一、阅读理解
1. Foreign visitors to the UK might be disappointed when they learn that not everyone there speaks like Harry Potter and his friends. Usually, there’s an assumption by many non-Brits that everyone in Britain speaks with what’s known as a Received Pronunciation (RP,标准发音) accent, also called “the Queen’s English”. However, while many people do talk this way, most Britons speak in their own regional accents.
Scouse, Glaswegian and Black Country dialect—from Liverpool, Glasgow and the West Midlands—are just three of the countless non-RP accents that British people speak with. There are even differences in accents between towns or cities just 30 kilometers apart. What is even more disappointing is that not speaking in a RP accent may mean a British person is judged and even treated differently in their everyday life.
In a 2015 study by The University of South Wales, videos of people reading a passage in three different UK accents were shown to a second group of people. The group then rated how intelligent they thought the readers sounded. The lowest-rated accent was Brummie, native to people from Birmingham, a city whose accent is considered working class.
However, there is no need to be disappointed though you are not speaking in a RP accent. In fact, doing the opposite may even give you strength.
Kong Seong-jae, 25, is an internet celebrity from Seoul. After studying in the UK, he picked up several regional accents. He’s now famous for his online videos, where he shows off the various accents he’s learned. “British people usually get really excited when I use some of their local dialect words, and they become much friendlier. I think it makes a bit of bond between local people and foreigners to speak in their local accent.” he said.
So if you’re working on perfecting your British accent, try to speak like someone from Liverpool, Glasgow or Birmingham. You may not sound like Harry Potter, but you are likely to make more friends.
1.What can we infer from paragraph 1?

2.My mother has a dining table which sits right in the middle of her dining room. It was once buried beneath piles of papers——magazines, articles, copies of schedules for vacations she took back in the 1990s, and baby pictures of grand children who are now paying off their college loans.
My brother Ross and I recently flew to New York to visit my mother. “Mom,why don’t we go through all that stuff?” Ross said. “No. Don’t touch it!” my mother said. The next afternoon, when she couldn't find a bill she needed, Ross suggested it might be put somewhere in the dining room and that we find it together. “ Besides,” he said,“ all those papers are clearly stressing you out. ”However, my mother just said, “Are you boys hungry? ”And then she seemed to have lost herself in deep thought.
On our last night there, my mother walked up to us with a small pile of unopened mails, which she had collected at the western edge of the dining table, and said,“ Help me go through these. Sure,”I said. When we had succeeded in separating wheat from chaff (谷壳) , I asked,“ Would you want to deal with another little pile of papers? ”
My mother led the way, walking into the dining room the way an animal manager might be while entering a cage with tigers in it. Ross and 1 came in behind her and suddenly he reached for a pile of the papers on one side of the table. “No! ”my mother said sharply. “Let’s start at the other end. That’s where the older stuff is. ” Finally,we threw 95 percent of the stuff into paper shopping bags. Then I asked what she wanted us to do with them, and she surprised us all by saying, “Put them in the incinerator (垃圾焚化炉). ”
When I returned home, inspired by the visit to my mother, I sorted out my own accumulated (积累的) piles of papers, sold or gave away half of my possessions, and moved into a smaller house. It seems that my life has been cheaper and easier since then. And it proves that a small change does make a big difference.

3. If you enjoy reading, the world in books will become a place which is not to be experienced in watching television only for entertainment. Studies have shown how those who read for pleasure achieve more in literacy (读写能力) and thinking abilities than those who don't. Actually, there is nothing else that will expand your language skills and make your imagination fly.
To begin with, language skills can be better learned through reading for pleasure than through watching TV for entertainment. At its best, television can be educational as well as entertaining, but nobody wishes to improve his literacy by simply sitting in front of a TV box. Therefore, only by reading can you enlarge your vocabulary. However, it must be made clear that the relation between literacy and reading is like comparing health to sport. One is something practical and the other is something you do because you enjoy it.
The books that help you most in imagination are those that make you think most. In this point, reading for pleasure, both paper-based and on-screen, is far more helpful than watching TV. For example, there is always a book which is opened with expectation and closed with profit: imagination. Unluckily, some people's love of books is lost influenced by television, which is considered as a decline in thinking abilities.
On the whole, watching TV is largely harmless as an entertainment and information tool, but there is no better way to improve your language skills and imagination than reading for pleasure. For those who would continue to enjoy reading, there is a paradise (天堂) not yet being lost. Having got an amount of language skills through wide reading, you might as well imagine that such a paradise would not be very unlike a kind of library.
1.What does the writer mainly talk about in Paragraph 1?
A.The advantage of reading books.
B.The way of improving language skills.
C.The pleasure in watching TV.
D.The advantage of our imagination.
2.What does the writer say about reading in the text?
A.People can get the latest information through it.
B.It offers more pleasure than watching TV.
C.It plays a bigger role in kids' growth than watching TV.
D.More language skills will be gained as people read more.
3.Which word can replace the underlined word "decline" in Paragraph 3?
A.Development. B.Decrease.
C.Destroy. D.Improvement.
4.What does the writer think of watching TV?
A.It's a waste of time and energy.
B.It's a paradise for those who like watching TV.
C.It's helpful in some aspects.
D.It's done only for entertainment.
4. On Tuesday, the Shenzhen team of Blue Sky Rescue, a domestic non-profit civil rescue team, confirmed that two of its members had died trying to rescue 24 tourists who had got into difficulties.
According to the official news, it was on Monday that the rescue team received a telephone call from 24 travelers, who were trapped in a river valley, with a storm on the way and one of the female travelers being badly injured.
The team responded immediately. However, when they helped the travelers, two team members got trapped by the rising river water. The next day, they were confirmed dead.
The two heroes who gave their own lives to save others are being mourned by all.
Who can rescue the rescuers? The question aroused a heated discussion among people. Most of them think we would rather such "heroic deeds" were not required. However, that depends on people being more sensible. In the past several years, there have been many cases in which travelers, ignoring the signs saying certain areas are dangerous and off-limits, still have kept on "exploring" unpaved and unmarked regions and ended up needing to be rescued. By doing so, they put not only their own lives at risk but also the lives of those who go to their aid.
In this case, although the travelers may have been in an authorized area, they ignored the warnings of an approaching typhoon. It was extremely reckless (鲁莽的) of them to travel into the wild on such a day, as the local weather forecast had warned people against the impending typhoon. Two rescuers have lost their lives because of the thoughtlessness of others.
Although the majority of travelers behave properly, some attempt challenging tasks that are obviously beyond their abilities.
The law has already made it clear that if a traveler or group gets into difficulties when entering unauthorized regions, they must bear the costs of the rescue operations. The regulations need strengthening to deter travelers from putting their own lives and the lives of others at risk.
1.What happened to a woman traveler?
A.She lost her way. B.She was trapped on the mountain.
C.She died in the storm. D.She was seriously hurt.
2.What is the writer's attitude towards some tourists?
A.Critical. B.Sympathetic. C.Understanding. D.Admiring.
3.What does the underlined word "deter" in the last paragraph mean?
A.Protect. B.Keep. C.Excuse. D.Separate.
4.What can be a suitable title for this passage?
A.The blue sky rescue B.Who can rescue the rescuers?
C.Who should bear the costs? D.A deadly typhoon

My mom only had one eye. I hated her. She was such an embarrassment. She cooked for students and teachers to support the family.
There was one day during elementary school when my mom came over to say hello to me. I was so embarrassed.
How could she do this to me? I ignored her, threw her a hateful look and ran away. The next day at school one of my classmates said, "Your mom only has one eye!"
I wanted to bury myself. I also wanted my mom to just disappear. I confronted(面对) her that day and said, "If you're only going to make me a laughing stock, why don't you just die?"
My mom did not respond. I didn't even stop to think for a second about what I had said, because I was full of anger. I took no notice of her feelings at all.
I wanted to be out of that house, and have nothing to do with her. So I studied really hard, and got a chance to go abroad for further education.
Then, I got married. I bought a house of my own. I had kids of my own. I was happy with my life, my kids and the comforts. Then one day, my mother came to visit me. She hadn't seen me in years and she didn't even meet her grandchildren.
When she stood by the door, my children laughed at her, and I shouted at her for coming over uninvited. I screamed at her, "How dare you come to my house and scare my children! GET OUT OF HERE! NOW!!!"
And to this, my mother quietly answered, "Oh, I'm so sorry. I may have got the wrong address." And she was soon out of sight.
One day, a letter regarding a school reunion(同学聚会) came to my house. So I lied to my wife that I was going on a business trip. After the reunion, I went to the old house just out of curiosity.
My neighbors said that she died. I did not shed (流出) a single tear. They handed me a letter that she had wanted me to have.

8.答案:
Dear Sir/Madame,
I'm Li Hua, a high school student from Beijing. Interested in the 2022 Winter Olympics, I'm writing to apply to be a volunteer in the games.
I feel I have the necessary qualifications and experience needed for the voluntary job. Above all, I'm a fluent English speaker so that I have no difficulty communicating with the visitors. Besides, keen on sports, I'm quite familiar with different events and the locations of the venues as a local. Equally importantly, I previously served as a volunteer several times, which is also an advantage over other candidates. As a warm-hearted and unselfish teenager, I do believe I can do the job well if I'm granted a chance.
Any favorable consideration of my application or a personal interview would be appreciated.
I'm looking forward to your early reply.
Yours
Li Hua

Paragraph 1:
My dearest son,
I think of you all the time and I'm sorry that I went to your house and scared your children. I had never thought my visit would bring so much unhappiness to you. However, I was really so happy when I heard you were coming for the reunion, I missed you day and night. But I may not be able to even get out of bed to see you. I'm terribly sorry that I was a constant embarrassment to you when you were growing up.
Paragraph 2:
You see, when you were very little, you got into a terrible accident, as a result of which you lost one of your precious eyes. As a mother, I couldn't stand watching you have to grow up with just one eye. It was too much for you—a young soul to endure such a cruel fact and a possible future full of challenges. So I gave you mine. I was so proud of my son who was seeing a whole new world in my place with that eye.
With all my love to you.
