    如but,however,in fact,actually等时,其后的内容往往是作者真正想要表达的观点。
    如therefore,thus,in short,conclude 等,其后的内容往往是文章的主题。
Some parents will buy any high-tech toy if they think it will help their child, but researchers said puzzles help children with math-related skills.
Psychologist Susan Levine,an expert on mathematics development in young children at the University of Chicago, found children who play with puzzles between ages 2 and 4 later develop better spatial skills.Puzzle play was found to be a significant predictor of cognition(认知)after controlling for differences in parents’ income, education and the amount of parent talk,Levine said.
The researchers analyzed video recordings of 53 child-parent pairs during everyday activities at home and found children who play with puzzles between 26 and 46 months of age have better spatial skills when assessed at 54 months of age.
“The children who played with puzzles performed better than those who did not,on tasks that assessed their ability to rotate(旋转)and translate shapes,”Levine said in a statement.
The parents were asked to interact with their children as they normally would, and about half of the children in the study played with puzzles at one time.Higher-income parents tended to have children play with puzzles more frequently, and both boys and girls who played with puzzles had better spatial skills. However, boys tended to play with more complex puzzles than girls, and the parents of boys provided more spatial language and were more active during puzzle play than the parents of girls.
The findings were published in the journal Developmental Science.
    27. What is the text mainly about?
    A. A mathematical method.
    B. A scientific study.
    C. A woman psychologist.
    D. A teaching program.

    1
NASA has a new job listing, and it's no joke. The US space agency is looking for a"joker" to join their journey to Mars.
A journey to Mars is no laughing matter. On average, the red planet is 140 million miles away. A trip there would take around eight months in a small spaceship. As it is difficult to communicate, astronauts will have to wait 20 minutes for a reply when an emergency happens.
“When you're living with others in a confined space for a long time, such as on a mission to Mars, problems will happen,” said Jeffrey Johnson, a scientist at the University of Florida. This is probably why NASA wants an astronaut with a sense of humor. These people have the ability to pull everyone together.
In stressful situations, perhaps humor is a way to know we aren't alone. By laughing together, we share stress, Then we can focus on our jobs instead of just worrying.
There are other examples of team “jokers”. One example is the journey to the South Pole led by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, Adolf, a cook at Amundsen' s team, was "joker". He made people laugh through the whole difficult and dangerous journey, Amundsen later wrote that Adolf was the most valuable member of the team.
But if you're hoping that your favorite TV comedian will fly to Mars, that probably won't happen. “Being funny won't be enough to land somebody the job,” Johnson said. “They also need to be an excellent scientist and engineer.” Besides, they must be in top physical condition.
    1. Who might get the job offered by NASA?
    A. A good cook. B. A talented joker.
    C. A humorous engineer. D. A popular comedian.
    2. What does "a confined space" in Paragraph 3 mean?
    A. a small space B. an open space C. a secure space D. an empty space
    3. How does the author think humor can help astronauts?
    A. Reminding them of their family. B. Bringing them closer on a journey.
    C. Helping them know themselves better. D. Helping them fix professional problems.
    4. Why does the author mention the example of the cook?
    A. To show the importance of their food.
    B. To prove the role of humor in difficult situations.
    C. To argue an actor is more important than a scientist.
    D. To explain a journey to the South Pole matters a lot.

C 2. A 3. B 4. B
根据第一段中“The US space agency is looking for a “joker” to join their planned mission to Mars.(美国宇航局正在寻找一名“爱开玩笑的人”加入他们计划中的火星任务)”以及倒数第二段中““Being funny won’t be enough to land somebody the job,” Johnson said. “They also need to be an excellent scientist and engineer.”(Johnson 说:“有趣并不足以让某人得到这份工作,他们还需要是一名优秀的科学家和工程师。”)”
根据第三段“This is probably why NASA wants an astronaut with a sense of humor. These people have the ability to pull everyone together.(这可能就是为什么美国宇航局想要一个有幽默感的宇航员。这些人有能力把大家团结起来)”可知,作者认为幽默可以通过在旅途中拉近宇航员们之间的距离帮助到宇航员。故选B。
    4. 推理判断题。根据第四段“In stressful situations, perhaps humor is a way to know we aren't alone. By laughing together, we share stress, Then we can focus on our jobs instead of just worrying.(在有压力的情况下,幽默可能是一种让我们知道自己并不孤单的方式。通过一起笑,我们分享压力,然后我们可以专注于我们的工作,而不仅仅是担心)”以及第五段“There are other examples of team “jokers”. One example is the journey to the South Pole led by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, Adolf, a cook at Amundsen' s team, was "joker". He made people laugh through the whole difficult and dangerous journey, Amundsen later wrote that Adolf was the most valuable member of the team.(还有其他团队“小丑”的例子。挪威探险家罗尔德·阿蒙森带领的南极之旅就是一个例子。阿道夫是阿蒙森探险队的一名厨师,他被称为“爱开玩笑的人”。阿蒙森在整个艰难而危险的旅程中都让人捧腹大笑,阿道夫是团队中最有价值的成员)”可推知,作者提到了厨师的例子是为了证明幽默在困难情况下的作用。故选B。

It is easier to negotiate(谈判)first salary requirement because once you are insider, the organizational constraints influence wage increases. One thing, however, is certain: your chances of getting the raise you feel you deserve are less if you don't at least ask for it. Men tend to ask for more, and they get more, and this holds true with other resources, not just pay increases. Consider Beth's story.
I did not get what I wanted when I did not ask for it. We had cubicle(小隔间)offices and window offices. I sat in the cubicles with several male colleagues. One by one they were moved into window offices, while I remained in the cubicles, several males who were hired after me also went to offices. One in particular told me he was next in line for an office and that it had been part of his negotiations for the job. I guess they thought me content to stay in the cubicles since I did not voice my opinion either way.
It would be nice we all received automatic pay increases equal to our merit(价值), but "nice" isn't a quality shared by most organizations. If you feel you deserve a good raise in pay, you'll probably have to ask for it.
Performance is your best bargaining chip (筹码) when you are seeking a raise. You must be able to prove that you deserve a raise. Timing is also a good bargaining chip. If you can give your boss something he or she needs(a new client or a sizable contract, for example)just before merit pay decisions are being made, you are more likely to get the raise you want.
Use information as a bargaining chip coo. Find out what you are worth on the open market. What will someone else pay for your services?
Go into the negotiations prepared to place your chips on the table at the appropriate time and prepared to use communication style to guide the direction of the interaction
    5. What can be inferred from Beth's story?
    A. Prejudice against women still exists in some organizations.
    B. If people want what they deserve, they have to ask for it.
    C. People should not be content with what they have got.
    D. People should be careful when negotiating for a job.
    6. We can learn from the passage that .
    A. unfairness exists in salary increases
    B. most people are overworked and underpaid
    C. one should avoid overstating one's performance
    D. most organizations give their staff automatic pay raises
    7. To get a pay raise, a person should .
    A. advertise himself on the job market
    B. persuade his boss to sign a long-term contact
    C. try to get inside information about the organization
    D. do something to impress his boss just before merit pay decisions

通过文章第二段“One by one they were moved into window offices, while I remained in the cubicles, several males who were hired after me also went to offices.(比Beth入职晚的员工一个个地从小隔间搬到带窗的办公室,而Beth仍然留在原地)”,再根据文章第二段首句“I did not get what I wanted when I did not ask for it.(我没有得到我想要的因为我没有提出要求。)”
通过文章第三段中“It would be nice we all received automatic pay increases equal to our merit(价值), but "nice" isn't a quality shared by most organizations.(得到与劳动相等的工资的上涨固然是好事,但是大部分公司并不是这样来分配工资。)” 故选A项。
根据第五段首句“Performance is your best bargaining chip (筹码) when you are seeking a raise.(当你寻求加薪时,表现是你最好的筹码。)”

    Asha, Tanzania
Hi there! My name is Asha and I'm from Tanzania. Like most teenagers, I start my day early and end it late. After school, I study at a night school to prepare for the university entrance exam. When I have time off, I prefer to be outdoors. I love nature and animals. I'm quite upset about how we treat the environment, so I do my best to help. I volunteer to plant trees and I'm a member of our school's Nature Club.

It's very difficult for young people to find a job in Europe, so I worry a lot about the future. Oh, and I'm a gaming nerd. I love Internet games so much that I have started a gaming club in my school. Maybe I'll see you online—my screen name is Fast Freddy.

    A. He studies hard to get well educated.
    B. He tries his best to help protect the environment.
    C. He has started the Nature Club in his school.
    D. He prefers to go outdoors and love animals.
    10. Why is Frieder worried about the future?
    A. Because jobs are hard for the youth to find.
    B. Because he has no money to pay for his education.
    C. Because he cannot find a job on the Internet.
    D. Because he doesn't listen to his teachers.

I started to work as an editor for a travel magazine. I didn’t really mind the work, but I wanted something more challenging. My sister sent me some details for a position in a startup. The job was a seemingly perfect mix of my skills and interests, so I jumped at it.
However, soon after I joined the company, its model changed to focus on education, and everything about my position changed. I was asked to take on the completely different roles of selling contents to teachers and training people. I had no experience in sales, training or education. I felt more a little outside my comfort zone.
I knew I wanted to grow as an individual and make a serious effect on the company. I told myself that everything feels overwhelming(巨大的)at first and I should at least try. In a way, I felt like I didn’t have a choice. I knew jumping out of the nest was the right thing for me, even though it felt pretty awful.
I was lucky to be surrounded by very helpful people, both at work and at home. My boss never asked if I thought I could do it; she asked if I was interested in trying.
I spent hours researching my company’s products. I asked lots of questions and spoke to so many teachers that there were soon more good experiences than difficult ones. I looked for chances to put in extra effort. The more I did, the better I felt.
Over time, I discovered that the job was something I could do and liked doing. It was unbelievably rewarding to see the company grow. I also learned it’s important to take risks and accept new opportunities, even when you’re not sure if you’ll do well. I don’t think there’s anything worse than failing to try. I’m so glad I tried, and it surely paid off.

    A. She got bored of her old boss.
    B. She followed her sister’s advice.
    C. She was paid too little at her old job.

    B. she knew she would do well
    C. she was hardworking and made a lot of effort
    D. people around her helped her solve the challenge
    14. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?
    A. To tell readers that failure is the mother of success.
    B. To warn about the risks and challenges when changing jobs.

Three Key Steps to Motivate Your Team to Strive for Excellence
It is a known fact that one of the most compelling reasons employees leave their job is because they feel unappreciated, or that they bring no real value to their team.19. In order to motivate and build up a team for excellence, there are some key steps that you should follow.
    20. This does not mean that you should hang out with them at the local bar, or become one of their weekend buddies. What it does mean is that if you want to motivate your team to excellence, then you should take the time to get to know your team personally by talking individually to them at different times, asking basic questions, and letting them see that you are human and accessible. 21. Recognize them as a person, not just their ability.
Too often, we are quick to praise people for a job well done, but we fail to let the person know that we appreciate them as a person. Praise them for that job well done, but take notice of their personal qualities and talents and how they bring value to the team.22. For example: “Hey Johnny, those were some great ideas you came up with in the team meeting today, I like the way you think!”
    Make their success public.
Take time in your team meetings each week to recognize and talk about the people who made a difference that week.23. This makes others want to push harder and do more as they see that hard work is valued. Many times other team members do not know what has happened in other departments, or the accomplishments that they have had, so this is also a great way for your team to keep up with the latest and greatest.
    A. Build a relationship with your team.
    B. Treat your team to something special.
    C. Let the rest of the team see that you took notice and you appreciate it.
    D. People will find it difficult to “go along” with you if they cannot “get along” with you.
E.Something special happens when we hear our name—it tells us that we are important.
F.If you want to motivate your team to do their very best, you have to let them know that they are a vital part of your team.
G.This should be done in person randomly so that they can see that you are the one who noticed and you know they are on your team.

F 20. A 21. D 22. G 23. C
    19. 根据上文“It is a known fact that one of the most compelling reasons employees leave their job is because they feel unappreciated, or that they bring no real value to their team.(众所周知,员工离开工作岗位最令人信服的原因之一就是他们觉得自己不受赏识,或者他们没有给团队带来真正的价值)”以及后文“In order to motivate and build up a team for excellence, there are some key steps that you should follow.(为了激励和建立一个卓越的团队,有一些关键步骤,你应该遵循)”可知,上文提到了员工辞职的原因,后文则提到了要激励和建立卓越的团队,可知本句承上启下,说明要激励团队做到最好的方式,后文中motivate and build up a team与F选项中motivate your team相对应。
    20. 根据后文“This does not mean that you should hang out with them at the local bar, or become one of their weekend buddies. 21. 根据上文“This does not mean that you should hang out with them at the local bar, or become one of their weekend buddies. What it does mean is that if you want to motivate your team to excellence, then you should take the time to get to know your team personally by talking individually to them at different times, asking basic questions, and letting them see that you are human and accessible.(这并不意味着你应该和他们一起去当地的酒吧,或者成为他们的周末伙伴。这意味着,如果你想激励你的团队走向卓越,那么你应该花时间亲自了解你的团队,在不同的时间单独与他们交谈,问一些基本的问题,让他们看到你是人,是可以接近的)”可知,上文主要是在说明要和团队培养关系,让他们看到领导也是人,是可以接近的,本句为本段最后一句,可推知是在承接上文说明这么做的原因。故D选项“如果人们不能和你愉快相处,他们会发现很难和你共事”符合语境,故选D。

    23. 根据上文“Take time in your team meetings each week to recognize and talk about the people who made a difference that week.(每周花点时间在团队会议上,找出并讨论当周做出不同贡献的人)”以及后文“This makes others want to push harder and do more as they see that hard work is valued. (这让其他人看到努力工作是有价值的,就会想要更努力地工作,做得更多)”可知,上文提到讨论团队中做出了不同贡献的人,后文提到让其他人看到努力工作有价值,可推知本句是在说明讨论做出不同贡献的人的行为要让其他成员看到,C选项中the rest of the team与后文others相对应。故C选项“让团队的其他成员看到你注意到了这一点,并对此表示感谢。”符合语境,故选C。
