My school appeared on the news last week because we had made an important change in our local area. Our class had planted a large garden in what was once only a vacant lot. It was a lot of work but it was all worth it. I got blisters(水泡) from digging, and we all got insect bites, too.
I learned a lot about gardening and collaboration(合作), and then I learned about the media. Our teacher telephoned the TV station and informed them of what we had accomplished. She spoke with the producer. The producer checked with the directors, but they said there were plenty of stories similar to ours. They wanted to know what was special about our particular garden, since many schools plant them.
The teacher explained that, after going on the Internet to learn about the prairie(大草原), we had made a prairie garden. We had gone to a prairie and gotten seeds from the plants, and then we planted them. We did not water the garden, but we did weed it. We decided to let nature water it with rain, since that was how prairies grew in the past. We sent a picture of the garden to the news station. In the picture, the grass was so high that it stood taller than the fourth grade students.
As a result, the producer sent a reporter to our school. He interviewed the headmaster and asked him many questions about the garden. After that, they interviewed us, and we explained to them what we had learned through this project.
That night, we watched the news, and there we were. The news reporter told our story. It was only two minutes long, but it was us. We were famous. All that work, all those blisters, it was worth it. We knew that when we saw the garden every day, but now we knew that the whole city thought so, too.
4.What seemed to be the TV directors’ initial reaction to the garden?
A.They were excited.
B.They were surprised.

5.What is special about the garden?

We had gone to a prairie and gotten seeds from the plants, and then we planted them.”可知,电视台工作者想知道作者班级做的花园有什么特别之处时,老师解释说这个花园的植物种子来自于草原上的植物。由此可知,这个花园的特别之处在于花园里的植物种子真正来自于草原上的植物。故选C项。

My brother, Michael and I are crazy about houses. On Aug 1, 2016, I was driving through the Northern Neck of Virginia with him. We had found an abandoned Italianate farmhouse with weeds up to our waist. When admiring the property my brother rolled up the unlocked garage door. “Holy smokes!” There sat this Mercedes. Seeing the number 6.9 on its back, I immediately recognized this to be a rare and unique find.
The car’s door was unlocked and in the glovebox, I found insurance papers. It turned out that the owner was a dead country doctor. It took me a year to find his widow’s(寡妇的) address, in Richmond. Twice I made the twohour drive just to knock on her door, striking out both times. On the third try her neighbor was outside and I was able to get the widow’s phone number.
I logged approximately 25 voice mails, and still nothing. It was, I thought, just bad luck. I called one last time and heard a voice: “Hello?” From that point on, we struck up a friendship.
In July 2018, two years after finding the car, I was ready to buy it from her. We met in the middle — somewhere around what a new Toyota might cost. Still, the night before, I called my brother and said, “I_am_getting_cold_feet. What was I doing buying an old Mercedes?” He said, “You are buying that great car. And I promise you, the friendship you will make as a result will make this car worth every penny.” And he was right.
8.Why did the author go to the Northern Neck?
A.To visit his brother.
B.To check the house.
C.To buy the unique car.
D.To enjoy the beautiful sights.
9.What can we infer from the second and third paragraphs?
A.The author had trouble finding the car owner.
B.The car was the doctor’s only possession.
C.The widow was unwilling to sell the car.
D.The car was in bad conditions.
10.What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean?
A.He was shocked by the price.
B.He was hesitating to make the decision.
C.He cared about money more than the car.
D.The weather that day was quite cold.
11.What did Michael think of buying the car?
A.It was a waste of money.
B.It would cost a great deal.
C.Buying the car brought good friendship.
D.His brother made a good bargain buying it.

I am a mother of three children and have recently completed my college degree. The last class I had to take was social study. The last class was asked to go out and smile at three people and document their reactions.
Soon after we were given the project, my husband, my youngest son, and I went out to McDonald’s one cold March morning. It was just our way of sharing special playtime with our son.
We were standing in line, waiting to be served, when all of a sudden everyone around us began to back way. I turned around and found there standing behind me were two poor homeless men with a horrible “dirty body” smell. The short gentleman, close to me, was “smiling”. His beautiful skyblue eyes were full of light as he searched for acceptance. The second man played with his hands uneasily as he stood behind his friend. I realized the second man was mentally challenged and the blueeyed gentleman was his salvation(救赎). The short man just asked for a coffee because that was all they could afford.
I smiled and asked the young lady behind the counter to give me two more breakfast meals on a separate tray(餐盘).I then walked around the corner to the men’s table. I put the tray on the table and laid my hand on the blueeyed gentleman’s cold hand. He looked up at me with tears in his eyes and said “Thank you”.
I started to cry as I walked away to join my husband and son. When I sat down, my husband smiled at me and said, “That’s why God gave you to me, Honey. To give me hope.”
On the last evening of class, I turned in “my project” and the instructor read it. Then she looked up at me and said, “Can I share this?” I slowly nodded as she got the attention of the class. She began to read and we all knew that we need to help people and to be helped.
I graduated with one of the biggest lessons I would ever learn: UNCONDITIONAL ACCEPTANCE. “LOVE PEOPLE AND USE THINGS — NOT LOVE THINGS AND USE PEOPLE.”
12.Why did the people around the author back away?
A.Because the second man stood playing with his hands.
B.Because the two homeless men were also waiting in line, with a bad smell.
C.Because the short gentleman was smiling to everyone around.
D.Because both men were poorly dressed and mentally ill.
13.After the author handed the meals to the homeless men, she ________.
A.regretted and cried
B.turned in her project
C.went back to her husband and son
D.talked with them for a while

A.Poor as the homeless men were, they had their dignity.
B.The author felt we should know how to help people.

It also offered us a platform where we could display traditional Chinese culture like papercutting and Chinese painting to more foreigners. It will arouse people’s greater interest in each other’s culture and promote cultural exchange. We are sure to develop a closer friendship as more activities are held.
We would like to invite you to visit China this summer holiday, so you can experience the Chinese culture in person and have a deeper understanding of it.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li_Hua

Last Saturday, David was taking a walk in the park near his home when he noticed a woman with a boy of about eight years old. When David passed them, he heard the woman yell, “How stupid you are! You’re good at nothing.”David stopped and looked at the little boy. The boy said nothing. He just stood there, looking upset.
David was reminded of his English teacher Mrs Brown in middle school. After he entered middle school, David lacked selfconfidence because he was often made fun of by others. He was often told that he was good at nothing, which David believed. But one day it all changed.
One day, in an English writing class, Mrs Brown asked them to read a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter of the novel after they finished reading the book. A few days later, David handed in his story. He didn’t give it much thought. But the next day to his surprise, the comment “well done” from Mrs Brown came into view the moment he turned to the page where the story was written.
When David read that, he almost burst into tears. He never expected to be praised one day. He suddenly gained some selfconfidence.
That day after he returned home, he wrote a short story and gave it to Mrs Brown the next morning. And again he was praised.
David became very interested in writing. He often wrote short stories and asked Mrs Brown to read them and correct them for him. Mrs Brown always correct them for him. Mrs Brown always corrected the mistakes he had made and gave him good advice to improve them. One year later, David joined the school newspaper and became an editor of it. He was no longer that boy who lacked selfconfidence. He gained his confidence and was hopeful about his future.
He succeeded in entering college and kept writing. Several years after graduating from college, he had his first book published. With some more books coming out, he became famous as a writer in his country. And he owed his success to Mrs Brown’s encouragement. Without her encouragement, his life might be very different now.

【答案】One possible version:
Inspired_by_his_own_life_story,_David_decided_to_do_something_for_that_boy. He went to the woman, who immediately recognized him because she had read his books and seen his pictures. David started to chat with her. He told her that what she said to her boy was not appropriate. Then he told her about the encouragement he once got from Mrs Brown. In the end, he said, “I couldn’t have become a writer if I had believed I was good at nothing.”
The_mother_was_ashamed_when_she_heard_that. She realized that she shouldn’t have called her son stupid, which would make his lose confidence in himself. So she said, “Thank you for your advice. I’ll never say such things to him again.Instead, I’ll find out what he’s good at and encourage him.” The woman then left with the boy. Looking at the back of the boy, David felt relieved, hoping his action could make some difference to the boy.
