In the 1930s, the first cake mixes (蛋糕粉) which nly required water were invented and sme peple argued that this apprach, the easiest, was the best. But thers thught cks wuld want t d mre. The cake-mix argument may be ut-dated, but its central questin remains: Just hw demanding d we want ur technlgies t be?
Then what is a demanding technlgy? Tw elements are included: One is that it is technlgy that takes time t master, and the ther is that its peratin includes sme real risk f failure.
Therefre, a pian is a demanding technlgy, as is a prgramming language r a machine system.
Hwever, s-called easy technlgies usually require little cncentrated effrt and prduce predictable results. Clearly, easy technlgies have remade human sciety ver the past century, but the prblem is that, as every individual task becmes easier, we demand much mre f bth urselves and thers. As a result, we are faced with a larger number f small tasks(writing hundreds f e-mails)instead f fewer difficult tasks (writing several lng letters). And, when every task is easy, nearly all peple are multitasking (多任务处理).
Easy technlgies suppsedly free us t fcus n what matters, but smetimes what matters gets eliminated. Everyne knws that it is easier t drive t the tp f a muntain than t hike; the views may be the same, but the feeling never is. Fllwing the same idea, we develp int beings that can d mre. Hwever, we can’t get the same satisfactin as we expect.
I dn’t mean that everything needs t be dne the hard way. But we must take challenges seriusly, r we’ll face the danger f becming creatures whse lives are less satisfying.

Hney has been used thrughut histry in a number f ways. One f the mst remarkable things abut it is that it never ges bad. It may crystallize, meaning that it becmes slid in parts, but simply warming it slightly will melt the crystals and return the hney t its liquid frm.
N ne knws exactly hw lng hney has been used by humans, but Spanish cave paintings dated at 7,000BC shw early evidence f beckeeping. Hney was als used by the ancient Egyptians as a sweetener, as a gift t the gds, and even as an element used t create mummies. Hney has been fund inside the Egyptian pyramids, and althugh that hney was mre than 3,000 years ld, it wuld still taste like hney and be safe t eat. N ther fd has such lasting pwer!
Besides its many uses as a sweetener, hney has lng been used as a medicinal remedy (疗法). Because it’s difficult fr any kind f bacteria (细菌) t survive in hney, it makes a perfect barrier n cuts and can prevent infectin. Hney is als an effective remedy t relieve a painful thrat. It has even been fund t be as effective in easing cughs in children.

In a wrld f music streaming services, access t almst any sng is just a few clicks away nline. Yet, the live perfrmance lives n. Peple still fill sweaty basements, dirty fields and crwded cncert halls t hear their favurite musicians play. And nw neurscientists might knw why live music attracts the brain’s emtin centers mre than its recrded ne.
Cncerts are immersive scial experiences in which peple listen t and feel the music tgether thrugh key changes and rhythmic drps. Mrever, they are dynamic — artists can adapt their playing accrding t the crwd’s reactin.
It was this last difference that led neurscientists, based at the Universities f Zurich and Osl, t study the brain respnses f peple listening t music. In the “live” experiment, participants lay in an MRI scanner (扫描仪) listening t the music thrugh earphnes, while a pianist was psitined utside the rm. The pianist was shwn the participant’s real-time (实时的) brain activity as a frm f feedback. In the recrded cnditin, participants listened t pre-recrded versins f the same music.
The scientists were interested in hw live music affected the areas f the brain respnsible fr prcessing emtins, particularly the amygdala, an area deep inside the brain. The results, just published in the jurnal PNAS, shwed that live music had a significantly greater emtinal impact. Whether the music expressed happiness r sadness, live perfrmances led t increased activity nt nly in the amygdala but als ther parts f the brain’s emtin prcessing netwrk. The researchers als fund that participants’ brain activity tracked the acustic (声学的) features f the music, like temp and pitch, far mre clsely when it was played live.
While the study didn’t fully recreate the live cncert experience, the findings suggest that artists’ ability t adjust their perfrmance in real time cntributes t the emtinal cnnectin with live music. Sme musical cmpanies nw attempt t recreate live cncerts, such as ABBA Vyage, an immersive pre-recrded VR cncert, but withut artists’ capability t read audience’s emtins and respnd accrdingly, it will never quite match the real thing.
32.Why d peple attend live shws despite music streaming services nline?
A.Because they prefer being with friends at a cncert.
B.Because they enjy the prcess f finding ppular music.
C.Because they value the emtinal cnnectin live music brings.
D.Because they intend t meet their favrite musicians in persn.
33.The rle f the pianist in the “live” experiment is t_________.
A.bserve the participants’ brain activity as a frm f feedback
B.prvide live music accmpaniment t participants inside the MRI scanner
C.cmpare the effectiveness f live perfrmances and recrded nes
D.shw participants’ ability t read and respnd t the audience’s emtins
34.What did the study published in PNAS find abut the impact f live music n the brain?
A.Live music affected nly the amygdala f the brain.
B.The participants’ brain activity didn’t react t live music.
C.Live music had a reduced emtinal impact cmpared t recrded music.
D.The participants’ brain respnded mre greatly t acustic features f live music.
35.What des the authr suggest by mentining ABBA Vyage in the last paragraph?
A.It lacks artists’ respnse based n audience’s feedback.
B.It matches the sund quality f live perfrmances.
C.It greatly stirs up the audience’s emtinal respnse.
D.It fails t create a perfect perfrming atmsphere.
