Humans have little difficulty recognizing one another. And we know that no two faces are exactly alike. Even identical twins have slightly different faces. Each human face is truly unique, and now we've invented machines that are able to recognize faces for numerous purposes.
Governments, employers and security and police services are increasingly using facial recognition technology. This allows them to quickly confirm an individual's identity. Systems are becoming so advanced that a wanted criminal can instantly be picked out of a crowd of thousands of people. All that's required is an image in a database to compare with the image of any number of people in a crowd. Ordinary people, too, are using facial recognition to unlock their phones, their computers and other devices.
Personal facial recognition protection has several benefits. It is instantaneous, and it relieves us of the need to memorize passwords. However, a device will require a password in the rare event that it doesn't, for whatever reason, recognize the user's face.
There are numerous concerns about the use of facial recognition. Primarily, the concern is that it threatens privacy. The installation of more and more cameras in public and private places is now part of everyday life. This means people can be observed and recognized wherever they go. Cameras may make public spaces safer, but keeping law-abiding(守法的) citizens under constant watch is disturbing to many.
In the age of the corona-virus and the widespread wearing of masks, facial recognition systems are having some difficulty. A mask covers many of the facial data points used by recognition software to confirm a person's identity. In response, facial recognition systems are being trained to use less facial data. That could affect how dependable it is as a method of identity detection.
4. What's the author's purpose of writing Paragraph 2?
A. To further explain the importance of facial recognition.
B. To describe the powerful functions of facial recognition.
C. To list in detail various advantages of facial recognition.
D. To state the unique advanced features of facial recognition.
5. Why are some people worried about the cameras?
A. The cameras may be occasionally out of order.
B. Too many cameras disturb people's daily life.
C. People's personal life might be exposed to others.
D. The cameras make law-abiding citizens feel stressful.
6. In what aspect will facial recognition systems be improved?
A. Getting more accurate with less information.
B. Becoming faster with more facial data.
C. Protecting personal information if necessary.
D. Responding more quickly to unexpected events.
7.What is the text mainly about?
A. The wide popularity of facial recognition.
B. The rapid development of facial recognition.
C. The benefits of facial recognition.
D. The introduction to facial recognition.
Primarily, the concern is that it threatens privacy""This means people can be observed and recognized wherever they go"以及"but keeping law-abiding citizens under constant watch is disturbing to many"可推知,相机的安装有可能会威胁到人们的隐私,即隐私有可能会被暴露,故C项正确。
【6答案】A
A mask covers many of the facial data points used by recognition software to confirm a person's identity. In response, facial recognition systems are being trained to use less facial data"可知,面部识别下一步的提升方向就是用更少的数据获得更精确的结果。

Shark attacks not only disturb beach activities, but can affect associated tourism industries. Shark nets are a common solution to preventing shark attacks on beaches, but they cause dangers to sea ecosystems.
Seeking a cost-effective way to monitor beach safety over large areas we have developed a system called SharkSpotter. It combines artificial intelligence(A1),computing power, and drone(无人机)technology to identify and warn lifesavers of sharks near swimmers. The project is a cooperation between the University of Technology Sydney and the Ripper Group, which is pioneering the use of drones-called"Westpac Little Ripper Lifesaver" in the search and rescue movement in Australia.
Shark Spotter can detect sharks and other potential threats using real time aerial imagery. The system analyzes videos from a camera attached to a drone to monitor beaches for sharks, send warnings, and conduct rescues.Developed with techniques known as "deep learning", the Shark Spotter system receives imagery from the drone camera and attempts to identify all objects in the scene. Once certain objects are detected, they are put into one of 16 categories: sharks, whales, dolphins, rays, different types of boats surfers, and swimmers.
If a shark is detected, Shark Spotter provides both a visual sign on the computer screen and an audible warning to the operator. The operator confirms the warning and sends text messages from the Shark Spotter system to the surf lifesavers for further action. In an emergency, the drone is equipped with a life-saving flotation pod(漂浮舱)together with an electronic shark repellent(驱逐装置)that can be dropped into the water in cases where swimmers are in severe trouble, trapped in a rip, or if there are sharks close by.
In January 2018, the Westpac Little Ripper Lifesaver was used to rescue two young swimmers caught in a rip at Lennox Head, New South Wales (NSW). The drone flew down the beach some 800 meters from the lifeguard station, and a life-saving flotation pod was dropped from the drone The complete rescue operation took 70 seconds.
We believe Shark Spotter is a win-win for both marine(海洋的)life and beachgoers. This unique technology combines dynamic video image processing AI and advanced drone technology to creatively deal with the global challenge of insuring safe beaches, protecting environments, and romoting tourism.
8.What is a Shark Spotter?
A.A solution to monitor sharks.
B. An equipment to identify lifesavers.
C.A technology to prevent shark attacks.
D.A project to pioneer the use of drones.
9. When a shark is spotted near a swimmer, what will the system do?
A . Take timely action .
B. Analyze the visual data.
C. Classify the identified objects.
D. Turn on the "deep learning" mode.
10. What does the example in Paragraph 5 show us?
A. The system is efficient in saving lives.
B.The system is effective in detecting sharks.
C. The system is smart in driving sharks away.
D. The system is practical over the whole sea area.
11.What is the author's attitude toward the future of SharkSpotter?
A . Doubtful . B.Optimistic.
C. Negative. D.Objective.
It combines artificial intelligence(AI),computing power, and drone technology to identify and warn lifesavers of sharks near swimmers." SharkSpotter can detect sharks and other potential threats using real-time aerial imagery."
【9答案】A
根据第四段中的“In an emergency, the drone is equipped with a life-saving flotation pod together with an electronic shark repellent that can be dropped into the water in cases where swimmers are in severe trouble, trapped in a rip, or if there are sharks close by."可知,当遇到紧急情况时,无人机上配备的救生漂浮舱和电子驱鲨器会被放入水中,即系统会在游泳者遇上麻烦时及时采取行动,故选A项。
【10答案】A

In the past decade, the use of social media has grown in a way that no one could have guessed. It has turned some teenagers into celebrities and turned the famous into the infamous, overnight.
A key feature of social media, however, is its volatility.Trends come and go, disappearing almost as quickly as they appeared.
Short video apps such as Tik Tok and its Chinese equivalent(对应物)Douyin, took the world by storm. The Telegraph reported that Tik Tok was ranked 8th on Apple's App Store in April. And Douyin had more than 300 million domestic monthly active users in June, CNBC said.
Why are these short videos-which are rarely longer than a few minutes-so popular? Jiang Yige, Singapore-based analyst at FengHe Fund Management, has a theory. "Short videos are just right to fill in the little gaps in our busy schedules,"he told CNBC.
These videos--apart from being very convenient--are important to teenagers because they allow them to express themselves, according to Teen Vogue.
Liza Koshy, a user of the US app Musical. ly who has over 2 million followers, said,"The sense of community that users of short video apps get is another appealing feature."
Live streaming(直播)is a feature of our social media life that now seems as natural as sunrise . It's a pretty neat idea : You can watch anyone , anywhere , live . However , China has taken live streaming to a whole new level. In China, more than 100million viewers monthly watch a live streaming video. Forbes thought that a number of factors had led to the popularity of live streams. Among them is viewers' ability to interact with others using unknown names.
However, the quick development of social media may be having side effects too. Fake news is one serious problem it causes. Materials shared on these platforms are often not checked for accuracy. The most basic content can be false and can mislead users one way or another. We use social media all the time; that doesn't mean that we understand the influence it is having on us. We should be mindful of both the time we spend on it and its impact on our minds.
12. The underlined word "volatility" in Paragraph 2 possibly means "being__".
A.changeable B.steady
C.promising D.violent
13. According to Liza Koshy, short videos are very popular because_____.
A.they are very convenient
B.they help people kill time
C.they provide a sense of community
D.they allow people to express themselves
14.What do we know about social media?
A.The information from social media is totally reliable.
B.When it comes to social media, people only know short videos.
C.People can't communicate with each other without social media.
D. There is still much room for improvement in social media.
15.What is the author's attitude to the quick development of social media?
A.Objective.
B.Subjective.
C.Favorable.
D.Disapproving.
【12答案】.A
Trends come and go,disappearing most as quickly as they appeared.
根据第六段Liza Koshy说的话“The sense of cor munity that users of short video apps get is another appealing feature."知,他认为短视频软件受用户欢迎的原因是他们能从中得到团体属感,故C项正确。其他选项均不是Liza Koshy的观点,故排除。
【14答案】.D

第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Distraction exists in every corner of our lives. Though small, anything that pulls you away from your focus can get in the way of your productivity. Follow the tips below to sharpen your focus.
Keep your vision and goals in mind. It's important to start with a good base for your focus as you learn how to avoid distraction. 16 Do you have a big presentation at work next week that you need to prepare for? Do you have a dream of learning to play the guitar and need to focus for an hour each day while you practice?
17 If you have 20 tasks to do every day, how effective do you think your focus ability will be? You need to break them down. Focus on only doing 2-3 important tasks at a time. It's all you need to take steps towards accomplishing your goals.
18 Most goals will at least take a few weeks to months to accomplish. Thus, you become discouraged because the goal is too big. Or you fantasize about what it'll feel like when you achieve the goal. 19 Instead, focus on doing a very small, minimum amount of work.
Do those tasks as soon as possible. In order to make sure you get tasks done, you need to do them early in order to stay focused on the task without feeling overwhelmed. This means that as soon as you wake up, you should start plotting how to do them. 20
A. Skip what you don't know.
B. Reduce the chaos of your day.
C. This will cause you to do one of the two things.
D. Focus on the smallest part of your work at a time.
E. Figure out exactly why you need to focus in the first place.
F. Waiting to do them later only invites distraction to take over.
G. Either is terrible for your focus and always a potential problem.
Keep your vision and goals in mind”可知,本段主要讲的是要明确目标。
If you have 20 tasks to do every day"和"You need to break them down""Focus on only doing 2-3 important tasks at a time"可知,要把任务分类,一次只做两三件重要的任务。
【解析】 根据空后的”you become discouraged because the goal is too big”可知,目标过大很容易灰心丧气;再根据该段尾句”Instead, focus on doing a very small, minimum amount of work”可知,本段主要讲的是要集中注意力做非常小的工作,D项”每次专注于你工作中最小的部分”可以概括全段。
Thus, you become discouraged because the goal is too big. Or you fantasize about what it'll feel like when you achieve the goal"提出了因为目标太大而变得泪丧和幻想实现目标后的感受两种情况,所以G项”这两者对你的注意力都不好,并且总是潜在的问题”能够承接上文,G选项中的Either指两种情况中的任何一种。
Do those tasks as soon as possible"可知,要尽早完成任务;再根据空格前的"as soon as you wake up, you should start plotting how to do them"可知,一起床就要想着怎么做,故可推知空处应说拖延的坏处,F项”等到以后再做,只会让你分神”符合语境。

Joan excitedly packed her bags for her upcoming trip with her family. They were driving from New York to Virginia to go on a brief visit to their distant relatives. She was bursting with impatience to play with her cousins and chat away with her aunt and uncle.
After all of the suitcases had been loaded into the car, Tonny, Joan’s father, looked to Joan and her mother, Flora. “Is everyone ready for our road trip?” They both smiled and nodded.
It was going to be quite a long journey, and within a couple of hours Joan had already begun to feel tired. She began to nod off when she noticed the car veering off the road, sharply to the left.
Tonny managed an emergency stop, got out and walked around the car. He scratched his head, looking confused. Then, he gave a great sigh. “We have a flat tire(轮胎), ”he said to Flora.
“Use the spare tire in the trunk. Then we can replace it when we reach Virginia, ”she suggested. Tonny looked down at his feet sheepishly. “I…haven’t had the spare tire replaced since the last time we had a flat.”Flora seemed upset, but tried to remain positive. “Maybe we can call a service,”she suggested. But a quick glance at their cellphones told them that there was no signal in the area. Joan looked at her mother in the front seat, and her father still staring blankly at the flat tire outside. Both of them looked concerned.
Joan began to get worried. No other cars had passed by in a while and it seemed like they were far away from a town center. She looked out the window, wondering if they would have to sleep in the car or if there was any way they could possibly find someone to help them. Would they ever make their way to Virginia? Her relatives would surely be worried about them.
