      教材分析
      This sectin mainly cnsists f three parts, including the pening page, listening part and speaking part. The picture n the pening page is abut the UN cnference, belw which is a qute frm the famus psychlgist Frank Smith. The picture aims t shw the significant rle that languages play in internatinal cmmunicatin and cperatin while the qute further illustrate that learning a freign language ensure us a mre prmising future. Furthermre, it activates students' frmer knwledge and familiarize them with the tpic f this sectin. The listening material in this sectin is a speech which mainly talks abut learning a freign language. By emplying such writing methds as listing figures, using prnuns and cnjunctins, the speech itself is rganized lgically and cncisely, thus it can better attract audience' attentin. Lastly, the speaking part inspires students t share their mtives and reasns fr learning a freign language, thrugh which it nt nly raise students' awareness f language learning, but als braden their hrizn. The thematic cntext embdied in the text is "human and sciety" and the thematic meaning f it is explring the wide variety f languages arund the wrld, heightened ethnic pride and realize the imprtance f language learning.
      学情分析
      The students are senir tw students. They have equipped themselves with certain listening skills like listening fr main idea and details, but they lack stylistic knwledge and have difficulty in understanding the prnuns based n the cntext. Mrever, their language cmpetence needs further imprvement, which may hinder them frm expressing their ideas smthly. Hwever, they are willing and eager t cperate with the teacher and express their thughts bravely. As fr the tpic, students are familiar with language learning but the UN fficial language is relatively a new tpic t them.
      教学目标
      Ss are able t listen fr detailed infrmatin abut the UN languages and the reasns fr learning freign languages.
      Ss are able t grasp the main idea f the speech and identify such features as listing numbers, using prnuns and cnjunctins embdied in the speech t imprve its lgic and cnciseness.

      Activity1: Knwing abut UN cnference and cuntries
      The teacher shws the picture f the UN cnference n the screen and asks students the fllwing questins:
      D yu knw where the pht is taken and what is happening in the picture?
      Hw d peple frm different cuntries understand and cmmunicate with each ther?
      Here are pictures f the UN member cuntries, d yu knw wh are they? Which languages are spken in these cuntries?
      [Purpse: Ss are able t realize that languages play an imprtant rle in internatinal cmmunicatin and cperatin. It als intrduces the tpic f this unit, that is, language leaning and lays fundatin fr the fllwing listening activities cncerning languages in the UN.]
      Activity2: Learning abut languages in the UN
      Ss are asked t listen t a speech carefully and answer the fllwing questins:
      Hw many languages are there in the wrld?
      What are the fficial languages f the UN?
      What are the tw languages with the mst native speakers?
      Hw many billin peple speak the UN’s fficial languages as their native r secnd language?
      What’s the functin f the numbers used in the passage?
      [Purpse: By listening fr details, Ss are are able t cultivate their listening skill. Since the answers f the questins are all abut language and include numbers, Ss are able t further familiarize themselves with the tpic f this unit and grasp hw the text is rganized by listing numbers.]
      Activity3: Figuring ut the reasns fr learning freign languages
      Ss are asked t listen t the speech again t cmplete the table and answer the questins.

      As they think it means better jb chances in the future. The UN has six fficial languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish. They are spken by arund 2.8 billin peple as their native r secnd languages.

      Wrk in pairs, discuss the questin and make a dialgue: Which ther language wuld yu chse t study and why?

Meanwhile, thrugh pair wrk, Ss are able t clarify the functin f language and try t explre the thematic meaning f the text.]
      Activity4: Summarizing the features f the speech
      Ss are asked t listen t the first paragraph f the speech again and fill in the blanks.
      T sme students, it seems that the nly freign language t learn is English. There are hwever, nearly 7000 language in the wrld. After Chinese, the language with the mst native language speaker isn’t English ---- it’s Spanish! Leaning English is very useful, but it is wise t learn at least ne ther freign language, if pssible.

      Activity5: Discussing and sharing understandings
      Based n the frmer listening activities, Ss are asked t review the qute n the pening page and share their understandings with grup members.

      As a native Chinese speaker, hw des Chinese "set yu a crridr fr life"?

      A speech cmpetitin themed "T Be A Freign Language Learner" will be launched in yur schl next Friday and as ne f the cmpetitrs, yu are ging t deliver a speech abut the freign language yu want t learn and giving reasns. Try t use what yu have learned in the class t help yu.
