I first encuntered the classics in university when I was pursuing a degree in English literature. But cmbining a lack f life experience with exams, deadlines and a desire fr gd grades, I didn’t get the chance t sit with them, take them apart and see hw they really wrk.
Sme 40 years later, I became an editr. A clleague suggested I read sme classics and break them dwn int simple parts. I was interested. We made a list and I chse t reread many bks I had nce lved. I was curius t see hw they wuld land decades later. Wuld they still matter? Culd my tech-brken attentin handle a lng nvel like Middlemarch?
Reading Middlemarch when yu’re 19 is very different frm reading it when yu’re 60. S much f Elit’s wrk n marriage, relatinships, and expectatins went unnticed by my yunger self. And s much f it is laugh-ut-lud funny. The attentin she pays t even secndary characters and the way she pairs peple tgether wh are surely t have intense interactins are masterful. I was s swept-away that I texted a friend wh had als read Middlemarch in university: “Yu have t read it again. Yu wn’t believe hw gd it is.” And hw incredibly relevant, even thugh it was published in 1871. Maybe life has changed since then, but human nature hasn’t.
That’s why rereading classics matters. These bks have std the test f time because their authrs understd smething abut humanity that still tuches us and makes us questin ur mtives and chices. In a practical, byte-sized wrld, reading them helps save what is in danger f being lst: the enjyment f mastery in language, f characters s alive we might imagine them walking int ur living rm and f the ability t stand in anther persn’s shes and feel what they feel.

Wh amng us hasn’t weighed up the value f attending an event that required a lng cmmute (通勤), r fund themselves in a bad md due t being stuck in traffic? But while it’s bvius that sme activities will bring us jy and thers nly frustratin, translating this understanding int data that can help guide plicy decisins has histrically prved difficult.
It’s what Dr. Christian Krekel and Dr. Gerge MacKerrn have been explring. They prpse a new methd fr estimating the Value f Time (VOT) and calculate (计算), fr the first time, VOTs fr a wide range f cmmn activities such as walking, cmmuting and scialising. Thrugh an app called Mappiness, they can ask peple abut their happiness randmly thrughut the day and recrd hw they are actually feeling in that mment while ding smething r being smewhere. With data frm ver 30,000 peple arund the UK, the researchers were able t identify hw peple felt when carrying ut 42 daily activities and calculate a mnetary (货币的) value fr each activity.
Interestingly, “waiting r queuing” was fund t have a strng and significant negative impact n happiness, ranking as the third least enjyable activity. The VOT shws that spending 60 minutes waiting is fund t be wrth £12.20 per hur; cmmuting £8.40 per hur; and waiting during cmmuting, a huge £17.20 per hur. These high csts suggest that respndents wuld be better ff spending their time ding smething else. Or, as Dr. Krekel says, “Smene wh is waiting fr 60 minutes wuld need t be paid £12.20 t achieve the same level f happiness if they were nt waiting.”
This new methd f calculating VOT allws researchers t measure the benefits f funding time-saving facilities, helping plicymakers t make infrmed decisins ver where best t spend mney. By shwing hw impactful waiting and cmmuting are n the ppulatin, the research makes a strng case fr funding prjects that wuld reduce the time peple spend ding these activities and prmte the wellbeing f all wh stand t benefit.

He further explained, “This narrw fcus ignres the emtinal reasns that truly drive peple t mve — whether it’s the jy f play, the warmth f human cnnectin, r the satisfactin f persnal achievement.”
Evidence frm 123 studies is in line with his perspective, shwing that messages highlighting immediate benefits — such as enjyment, increased energy, and scial interactin — prve mre effective than health warnings. A great example is the ppular game Pkémn GO: it made players walk thusands f extra steps every day. This shws clearly that fun and interest — nt fear f getting sick — are better at getting peple mving.
As we lk tward the next glbal health target in 2030, experts suggest it’s time t fundamentally rethink ur apprach. We must stp treating physical activity as a bitter pill and start presenting it as an invitatin t jy, human cnnectin, and persnal achievement. By speaking t the heart rather than just t health cncerns, we may finally inspire mre peple t embrace (欣然接受) active lifestyles.
