Whenever Jane Lockshin went out to lunch with her elderly aunt Sylvia, she would offer to pay the bill. After all, Sylvia Bloom was a modest secretary, who lost her beloved husband more than a decade ago. She lived alone in a one-bedroom Brooklyn apartment and took the subway everywhere, including to her job at a Manhattan law firm. She worked there—full-time—until she was 96. Simply put, Lockshin didn’t want Aunt Sylvia to blow her budget on lunch.
So when Bloom died in 2016, at 97, it was something of a shock to discover that she’d left behind a multimillion-dollar estate. Almost as shocking: She had chosen to give $8.2 million to charity. Six million dollars went to educational programs at the Henry Street Settlement, a social services organization in New York City. An additional $2 million went to scholarship funds, including at Bloom’s alma mater, Hunter College. “She had millions,” says Lockshin, “and no one suspected it.”
Bloom’s bequest to the Settlement, the largest in its 126-year history, will help fund a program for disadvantaged students. “The gift has been transformative not just because of the good we’ll be able to do with it,” says David Garza, the agency’s executive director, “but because of the selflessness and the humility behind it.”
Sylvia Bloom’s story is indeed extraordinary, but it’s not as uncommon as you might think. Working-class benefactors—secretaries, teachers, janitors, and more—make headlines with awe-inspiring regularity.
21. Why did Jane offer to pay the bill according to paragraph 1?
A. Because her aunt lost her husband.
B. Because her aunt refused to pay it herself.
C. Because her aunt lived alone and was a secretary.
D. Because she thought her aunt didn’t have much money.
22. What does David Garza’s words mean?
A. Poor students will be funded by the money.
B. The gift is important because of nothing but the good can be done with it.
C. It is the devotion and modesty behind it that makes the gift extraordinary.
D. Jane Lockshin’s donation is thought highly of.
23. What might the following paragraph talk about?
A. The way the money was spent.
B. The way Sylvia saved so much money.
C. The inspiration Jane got from the story.
D. The story of other donors like Sylvia.

There are plenty of common fears that, even if we don’t have them ourselves, we totally understand: spiders, heights, creepy clowns. And then there’s fear of the number 13. It’s a number just like any other, and yet there are horror movies about it; some buildings intentionally have no 13th floor and plenty of couples avoid getting married on the 13th of the month.
What makes this number so scary? Well, there’s no single reason behind the widespread fear. Historians have pinpointed a few potential reasons for 13’s prevalence as an unlucky number.
The most popular theory about the origin of fear of the number 13 is connected with the Bible: there were 13 diners at the Last Supper. The 13th to arrive was Judas, who betrayed Jesus. In Norse mythology(神话), too, a table of 13 proved unlucky. According to one of the myths, the primary 12 gods were dining together peacefully until the god of evil Loki showed up. As soon as this 13th guest arrived, chaos and carnage followed. The superstition(迷信) that a table of 13 diners spells bad news even made its way into Harry Potter.
On its own, there are no problems with the number itself. It’s 13’s proximity to the number 12 that makes it look bad, according to scientists and mathematicians. In many ancient cultures, 12 was considered to be a perfect number. Civilizations as far back as ancient Sumer based their systems of telling time around the number 12. There are 12 hours on a clock and 12 months in a year. As the number immediately following this “perfect” one, 13 seemed flawed, inspiring unease throughout the ancient world.
24. The first paragraph is intended to _______.
A. attract readers’ attention on fear
B. offer background information
C. introduce the topic of the passage
D. put forward an opinion
25. The underlined word “carnage” in paragraph 3 can be replaced by ______.
A. challenge
B. confusion
C. amazement
D. violence
26. According to the passage, which of the following is true?
A. Judas betrayed Juses at the Last Supper.
B. Loki’s arrival brought about chaos during the meal.
C. In many modern cultures, 12 was regarded as a perfect number.
D. Scientists proved that the number 13 was flawed.

Earlier this year six Amazon delivery robots were introduced in a trial program in Snohomish County, Washington. The boxy machines, which resemble six-wheeled coolers, carry meals, groceries and packages to homes and offices.
As a growing number of citizens expect immediate or scheduled delivery for just about everything, such services are fast developing, which is regarded as an effective approach to solve the last mile delivery problem. By shifting the delivery vehicles from roads to the sidewalk, cities could greatly reduce traffic jams. But companies like Amazon are not developing this delivery technology simply to clear up urban traffic. Self-driving vehicles and sidewalk robots could reduce last-mile delivery costs in cities by as much as 40 percent, according to a 2018 report.
To gain public trust, these machines must demonstrate they can safely and quietly share pedestrian spaces. “It’s actually really hard to move on crowded sidewalks and not bump into people,” says Renia Ehrenfeucht, chair of the Community and Regional Planning Department at The University of New Mexico.
Sidewalk robots may also face disruptions to their own routines, including curious bystanders blocking their paths and thieves looking to grab a package on route. “I do think the largest problem is going to be malevolent(恶意的) behavior toward these things,” says Mary Cummings, director of the Humans and Autonomy Lab at Duke University. Additional challenges include perfecting the software that helps delivery robots avoid both still and moving objects as well as dealing with city officials who want to protect public spaces. For example, San Francisco, home to delivery start-ups such as DoorDash and Postmates, put a ban in 2017 on autonomous deliveries by sidewalk robots and has only slowly opened the door for companies seeking permits. Other U.S. communities have regulated where such robots can go and how they must behave.
Given these obstacles, sidewalk delivery robots are not necessarily destined to win the future. A 2016 McKinsey report pointed out old-fashioned bicycles remain the most cost-competitive choice for many last-mile deliveries. (342 words)
27. Which of the following is not a reason for companies to invest in delivery robots?
A. To ease the traffic pressure.
B. To reduce the last-mile delivery costs.
C. To gain public trust.
D. To offer citizens immediate delivery.
28. Why do city officials oppose the use of delivery robots?
A. They worry that goods on delivery robots will be grabbed.
B. They worry that the rights of pedestrians will be violated.
C. They worry that curious onlookers will block the way.
D. They think the software for delivery robots is inadequate.
29. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of delivery robots?
A. hopeful
B. pessimistic
C. doubtful
D. indifferent
30. What is the best title for the text?
A. Delivery robots—A revolutionary step
B. Delivery robots—An effective approach to traffic jams
C. Delivery robots—A sidewalk-blocking nightmare
D. Delivery robots—Rise of new technology and the challenges
Sleep is vital to your physical and mental health. On average, adults should optimally receive between seven and nine hours of sleep each night. 31 For example, some people feel best with eight continuous hours of sleep, while others do well with six to seven hours at night and daytime napping.
While you might not be able to control some factors that interfere with your sleep, you can adopt habits that encourage better sleep. Start with these simple tips.
32
Set aside no more than eight hours for sleep. The recommended amount of sleep for a healthy adult is at least seven hours. Most people don't need more than eight hours in bed to achieve this goal. Go to bed and get up at the same time every day. Try to limit the difference in your sleep schedule on weeknights and weekends to no more than one hour. 33
Pay attention to what you eat and drink
Don't go to bed hungry or stuffed. 34 Your discomfort might keep you up. Nicotine, caffeine and alcohol deserve caution, too. The stimulating effects of nicotine and caffeine take hours to wear off and can wreak havoc on quality sleep. And even though alcohol might make you feel sleepy, it can disrupt sleep later in the night.
Manage worries
Try to resolve your worries or concerns before bedtime. Note down what's on your mind and then set it aside for tomorrow. Stress management might help. 35 Meditation can also ease anxiety. In fact, nearly everyone has an occasional sleepless night—but if you often have trouble sleeping, contact your doctor. Identifying and treating any underlying causes can help you get the better sleep you deserve.
A. Stick to a sleep schedule.
B. But those needs vary individually.
C. Include physical activity in your daily routine.
D. Being consistent reinforces your body's sleep-wake cycle.
E. Start with the basics, such as getting organized, setting priorities and delegating asks.
F. It can be hard to measure your sleep patterns against those of the people around you.
G. In particular, avoid heavy or large meals within a couple of hours of bedtime.

Students who have used electronic cigarettes by the time they start ninth grade are more likely than others to start smoking traditional cigarettes and other tobacco products within the next year, according to a new study funded by the National Institutes of Health. Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, deliver nicotine to the lungs by heating a liquid solution that contains nicotine and other chemicals to produce a spray that the user takes in.
As part of a survey of substance use and mental health among high school students in Los Angeles, the study compared the start of tobacco use among 222 students who had used e-cigarettes, but not any other tobacco products, and 2,308 who had neither used e-cigarettes or any other tobacco products when initially surveyed at the start of ninth grade. The 2,530 students who initially reported never using tobacco underwent follow-up assessments after six and 12 months. Students were asked about lifetime and past six-month use of e-cigarettes or any other forms of tobacco products.
During the first six months after being surveyed, 30.7 percent of those who had used e-cigarettes started using tobacco products, such as cigarettes, and cigars, compared to only 8.1 percent of those who had never used e-cigarettes. Over the following six months leading into the start of 10th grade, 25.2 percent of e-cigarette users had used tobacco products, compared to just 9.3 percent of nonusers.
“While teen tobacco use has fallen in recent years, this study confirms that we should continue to closely watch teen smoking patterns,” said NIDA Director Nora D. Volkow, M.D. “Parents and teens should recognize that although e-cigarettes might not have the same harmful effects of regular cigarettes, they do carry a risk of addiction.”
“Recreational e-cigarette use is becoming increasingly popular among teens who have never smoked tobacco,” said Adam M. Leventhal, Ph.D., the first author on the study. “While we cannot conclude that e-cigarette use directly leads to smoking, this research raises concerns that recent increases in youth e-cigarette use could ultimately lead to the spread of smoking-related illness."

Simply put, Lockshin didn’t want Aunt Sylvia to blow her budget on lunch可以推断,Jane认为Sylvia的经济状况一般所以不让她买单。
【解析】根据第三段最后一句话but because of the selflessness and the humility behind it可知,David Garza高度赞赏Sylvia的无私和谦逊。A项Poor students will be funded by the money是事实而不是David Garza的观点;B项The gift is important because of nothing but the good can be done with it中nothing but表示仅仅,与原文不符;D项Jane Lockshin’s donation is thought highly of中主语应该换成Sylvia.
Sylvia Bloom’s story is indeed extraordinary, but it’s not as uncommon as you might think说明Sylvia的故事虽然不同寻常,但是并不是那么罕见。

The Fear of the Number 13 | Reader's Digest https://www.rd.com/culture/fear-of-number-13/
【解析】A项“Judas betrayed Juses at the Last Supper”,第三段第二句提及犹大背叛耶稣,但并不是在最后的晚餐中。C项“In many modern cultures, 12 was regarded as a perfect number”出现在第四段的第三句话,原文是“In many ancient cultures”。D项“D.Scientists proved that the number 13 was flawed.” B项“Loki’s arrival brought about chaos during the meal”出现在第三段第四、五两句话,因此正确。

W: Did you watch Football Academy last night? Only two weeks to go until the final.
M: I didn’t see it because I went to bed. I was too tired to stay up and watch it. I wish they’d repeat it like they do with so many other programs.
W: I know what you mean. I love those shows---seeing people improving ---and I get to know new things too. I love guessing who's going to be sent home each week.
M: I like being able to phone up and vote. It makes you think a lot more and you can pick up tips from the judges.

W: Hello Karl! I haven’t seen you since we both went to university.
M: Good to see you, Laura. I’m just back home for a few days.
W: Me too. How are you finding it studying in a foreign country?
M: I had to find my own accommodation, although the university was very helpful and gave me a list of apartments so it wasn’t that hard. The language isn’t a problem because my course is taught in English. But understanding the other students’ jokes isn’t easy!
W: Sounds like fun, though! Well, I’ve been in City University London for two years. I’m really
concentrating on my studies at the moment because I’ve got an important essay to write.
Have you thought about what you’ll do after your university course finishes?
M: I haven’t made up my mind actually.
W: You must feel lonely sometimes abroad.I thought I’d love the freedom of being away from
home, but it can be hard.
M: Well, it’s normal to feel like that. Why don’t you come and visit me when you can afford it?
W: I’m really curious to see what it’s like at your university. I’ve got more than enough studying to do at the moment, though, I’m afraid.

W: What’s so funny, dear?
M: Look here! A small country town in Australia decides to change its name for a month.
W: Really? Just for a month? Why?
M: For road safety. The town is called Speed, in the countryside of Victoria. Now, the people living there want to change it into Speed Kills. They hope the drivers passing the town will slow down a bit when they see the road sign.
W: That sounds like a really good idea, doesn’t it?
M: Mmm. The idea was put forward by the Victoria Transport Accident Office. It soon won over 45 people in Speed. They even made a video which has already become a hit on the Internet!
W: It’s interesting to see what will happen then.
M: A local farmer called Phil Down wants to change his name, too. He’ll be called Phil Slow Down. He wishes the idea would catch on around the world.
W: I hope it works well.

A (原创)
B (原创)

根据第二段“...is regarded as an effective approach to solve the last mile delivery problem”, “cities could greatly reduce traffic jams”,“...could reduce last-mile delivery costs in cities by as much as 40 percent”三处信息可知,A,B,D均为原因。
根据第四段第三句“Additional challenges include perfecting the software that helps delivery robots avoid both still and moving objects as well as dealing with city officials who want to protect public spaces. ”可知,官员反对配送机器人主要是为了保护公共区域,由此可推断主要原因是他们担心行人的权利会被损害。
29. C 观点态度题。
【解析】本题问的是作者对配送机器人前景所持的态度。根据第五段第一句“Given these obstacles, sidewalk delivery robots are not necessarily destined to win the future.”
Delivery robots—Rise of new technology and the challenges。

M: Can you fix a date for us to meet with Nick? I can manage the twelfth, fourteenth or fifteenth. W: Right, but Nick would be away until May the fourteenth, so it’ll have to be the following day.
M: What’s the problem?
W: Could you tell me how I can copy this document into this disk? I’ve been trying on this computer for ages but I can’t seem to do it.
M: I'm really excited about the film. The reviews say there’s even more action than in the first three. It's kind of terrifying.
W: They say it’s just as funny in parts, too. I believe we’ll have a few laughs.
W: Tim, have you seen my umbrella? The one I bought at the supermarket last week.
M: Oops, I must have left it at my office, sorry. I'll bring it home on Monday.
W: OK. I'll pick up another umbrella today.
W: Do they fit?
M: Yes, they feel fine.
W: Walk around the shop and check if they’re OK. There's a mirror over there. How do they feel?
M: OK, but perhaps the left one is a little small.
M: How many times have I told you not to take files home with you?
W: No, I didn’t, John. I left them just where you told me and…
M: But they are not here on this computer desk. Where’ve they gone? They can’t have got up and walked away.
W:Wait a minute.Sally was still here when I left. You know how she’s always tidying things away. Right, just as I thought, she put them here beside this fax machine.
