Recently, I flew to Las Vegas to attend a meeting. As we were about to arrive, the pilot announced with apology that there would be a slight delay before setting down. High desert winds had forced the airport to close all but one runway. He said that we would be circling the city for a few minutes waiting to land. We were also told to remain in our seats meanwhile with our seat belts fastened because there might be a few bumps(颠簸). Well, that few minutes turned into about four—five minutes, including a ride that would make a roller coaster easy by comparison.
The movement was so fierce that several passengers felt sick and had to use airsickness bags. As you might guess, that’s not good thing to have happen in a(n)narrow space because it only serve to increase the discomfort of the situation. About twenty minutes into the adventure, the entire airplane became very quiet.
There was now a sense of anxiety and fear that could be clearly noticed. Every passenger simply held on for dear life …except one. A bay was having a good time! With each bump of the airplane he would let out a giggle(咯咯的笑)of delight. As I observed this, I realized that he didn’t know he was supposed to be afraid and worried about his safety. He neither thought about the past nor about the future. Those are what we grown—ups have learned from experience. He was enjoying the ride because had not yet been taught to fear it. Having understood this, I took a deep breath and sat back into my seat, pretending I was really on a roller coaster. I smiled for the rest of the flight. I even managed to giggle once or twice, much to the chagrin(懊恼)of the man sitting next to me holding the airsickness bag.
    21. According to the pilot, what caused the delay of the plane to land?
    A. the airport closed all runways because of the high desert winds.
    B. there was something wrong with the plane.
    C. the plane would circle the city for a few minutes for the bad weather.
    D. the high desert winds made the plane couldn’t land on time.
    22. What’s the author’s attitude towards the baby?
    A. hatred B. indifference C. admiration D. concern
    23. what does the underlined word those mean in paragraph 3?
    A. no needs to concern about the past and the future. B. the sense of anxiety and fear
    C. the rides D. The passengers in the plane
    24. Why did the author’s giggle annoy the man sitting next to him?
    A. Because he didn’t like adults giggling.
    B. Because he was worrying his and his baby’s safety.
    C. Because he was airsick.
    D. Because he was physically and mentally suffering.

Singapore may raise its retirement and re-employment ages as citizens enjoy more years of good health and demonstrate sustained productivity at work.

Bats are the only mammals that can fly a great distance, but they have another ability. Many bats live a very long time for an animal their size.
European researchers are studying bats to understand why they live so long. They hope to make discoveries aimed at fighting the aging process in human beings. Last week, the group of scientists said they had identified important biological qualities in some bat species.
The group studied bat chromosomes(染色体), a line of genes found in the nucleus of cells. The scientists were most interested in structures connected to the ends of the chromosomes. They are called telomeres. Telomeres protect the ends of chromosomes, which shorten each time a cell divides. Scientists believe this shortening process causes cells to break down. They say this is what causes aging.
The European researchers studied 493 bats from four bat species. The group used information that had been gathered over more than 60 years. Of these animals, the greater mouse-eared bat generally lived the longest, an average of 37 years. The scientists said this and a related species, which are grouped together under the name Myotis had telomeres that did not shorten with age.
The scientists’ findings suggest that these bats’ cells have the ability to maintain and repair their telomeres. This, they said, helps guard against the aging process.
Based on its body size, a bat like the greater mouse-eared bat would be expected to live four years. But, these mammals have been found to live nearly 10 times longer than that.
    28. Which the following statement is right according to the text?
    A. Bats live the longest time among animals.
    B. European researchers want to fight the aging process in human being.
    C. From the information, scientists found the greater mouse-eared bat lived the longest life in all specials.
    D. Scientists have developed ways to fight aging by studying bats.
    29. According to the scientists, telomeres are_____________?
    A. structures which protect the ends of chromosomes.
    B. genes which can be found in the nucleus of cells.
    C. chromosomes which can shorten each time a cell divides.
    D. aging processes.
    30. According to the text, Myotis had the longest life among bats species, because_________?
    A. they had telomeres that keep age processing.
    B. their cells can maintain and repair their telomeres.
    C. their chromosomes were more than others.
    D. their telomeres cause cells to break down

Students who have used electronic cigarettes by the time they start ninth grade are more likely than others to start smoking tobacco products within the next year, according to a new study funded by the National Institutes of Health.
The study compared tobacco use initiation among 222 students who had used e-cigarettes, but not tobacco products, and 2,308 who had neither used e-cigarettes or tobacco products when initially surveyed at the start of ninth grade. During the first six months after being surveyed, 30.7 percent of those who had used e-cigarettes started using tobacco products, compared to only 8.1 percent of those who had never used e-cigarettes. Over the following six months leading into the start of 10th grade, 25.2 percent of e-cigarette users had used tobacco products, compared to just 9.3 percent of nonusers.
“While teen tobacco use has fallen in recent years, this study confirms that we should continue to carefully watch teen smoking patterns,” said NIDA Director Nora D. Volkow, M.D. “Parents and teens should recognize that although e-cigarettes might not have the same carcinogenic(致癌的) effects of regular cigarettes, they do carry a risk of addiction.”
“Recreational e-cigarette use is becoming increasingly popular among teens who have never smoked tobacco. Adolescents who enjoy the experience of inhaling(吸入) nicotine via e-cigarettes could be more apt to experiment with other nicotine products, including smokeable tobacco,” said Adam M. Leventhal, Ph.D., the first author on the study. “While we cannot conclude that e-cigarette use directly leads to smoking, this research raises concerns that recent increases in youth e-cigarette use could ultimately lead to the popularity of smoking-related illness.”

    2019年高考模拟试卷英语参考答案与评分标准
    第一部分. 听力(每小题1.5分,满分30分)
    1-5. BBCCA 6-10. CAAAB
    11-15.BBCBA 16-20 ABAAC
