    D yu lve bacn (熏猪肉)? Wh desn't, right? Frm time t time, yu may have heard the phrase “bring hme the bacn”. Did yu ever wnder what that means?


    Actually, “bring hme the bacn” is a cmmn phrase used t mean “t earn mney”. If yu're “bringing hme the bacn”, yu're making mney t bring hme t yur family. S hw is the meat cnnected with making mney?


    One ppular stry hlds that the phrase appeared in the 1100s in a small twn f Great Dunmw in England. The church (教堂) in Great Dunmw wuld give a rasher f bacn as a reward t any man wh culd hnestly say that he had nt argued (争吵) with his wife fr a year. Others believe the phrase gt started in the 1500s at cuntry fairs. One f the mst ppular cmpetitins included catching a pig. The prize fr it was that yu gt t keep it.


    Since the 1600s, the wrd “bacn” has been used t mean ne's bdy. Because peple ften cnnect the bdy with ne's ability t wrk and earn mney, it's believed that bacn finally tk n that meaning, t. One way f earning mney with ne's bdy back then was the sprt f bxing.


    On September 3, 1906, bxer Je Gans fught against Oliver Nelsn fr the wrld lightweight champinship in Gldfield, Nevada. Accrding t the Ren Evening Gazette, Je received a telegram (电报) frm his mther befre the fight. It read: “Je, the eyes f the wrld are n yu. Everybdy says yu ught t win. Peter Jacksn will tell me the news and yu bring hme the bacn.” Je Gans did win the fight and the prize mney that went alng with the victry. He sent a telegram back t his mther, saying that he was “bringing hme the bacn”. Mrs Gans was prbably repeating a phrase she had heard befre, but hers was the first usage that experts can find. Befre lng, the phrase was being used cmmnly in bxing, and it als quickly mved t ther sprts.
