神庙于公元前1275年,埃及第十九王朝法老拉美西斯二世统治时期建造。神庙在设计和建筑时,把当时最先进的地理、天文、数学等知识巧妙地吸收和运用了进来,使阳光在每年的2月21日和10月21日两次穿过60多米长的甬道,直接照射在寺庙最内部拉美西斯二世的雕像上,营造了举世无双的“日出奇观”。
神庙在尼罗河两岸的峭壁上凿出,高约33米,宽约37米,纵深约61米。其中神庙正面的4个巨大的雕像是法老拉美西斯二世本人。这些巨型雕像逼真地再现了法老拉美西斯二世的形象。其中的一个由于地震的破坏而缺损了头部。在4尊雕像的小腿之间有些小雕像,它们是拉美西斯二世的孩子们和他的妹妹娜弗塔瑞。
