I heard laughter while I was bored on the shuttle train from main terminal to boarding gates at Atlanta airport. At the front of the first car were a man and his son.
We had just stopped to let off passengers, and the doors were closing again. “Here we go! Hold on to me tight!” the father said. The boy, about five years old, made sounds of delight.
I know we’re supposed to avoid making racial distinctions(种族歧视) these days, so I hope no one will mind if I mention that most people on the train were white, dressed for business trips or vacations.
As I got off, I remembered some thing I’d wanted to buy in the terminal. I was early for my flight, so I decided to go back. As I was about to reboard the train for my gate, I saw that the man and his son had returned too. I realized then that they hadn’t been heading for a flight, but had just been riding the shuttle.
“I want to ride some more!”
“More?” the father said, mock-exasperated(嗔怪模仿) but clearly pleased. “You’re not tired?”
“This is fun!” his son said.
“All right,” the father replied, and when a door opened we all got on.
There are parents who can afford to send their children to Europe or Disneyland, but the children turn out fallen. There are parents who live in million-dollar houses and give their children cars and swimming pools, yet something goes wrong. Rich and poor, black and white, so much goes wrong so often.
“Where are all these people going, Daddy?” the son asked.
“All over the world,” came the reply. The other people in the airport were leaving for distant destinations or arriving at the ends of their journeys. The father and son, though, were just riding this shuttle together, making it exciting, sharing each other’s company.
    21. Why did the father take his son to ride the train?
    A. To take the flight.
    B. To receive someone.
    C. To accompany and have fun.
    D. To buy something in the terminal.
    22. It can be inferred from the text that________.
    A. The father and son were black, dressed in inexpensive clothes.
    B. Every Child from rich family is not as happy as this little black boy.
    C. Parents always offer everything for their children to make them better.
    D. The shuttle is running all day long and free of charge to every passenger.
    23. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
    A. Free Shuttle for the Passengers
    B. Happy Boy with Father’s Company
    C. Rich Family without Happy Children
    D. Moved by the Funny Father and Son

    C(改编自2018年11月浙江卷概写)
It’s a really good idea to visit colleges before you apply because their websites can all start to look and sound the same. Nothing will give you the sense of what it will actually be like to live on a college campus like visiting and seeing for yourself the dorms, classrooms and athletic equipment and, of course, the students. It seems a little crazy once senior year hits to find the time to visit college campuses, and it can also be pricey if the schools you are applying to happen to be more than a car ride away. But keep in mind that you are making a decision about the next four years of your life, and do all the research you can to make sure you are making the right one.
There’s no excuses not to visit the schools in your local area. In fact, a lot of college applications even ask if you have visited campus, and obviously, if you live across the country that won’t be as much of a possibility, but if you live nearby, to check it out!
If campus visits aren’t going to happen before you apply, at the very least you should find some time between applying and getting your acceptance letters to visit the schools you’d like to attend. It can save you a lot of heartache if you rule out now the things that you don’t like about certain campuses, things that you wouldn’t know unless you actually visit.
Now, if time and money are making it impossible, then check out the online college fairs at College Week Live. It’s a chance to chat online with admissions officers, students, and college counselors(顾问), and it won’t cost you a penny! You can register for its online college fair at collegeweeklive.com. While visiting an online college fair can’t take the place of an actual campus visit, it can be a very useful tool that along with all your other research will help you make an informed decision about which colleges or universities you’d like to attend.
    27. What’s the topic of the passage?
    A. The necessity of visiting the colleges you like in advance.
    B. The possibility of visiting the colleges you like in advance.
    C. The ways of visiting the colleges you like in advance.
    D. The introduction about how to visit colleges you like in advance.
    28. Why do the students need to visit the colleges ahead of being admitted to?
    A. To be familiar with the college. B. To know the route to college.
    C. To help make a right decision. D. To avoid meeting heartache.
    29. What is the last choice of visiting college in advance?
    A. Counseling officers. B. Visiting on one’s own.
    C. Visiting online. D. Calling the counselors
30.What is the purpose of the passage?
    A. To help students to know more about the colleges in advance.
    B. To encourage students to know more about the colleges in advance.
    C. To inspire students to study much harder before going colleges.
    D. To guide students to choose a correct college by themselves.

Make sure your estate(财产) plan keeps up with life changes(原创)
Few things are as important as estate planning. If you don’t handle your business while you’re alive, the ramifications(影响) can run deep and wide long after you’re gone.
Estate planning may seem discouraging because it deals with issues of aging. Or maybe you think estate planning is only something folks like Bill Gates do. It’s for everybody. 31 Here’s how.
What’s an estate plan? Think of estate planning as a set of legal documents that spell out who gets your possession when you die, who you want to make medical decisions, who should make financial decisions on your behalf, and more. 32
This is not a one-shot deal. It’s great that you finally got your will done, have your medical directives in place, and gave someone power of attorney. 33 Life is changing. Your documents should keep pace with change.
“Remember to update beneficiaries on life insurance policies after the first spouse(配偶) dies,” says Martin Levine, chief financial officer for 4Thought Financial Group in Syosset. 34
Get help. This is one time when DIY probably isn’t a good idea. Talk to a financial adviser, preferably one with expertise in estate planning.
35  Don’t assume that establishing joint tenancy (sharing ownership in personal property, such as a home) or joint ownership over financial accounts is enough to protect your assets.
    A .Make no assumptions.
    B. But, you’re hardly finished.
C .Decide to do it, and to avoid unexpected consequences.
    D. It is difficult to choose a right heir before your death unless they are your closest ones.
    E. Ideally, it will make things easier for your heirs(后继人) at a time when they most need it.
    F. Finding a reliable agency to deal with your possessions is a wise choice when planning estate.
    G. The birth of a child and divorce are other life events that will require updating estate planning documents.

Students who have used electronic cigarettes by the time they start ninth grade are more likely than others to start smoking traditional cigarettes and other combustible(易燃的) tobacco products , according to a new study funded by the National Institutes of Health.
Data was collected in a survey of substance use and mental health among high school students in Los Angeles. The study surveyed students from 10 public high schools. The analysis focused on 2,530 students who initially reported never using combustible tobacco and experienced follow-up assessments after six and 12 months. Students were asked about lifetime and past six-month use of e-cigarettes, combustible cigarettes, and other cigarettes related products.
The study compared tobacco use initiation(启蒙) among 222 students who had used e-cigarettes, but not combustible tobacco products, and 2,308 who had neither used e-cigarettes or combustible tobacco products at the start of ninth grade. During the first six months after being surveyed, 30.7 percent of those who had used e-cigarettes started using combustible tobacco products, such as cigarettes, and cigars, compared to only 8.1 percent of those who had never used e-cigarettes. Over the following six months leading into the start of 10th grade, 25.2 percent of e-cigarette users had used combustible tobacco products, compared to just 9.3 percent of nonusers.
“While teen tobacco use has fallen in recent years, this study confirms that we should continue to cautiously watch teen smoking patterns,” said NIDA Director Nora D. Volkow, M.D. “Parents and teens should recognize that although e-cigarettes might not have the same carcinogenic(致癌的) effects of regular cigarettes, they do carry a risk of addiction.”
“E-cigarette use in entertainment is becoming increasingly popular among teens who have never smoked tobacco. Teens who enjoy the experience of inhaling(吸入) nicotine via e-cigarettes could be more exciting to experiment with other nicotine products, including smokeable tobacco,” said Adam M. Leventhal, Ph.D., the first author on the study. “While we cannot conclude that e-cigarette use directly leads to smoking, this research raises concerns that recent increases in youth e-cigarette use could finally develop the tendency of smoking-related illness."

    W: Excuse me, Mr. Smith.
M: What’s the matter? I don’t want to be disturbed while I’m talking to Mr. Black.
W: But you have a meeting scheduled with the engineer.
M: Call him, please, and put off our meeting.
    (Text 2)
W: I’m hungry. Do you have any cookies? I ate my last one this morning.
M: No. But there are some nuts in the living room.
    (Text 3)
M: So many magazines on my desk. Who did this?
W: Maybe it was Justin. He said you were going to refer to them to finish your design.
M: Oh, that’s right. I did ask him to bring the latest magazines to me. I completely forgot.
    (Text 4)
W: When on earth did you get home last night? 11:30 or 12 o’clock?
M: Not really, my watch told me it was only 11:20 when I opened the door.
    (Text 5)
M: What have you got there?
W: It’s my sun lamp. I’m taking it down to the electrical repair shop to be fixed. There’s something wrong with the wiring.
    (Text 6)
M: How did you do on the exam, Nancy?
W: I passed, but I didn’t do so well. The essay question was the worst part for me. How about you?
M: I did all right on everything except for the essay question, too. ⑦I wasn’t really prepared to write about Arthur Miller’s plays. We study his plays for only a few days. I didn’t think it would be on the test.
W: Me, either. I thought Mr. Green would ask us something about Mark Twain’s novels or maybe Walt Whitman’s poems. I studied most of the material on these two writers and didn’t spend much time on Arthur Miller’s plays.
    (Text 7)
W: ⑧I’m calling to confirm my flight to New York this Saturday. My name is Jane Austin, and my flight number is K701.
M: Yes, Ms Austin. Your name is here in our computer. Your plane takes off at 9:00 am. And I’d like to remind you to please come to the airport two hours before your take-off time to get your seating arrangements.
W: Thank you. By the way, could you tell me once again how long my flight will be?
M: ⑨The total number of hours is 16 hours because you have a two-hour stopover at Los Angeles Airport.
    (Text 8)
W: Could you check my tires, sir? I think they need air.
M: No problem, madam. Well, they are just all right. Should I check the air in the spare tire as well?
    W: I don’t think so. It’s brand new.
M: Should I clean the windshield(挡风玻璃) for you?
W: Yes, please. I also want you to check the radiator(散热器).
M: All right, madam. (11)Gosh, there is hardly any water in the radiator. That’s dangerous, madam. You could break down because of the heat, you know.
W: Please fill it up with water then.
    M: OK, madam.
W: (12) Do you take credit cards or checks?
M: (12) Sorry, we don’t. It’s ten dollars in total.
    W: OK. Here you are.
M: Thank you. Have a nice drive.
    (Text 9)
M: So you studied art at college?
W: Right. (13)But I gave up my job as a painter when my daughter was born. I thought about teaching art classes part-time, but instead I started making dolls for my daughter. I love acting, so I often invented plays for the dolls. I once used the dolls to give a show at my daughter’s party. The children loved it. As a result, other parents asked me to do the show at their children’s parties.
M: It must be a lot of work for you.
W: Yes. I love making the dolls, but I decided that I needed someone to help me with the shows. Luckily my neighbor Lena was willing to perform with me. Her husband recorded the music to go with the shows. It would be impossible to do everything on my own.
M: Have you ever had any problems?
W: Only once. (14)I wrote a story about a lion. The children were afraid of the lion and cried. I was worried the parents might complain, but in fact they laughed about it. After that, (15) whenever I’ve invented a new story, I show it to my daughter. She always tells me exactly what she thinks of it.
M: And the shows continue to be successful?
W: Yes, I have a wide range of different shows. They become so successful that I could do one every day, but I don’t want to do that. (16)The reason the shows have become popular is that I love every minute of every show, and so other people love them too.
    (Text 10)
M: Do you want to spend a holiday in space? Dennis Tito has become the world’s first “space tourist”. (17)He went on a 10-day visit to the International Space Station. He paid 14 million pounds for his journey. A year later, Martin wanted to do the same. He was only 22 years old and probably very rich too. He is still waiting for his holiday of a lifetime.
Many people believe that this is only the start of something new. We made interviews among teenagers from around the world and the following is what they said about space travel.
“It’s a great idea. I hope space travel will be common in about 50 years’ time. I’d really love to do it,” (18) Kate from Australia said.
    (19) “I would like to see our beautiful earth from space. There are lots of secrets to explore in space and I would go into space if I could,” Ben from China said.
“I think space travel is really bad for the environment. We should look after our own planet first,” Richard from Canada said.
“It must be very boring and dangerous to sit in that small space shuttle. I’d rather take a plane and go to another place on earth,” Lisa from the UK said.
So, as you can see, many of our teenagers had different opinions. Whether you like it or not, space travel is going to become an important thing in the future. (20)We are looking forward to hearing your opinions.
21.选C 。细节题,根据第一段“Not many people consider them fun, but on this Saturday I heard laughter. At the front of the first car – looking out the window at the track that lay ahead – were a man and his son.”和最后一段“ The father and son, though, were just riding this shuttle together, making it exciting, sharing each other’s company.”
22.选A 。推断题,根据第二段“I know we’re supposed to avoid making racial distinctions(种族歧视) these days, so I hope no one will mind if I mention that most people on the train were white, dressed for business trips or vacations.”

24.选C。细节题,根据第一段“The former Los Angeles Lakers star won an Oscar in the animated short category for “Dear Basketball,” a poem he wrote after ending his 20-year career on the court in 2016.”
25.选A 。词义猜测题,根据第二段“…includes five NBA championships with the Lakers, two Olympic gold medals, NBA Finals most valuable player awards, a league MVP award and four All-Star game MVP awards.”

    31.选C 。“Here’s how.”
    35.选A。

    37.选A 。
    39.选A。
    41.选A。
    47.选A。
    52.选A。
    56. was praised。
    57.turning。
    58.Based。 用be based on表示,此处作状语,故只要保留based。
    59.who 。
    60.facial。
    61.years。
    62.his 。
    63.unexpectedly 。
    64.around 。
    65.friendship。Auggie
