      Hello, I’m Rachel Joyce. I’m so happy to be here today at the Claremont Library. I’ve travelled all the way from England, and ⑰it’s truly wonderful to visit the United States!       Many people believe that language belongs to human beings. However, cats have developed a language not for each other, but for the human beings who have them as pets.
      When communicating with each other, cats “talk” with a system of signals. Their tails, rather than any kind of “speech”, act as an important way to express themselves. They also touch each other to express their feelings. With other cats, they will use their voices only to express pain. Unbelievably, all of that changes when a human walks into the room. Cats use many different kinds of vocal(声音的)expressions when they communicate with a person. Since these vocal expressions are not used to communicate with other cats, it seems that cats have developed this “language” to communicate with their human owners.
      This fact is shown more clearly when researchers are watching rooms that have only one cat and those with several cats. And when there is only one cat in the room, it is usually very vocal, since the only creature around with whom the cat can communicate is its owner. Cats with other cats, though, are much quieter. If they want to have a conversation, they only need go to other cats and communicate in their natural way.
      Since cats have learned to meow( 喵喵叫) for the only purpose of communicating with human owners, their owners should take the time to learn what their different meows mean.       Many people believe that you lose the ability to learn new languages as you get older. Language experts, however, will tell you that you’re never too old to learn a new language. As you get older, it can be more difficult to learn a new language, though.
      Children and adults learn new languages in different ways. For children, language is their life.       There are around 6, 000 living languages in the world and at least half of these are in danger. In every part of the world, languages are disappearing. In fact, one scientist has said that languages are in more danger of extinction than birds or mammals. Professor Steve Sutherland of the University of East Anglia says that in the past 500 years 4. 5 percent of languages have died out—compared with 1. 3 percent of birds, and 1. 9 percent of mammals.

      The Ethnologue, a database of all the languages spoken in the world, states that 417 languages are spoken by so few people that they are in the final stages of becoming extinct. If very few people speak a language, it will probably die out.
      Languages may be lost through migration (迁移), as people move from small towns to city centers, or when environments are destroyed by the search for oil or wood. Natural disasters can also destroy populations, and along with them, their language. Governments also play a role in the extinction of languages. The need to establish “official languages”, for a country to educate its children and carry out its business, had a disastrous effect on many small languages.
      What is lost if a language is lost? Some people argue that languages die as the human race develops. Obviously there could be great benefits if everyone in the world spoke the same language—some industries already reflect this, with English essential for pilots and air traffic controllers. But there are more important things than convenience. As languages are lost, whole ways of life and knowledge may be lost along with them.
      To put it simply, language expresses something about identity, about our place in the world. Ani Rauhihi, a Maori teacher in New Zealand’s North Island, sums it up: “If you grow up speaking our language, you won ’t know who you are. ”

      Emily didn’t want to be rejected again, so she hesitated about it.       In today’s world where we have various translation apps that allow us to talk to almost anyone “in his own language”, why do we still need to make an effort to learn a foreign language ourselves?
