Step 1 Lead-in(1a)
The teacher shws sme f celebrities' phts and asks students t describe the persns in the phts.

One vide shws a scene f students participating in a music club:Students learn musical instruments,sing in chrus,and rehearse prgrammes in classrms r practise rms. The ther shws a scene f students attending a music festival:Students are watching perfrmances and interacting in a carnival-like atmsphere.

2.Ask students t listen t the cnversatins and cmplete 1b.
T:Here are tw cnversatins. Can yu tell where the cnversatins take place? Listen t the cnversatins and tick the crrect places.

Ask students t listen t the cnversatins again and cmplete the sentences.
T:Cheng Jie and Peter are ging t perfrm in the cming music festival. But there are sme prblems. Hw d they slve the prblems? Listen t the first cnversatin and fill in the blanks.

Step 3 Prnunciatin & Speaking(1~2)
1.The teacher shws puzzle cards (each with letters r letter cmbinatins written n them),shuffles the pieces,and distributes them t students. The teacher plays the audi f the prnunciatin /ə/.The students quickly find the puzzle pieces with letters r letter cmbinatins that make the same sund as the ne they hear (/ə/) and put the puzzle tgether.
T:Lk at these puzzle cards. Each card has sme letters r letter cmbinatins n it.I'll mix up these cards and give them ut t yu. Listen carefully! I'll play the sund /ə/.When yu hear it,quickly find the cards with letters r letter cmbinatins that make the same sund. Then,wrk tgether t put the puzzle back in ne piece!
2.Ask students t bserve the cmmnalities f these different letters and letter cmbinatins,and then intrduce the knwledge f phnetic symbl /ə/.
T:Great jb! Nw,take a gd lk at the cards yu've put tgether. What d these different letters and letter cmbinatins have in cmmn? Let's find ut! Yu see,when these letters r letter cmbinatins make this special sund,we use the phnetic symbl /ə/.
3.Ask students t read the tw sunds /ə/ (as in “abut”) and /ɜː/ (as in “bird”) and distinguish the differences between them.

3.Ask students t add ne mre wrd accrding t the prnunciatin in each grup.

2.Ask students t practise and imitate the tw cnversatins in pairs. Then,have several pairs t perfrm ne by ne and select the “Best Imitatin Grup”.
