at that festival, through which I learned much about your food, culture and history. What’s far more important is that we became good friends then. Though I felt sorry that you left China last year, I am pleased that you’re leading a happy life now. I hope we can keep in touch often.
    Best wishes!
    Yours,
    Li Hua
A young man and a young girl fell in love. But the man came from a poor family. The girl’s parents weren’t too happy. So the young man decided not only to please the girl but to please her parents as well. In time, the parents saw that he was a good man and was worthy of their daughter’s hand.
But there was another problem. The man was a soldier. Soon, war broke out and he was being sent overseas for a year. The week before he left, the man went down on one knee and asked his lady love, “Will you marry me?” She wept happy tears, said yes, and they were engaged. They agreed that when he got back in one year, they would get married.
But tragedy struck. A few days after he left, the girl had a major vehicular accident. It was a head-on collision. When she woke up in the hospital, she saw her father and mother crying. Immediately, she knew that she must have been badly injured.
She later found out that she suffered brain injury. The part of her brain that controlled her face muscles was damaged. Her once lovely face was now disfigured.
She cried as she saw herself in the mirror. “Yesterday I was beautiful. Today, I’m a monster.” Her body was also covered with so many ugly wounds. Right there and then, she decided to release her fiancé(未婚夫) from their promise. She knew he wouldn’t want her anymore. She would forget about him and never see him again.
For one year, the soldier wrote many letters—but she wouldn’t answer. He phoned her many times, but she wouldn’t return his calls.
But after one year, the mother walked into her room and announced, “He’s back from the war.” The girl shouted, “No!Please don’t tell him about me. Don’t tell him I’m here!”
    注意:
    (1)续写词数应为150左右;
    (2)请按如下格式作答。
The mother said, “He’s getting married,” and handed her a wedding invitation. __________________________________________________
    _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
That was when the young man entered her room with a bouquet of flowers. ____________________________________________________
    _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The mother said,“He’s getting married,”and handed her a wedding invitation. That was a big shock to her. Her eyes were filled with tears immediately. She couldn’t help shaking so that she didn’t look at the wedding invitation. She felt her heart in great pain. Then, the girl asked her mother to leave her room and lost in thought. The young man who once was her fiancé would get married with the other girl. She really hated the accident which made her injured. How poor she was!Thinking of this, she burst into tears again.
That was when the young man entered her room with a bouquet of flowers. She was so shocked that she couldn’t believe it. The young man gently touched her face, saying, “Dear, I really miss you. Why don’t you return my calls? The war can’t stop me from keeping promise.Everything that needs for the wedding is ready. Now, young lady, would you like to marry me?” She cried again, but this time, she was filled with happiness. Finally she opened the wedding invitation. It was her name that was written in it. How lucky she was!
