B
A Simple Invention That Saved Lives
In 1903, a Norwegian engineer named Johan Vaaler invented the paper clip. It was a simple piece of bent wire, but it solved a common problem — how to hold papers together without damaging them.
However, the paper clip was not an instant success. Many people did not see its value at first. It took several years for the design to be improved and for the paper clip to become widely used. Today, it is one of the most common office supplies in the world.
During World War II, the paper clip became a symbol of resistance in Norway. People wore them on their clothes to show their unity against the Nazi occupation. The simple paper clip represented their hope and courage.
This story shows that great inventions don’t have to be complicated. Sometimes, the simplest ideas can have the greatest impact. The paper clip is a reminder that even the most ordinary objects can carry extraordinary meaning.
19. Who invented the paper clip?A. An American engineer. B. A Norwegian engineer. C. A German scientist. D. A British inventor.
20. Why did the paper clip become a symbol during World War II?A. It was used to hold important documents. B. It represented resistance and hope in Norway. C. It was a new invention at that time. D. It was used by soldiers.
21. What does the writer say about great inventions?A. They must be complicated. B. They often start as failures. C. They don’t have to be complicated. D. They always make money.
22. What is the main idea of this passage?A. The paper clip was invented in Norway. B. Simple inventions can have a big impact. C. Office supplies are important. D. The paper clip is a symbol of Norway.
C
The Story of Post-it Notes
Some of the best inventions are created by accident. The Post-it Note is a perfect example. In 1968, Spencer Silver, a scientist at 3M, was trying to develop a super-strong adhesive. Instead, he created a weak adhesive that could stick to surfaces but could be easily removed.
For several years, no one knew what to do with this “failed” invention. Then, another 3M employee, Art Fry, had a problem. He used small pieces of paper to mark pages in his hymn book, but they kept falling out. He remembered Silver’s weak adhesive and thought it could be used to hold the paper in place. And so, the Post-it Note was born.
The product was launched in 1980 and became an instant success. Today, Post-it Notes are used in offices, schools, and homes around the world. They are a simple but brilliant solution to a common problem — the need to leave a temporary note without damaging the surface.
This story reminds us that failure can lead to success. The “failed” adhesive turned out to be a million-dollar idea. It also shows that sometimes, the best ideas come from looking at a problem from a different angle.
23. What was Spencer Silver trying to invent?A. A weak adhesive. B. A super-strong adhesive. C. A new type of paper. D. A sticky note.
24. Who came up with the idea to use the weak adhesive for notes?A. Spencer Silver. B. Art Fry. C. Thomas Edison. D. Johan Vaaler.
25. When were Post-it Notes launched?A. In 1968. B. In 1970. C. In 1980. D. In 1990.
26. What lesson can we learn from this story?A. Failure always leads to success. B. Great ideas can come from unexpected places. C. Only scientists can invent things. D. Inventions are always planned.
D
① In recent years, 3D printing has become one of the most exciting technological developments. It allows us to create physical objects from digital designs by adding layers of material, such as plastic or metal.
② The possibilities of 3D printing are vast. In medicine, doctors are using 3D printing to create customized prosthetics, dental implants, and even human tissue. In construction, 3D printers can build houses in a fraction of the time it takes traditional methods. In the food industry, chefs are experimenting with 3D-printed chocolate and pasta.
③ However, 3D printing also raises concerns. One issue is the potential for 3D-printed weapons. Another is the impact on traditional manufacturing jobs. If products can be printed at home, factories may become obsolete. There are also environmental concerns — the materials used in 3D printing are not always recyclable.
④ Despite these challenges, experts believe that 3D printing will continue to grow. The key is to regulate its use and develop sustainable materials. With careful management, 3D printing could revolutionize the way we make and consume things.
27. What is 3D printing?A. A way to design digital images. B. A way to create physical objects from digital designs. C. A way to print on paper. D. A way to build robots.
28. In which field is 3D printing used according to the passage?A. Medicine. B. Education. C. Transportation. D. Agriculture.
29. What is one concern about 3D printing?A. It is too expensive. B. It could be used to make weapons. C. It is too slow. D. It is difficult to learn.
30. What is the best structure of the text?A. ①—②③—④ B. ①②—③—④ C. ①—②—③④ D. ①②③—④

第三节
Text 8 (11-15)Good morning, class. Today I want to talk about inventions. As a science teacher, I have always been fascinated by how inventions have changed our lives. In my opinion, the electric light is one of the most important inventions. Before it, people had to rely on candles or gas lamps. They couldn’t work or read at night. The electric light allowed people to be active after dark. But a great invention doesn’t have to be complex. It just needs to solve a problem. I encourage all of you to think like inventors. Look around you. What problems do you see? You might be the one to solve them.
