Section Ⅰ Reading and Thinking (1)
    A
Every time you go shopping, the vegetables and fruit look so tempting that you wish you could buy all of them. Some people are lucky and can grow the fruit and vegetables in the gardens that they have. While getting fresh vegetables, they can also achieve great cost-cutting.
Mushrooms are expensive and can also go bad very quickly. Mushrooms can also be grown easily in a dark environment. In fact it’s better than growing other vegetables since you really don’t need an outdoor space. A special type of soil that is good for growing mushrooms is easily available.
Actually mushrooms aren’t even vegetables; they are fungi(菌类) and for this reason, you don’t even require sunlight to grow them. Well, how does one go about growing mushrooms? You could always type “growing mushrooms” on the Internet and you will find a number of mushroom growing kits(工具) available online that are effective and not very expensive either.
Mushrooms can be added to any dish that you cook. Simply use them in pizzas, salads and anything that you pretty much fancy. Grow mushrooms in your own house and use them whenever you want. Fresh mushrooms are tastier than the ones that are stored in your refrigerator.
If you have had a really good crop of mushrooms, then you can even store them. Ideally you should use the white variety of the mushrooms. Simply pick them, slice them and put them on a baking tray in a freezer. When they are frozen, you can use them when you want to. Remember to thaw(解冻) them before you use them, and they will give a really great taste to the dish that you are making.
    1. What can we know about growing mushrooms?
    A. It takes much attention.
    B. It needs lots of sunshine.

根据第一段的第二句“Some people are lucky and can grow the fruit and vegetables in the gardens that they have.”

Banker Chip Paillex had never planted so much until he moved to the countryside in Pittstown, New Jersey, seven years ago. Surrounded by working farms, he quickly became interested in the grow-it-yourself idea and rented a piece of 30-by-30-foot land. He planted tomatoes, eggplants and other vegetables—enough to feed his family of four for summer. He ended up with so much produce; he couldn’t give it away. He found a local food factory, and donated 120 pounds of fresh vegetables.
The following year, with a handful of volunteers and a memorable name—America’s Grow-a-Row, Chip harvested 1,500 pounds of fresh vegetables, all of which he donated to food banks that give food to poor people. Soon Chip had a hundred volunteers and needed more land. He visited Meredith and Jeremy Compton, who farm Peaceful Valley Orchards in Pittstown. Could he work on their land?
“I guess we were feeling honoured,” says Meredith. Not only do the Comptons welcome Grow-a-Row volunteers, but they also work on the land.
What began with a few empty fields has turned into a large local farm. This year, Grow-a-Row will deliver about 250,000 pounds of fresh produce to food banks. Their secret for getting all of this done?Family power. “Each week, a couple of families ‘own’ the garden,” says Chip. “They water, pick, and deliver, and then hand it off on Sunday night to the next group of families.”
Chip also welcomes local school kids. On a Friday morning in May, some kids worked on a field. “We’re growing food,” one fifth grader said proudly.
“The programme shows kids that there are people in need,” says Chip. “When these kids become tomorrow’s leaders, they’ll be much more likely to encourage their co-workers or employees to get involved in something like this.”
“Chip makes people want to help,” says Colleen Duerr, a mother of two. “And families love this. Chip has given us a way to raise our kids with a giving heart.”

    4. Why did Chip start growing vegetables in Pittstown?
    A. He was deeply attracted by planting.
    B. Farmers there encouraged him to do so.
    C. He wanted to offer food to the local food factory.
    D. There were very few fresh vegetables on the market.
根据第一段中的“Surrounded by working farms,he quickly became interested in the grow-it-yourself idea ...”
    答案:A
    5. What did Chip do after a year’s planting?
    A. He set up more food banks in the area.
    B. He won great support from more people.
    C. He helped save many people from being poor.
    D. He persuaded many people to help him on the land.
根据第二段中的“... with a handful of volunteers ... Chip had a hundred volunteers ...”
    6. How can Grow-a-Row manage to produce so much food?
    A. School children play the most active part.
    B. The work is divided into separate small tasks.
    C. Families take turns to look after the garden.
    D. Schools and families divide the work equally.
根据第四段中的“Each week,a couple of families ‘own’ the garden ... ‘They water, pick, and deliver, and then hand it off on Sunday night to the next group of families.’”
    7. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
    A. Chip’s Country Life
    B. American Farms
    C. Grow It Yourself
    D. The Producers

The Milk Squad is a group of nine young men in the eastern American city of Baltimore, Maryland. For them, skateboarding(滑板运动) is more than a sport. It is a way of life. The Milk Squad brings together young people of different races and beliefs. Almost every day, you can see all nine with their skateboards and bright orange T-shirts in Carroll Park.
Jamone McKenzie is one of the group members. His friends gave him a nickname(外号)—Psycho. The name comes from the term meaning someone with mental(精神的) problems. “The reason is that I usually do crazy things that most people wouldn’t try,” McKenzie said.
McKenzie started skating when he was nine years old. At the time, his mother was afraid that he would get injured. His great progress, however, seems to have impressed her. “Now I see she is no longer angry when people mention me. Instead, she takes pride in me,” he said.
Skateboarding began in California in the middle of the 20th century. Over the years, the sport’s popularity has spread around the world. However, skateboarders often wonder where to play skateboard. Stephanie Murdock is the founder of a non-profit organisation that supports the skaters. She helped to raise almost one million dollars for a new skate park.
Group leader Jamal said skateboarders should be as valuable as baseball players or as basketball players and more skate parks should be built to interest other young people, including girls, in the sport. Despite all the difficulties, the new skate park is expected to open soon.
As for the Milk Squad’s members, they have received a sponsorship(资助) offer. The Bodymore skateboard company is providing them with hats, T-shirts, and skateboards for free.
    8. What do we know about the Milk Squad?
    A. Its members are of the same age.
    B. It encourages people to take exercise.
    C. It is the most famous skating group in Maryland.
    D. Skateboarding is part of daily life for its members.
根据第一段的“It is a way of life ... Almost every day, you can see all nine with their skateboards and bright orange T-shirts in Carroll Park.”
    9. Why do people call Jamone McKenzie Psycho?
    A. He joined the Milk Squad.
    B. He suffered mental problems.
    C. He often acts in an unusual way.
    D. He is the best player among his friends.
根据第二段的“‘The reason is that I usually do crazy things that most people wouldn’t try’,McKenzie said.”
    10. What’s the main problem that the skateboarders face?
    A. Skateboarding is not well received in the world.
    B. There are not enough places for them to practise.
    C. Skateboarding often causes serious injury to them.
    D. Their parents are often against this dangerous sport.
根据第四段的“However, skateboarders often wonder where to play skateboard.”
    11. What do Jamal’s words tell us?
    A. Skateboarding needs support.
    B. Skateboarding is not suitable for girls.
    C. Skateboarders do better than baseball players.
    D. The hard work of the Milk Squad has paid off.
根据倒数第二段的“... skate-boarders should be as valuable as baseball players or as basketball players and more skate parks should be built ...”
