一、阅读理解
1. Londoners are great readers. They buy vast numbers of newspapers and magazines and of books — especially paperbacks, which are still comparatively cheap in spite of ever-increasing rises in the costs of printing. They still continue to buy "proper" books, too, printed on good paper and bound (装订) between hard covers.
There are many streets in London containing shops which specialize in book-selling. Perhaps the best known of these is Charring Cross Road in the very heart of London. Here bookshops of all sorts and sizes are to be found, from the celebrated one which boasts of being "the biggest bookshop in the world" to the tiny, dusty little places which seem to have been left over from Dickens' time. Some of these shops stock, or will obtain, any kind of book, but many of them specialize in second-hand books, in art books, in foreign books, in books on philosophy, politics or any other of the countless subjects about which books may be written. One shop in this area specializes only in books about ballet!
Although it may be the most convenient place for Londoners to buy books, Charring Cross Road is not the cheapest. For the really cheap second-hand books, the collector must venture off the beaten track, to Farringdon Road, for example, in the East Central district of London. Here there is nothing so impressive as bookshops. The booksellers come along each morning and pour out their sacks of books onto small hand carts. And the collectors, some professionals and some amateurs, have been waiting for them. In places like this they can still, occasionally, pick up for a few pence an old one that may be worth many pounds.
(1).According to this passage, Charring Cross Road _________.
A.is in the suburbs of London

C.Waste time looking for books.
D.Take a risk of losing one's life
(3).On Farringdon Road, _________.
A.you can find fine books for the latest books
B.there are only small bookshops for the secondhand books
C.you can see booksellers selling books on handcarts

2. The USA is a land of immigrants. Between 1815 and 1914, the world saw the great peaceful migration in its history: 35 million people, mostly Europeans, left their homelands to start new lives in America. Why did these people risk everything by leaving their homes and families?
First, one major cause of the departure among European peasants was the rise in population which in turn led to hunger. Another was politics. Many young men fled eastern Europe to avoid being forced to join the army.
Physical hunger provided another pressing reason. Following the failure of the economy of southern Italy in the 1860s, hundreds of thousands decided to make a new start in America. Religion also encouraged millions to leave the Old World.
In short, people chose to leave their homes for social, economic and religious reasons. As a result, by 1890 among a total population of 63 million, there were more than nine million foreign-born Americans.
But what were the attractions? First of all, there was the promise of land which was so scarce in Europe. Next, factories were calling for labour, and pay and conditions were much better than back home. Men were needed to open up the West and build the long railroads, and settlers were needed to populate new towns and develop commerce. There was the space for religious communities to practice their faith in peace.
As we know, there were losers. To start with, there were those unwilling immigrants, the slaves who had been used as a source of cheap labour. Nor should we forget the equally awful fate of the American Indians. By 1860 there were 27 million free whites, four million slaves and only 488,000 free blacks.
Nowadays, the USA is still seen by millions as the Promised Land. As always, it remains an attractive place to the ambitious and the energetic who are ready to commit themselves to the land that gives them a second chance.
(1).What is not given as a reason for emigration in the passage?
A.The search for religious freedom.
B.The search for adventure.
C.Avoidance of military service.
D.Economics.
(2).The lives of 19th-Century European peasants were difficult because _______.
A.there was no shortage of land
B.there was no peace
C.the population had gone down
D.there were too many of them
(3).Which of the following can best summarize the whole passage?
A.The USA is still seen by millions as the Promised Land.
B.The USA is a land of immigrants.
C.Religion encouraged millions to leave the Old World.
D.About one-eighth of non-native born Americans live in the USA in 1890.
3. If you want to walk in the footsteps of some of the world's greatest figures, then go to Oxford. Many of Oxford's 38 colleges are open to the public all year round. Here are a few of the colleges worth visiting and some famous people who have studied there:
Christ Church College
Long before it became known as a location for the Harry Potter films, Christ Church was the college where Albert Einstein, author Charles Dodgson who wrote Alice in Wonderland, and 13 British prime ministers studied. In the largest and one of the most popular colleges, you'll want to see the paintings in the 16th-century Great Hall, historic Christ Church Cathedral—England's smallest cathedral, and listen to Great Tom, the seven-ton tower bell.

Many consider Magdalen to be one of the most beautiful of Oxford's colleges. This is where author Oscar Wilde read "Greats" (a classics course) in the 1870s, and where actor, comedian and pianist Dudley Moore earned a scholarship to study music. See the medieval(中世纪的) church with its 15th-century tower. Opposite the college is the beautiful Botanic Garden—Britain's oldest—founded in 1621.

One of the college's treasures is an astrolabe(星盘), thought to have belonged to Chaucer. The college has "the most amazing" collection of medieval coloured glass in Oxford.
Bodleian Library
The Bodleian Library, the main research library of the University of Oxford, is the largest university library in the UK. It is one of the oldest libraries in Europe, and in Britain is second in size only to the British Library. It holds more than 9 million printed items on 189 km of shelving and seats up to 2,500 readers. 9.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
A friend of mine whose name was John Smith had a bad memory, which made him famous. He was so forgetful that he sometimes forgot what he was talking about in the middle of a sentence. His wife had to constantly remind him about his meetings, his classes—even his meals! Once he forgot he had eaten breakfast twice, at home and at school. His wife liked to remind her neighbors, "If John didn't have his head tied on, he would forget that too!" Since Smith was a professor at a wellknown university, his forgetfulness was often an embarrassment to him. It wasn't that he was not clever, as some critical people tended to say, but just very very absent-minded.
One hot summer day, professor Smith decided to take his children to a seaside town about a three-hour train ride away. To make the trip more interesting for his young children, he kept the name of the town a secret. However, by the time they arrived at the station, Smith forgot the name of the town he was planning to visit. Luckily, a friend of his happened to be in the station. He offered to take care of the children while Smith hurried back home to find out where he was going.
The professor's wife was surprised to see him again so soon.
"Oh, my dear, I forgot the name of the town."
"What? You forgot the name? Maybe one day you will forget my name! Now I'll write the name of that town on a piece of paper, and you put it in your pocket and please, please don't forget where you put it."
Satisfied that she had solved the problem, she sent her husband off again. Ten minutes later she was astonished to see him outside the house for the third time.

9.答案:
Paragraph 1:
"What is the matter now?" asked his wife. "I just can't remember why I come back and where I am supposed to be going on such a hot summer day," replied the professor. However, the real reason was that he forgot where he had left his children. Sensing something wrong, Mrs Smith didn't believe his words, because whenever he told a lie, he would blink his eyes usually quickly. "Tell me the truth," ordered his wife. "As you told me, I didn't forget where I put the name of that town, but I forget the station where I left our children!" whispered the professor, his voice trembling. "What a bad memory!" shouted the wife.
Paragraph 2:
Hearing the cry, out rushed their neighbors, trying to find out what had happened. A fight between the couple was about to start when the professor's cell phone began to ring. His friend, whose patience had worn thin, phoned to complain. The professor apologized, got into his car and drove away, leaving behind a bunch of people outside the house. Being afraid that he would make matters worse again, Mrs Smith decided to follow him, who then called a taxi. By the time she caught up with her husband, the children were already back home safe and sound.
