    Language as a System of Symbols(符号)

    Of all systems of symbolslanguage is the most highly developed. It has been pointed out that human beingsby agreementcan make anything stand for anything. Human beings have agreedin the course of centuries of mutual(相互的) dependencyto let the various noises that they can produce with their lungsthroatstonguesteethand lips systematically stand for certain happenings in their nervous systems. We call that system of agreements language.

    There is no necessary connection between the symbol and that which it stands for. Just as social positions can be symbolized by feathers worn on the headby gold on the watch chainor by a thousand other things according to the culture we live inso the fact of being hungry can be symbolized by a thousand different noises according to the culture we live in.

    However obvious these facts may appear at first glancethey are actually not so obvious as they seem except when we take special pains to think about the subject. Symbols and the things they stand for are independent of each otheryet we all have a way of feeling as ifand sometimes acting as ifthere were necessary connections. For examplethere are people who feel that foreign languages are unreasonable by natureforeigners have such funny names for thingsand why cant they call things by their right namesThis feeling exhibits itself most strongly in those English and American tourists who seem to believe that they can make the natives of any country understand English if they shout loud enough. Like the little boy who is reported to have saidPigs are called pigs because they are such dirty animals they feel that the symbol is inherently(内在地) connected in some way with the things symbolized.

    How words came into being is unknown.     Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which have powerful effects on our minds and feelings. This clever use of words is what we call literary style(文体).Above allthe real poet is a master of words. He can express his meaning in words which sing like musicand which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them correctlyor they will make our speech silly and common.
