My Favourite Memory
My grandfather is the person I love most in the world. He is 75 years old, but he still has a sharp memory. He often tells me stories about his childhood. He grew up in a small village and had to walk three miles to school every day. He said that his best memory was the first time he saw a bicycle. He was eight years old, and a travelling merchant rode into the village on a shiny black bicycle. All the children ran after him. My grandfather remembered every detail — the sound of the bell, the sunlight on the metal, and the excitement he felt. — Li Ming
My favourite memory is from my 10th birthday. My parents took me to a zoo. I had never been to a zoo before. I saw elephants, giraffes, and monkeys. The best part was feeding the giraffes. They were so gentle and tall! I still have the photo of me feeding a giraffe. It makes me smile every time I look at it. — Chen Wei
One memory I will never forget is the day my sister was born. I was seven years old. My father took me to the hospital. When I first saw her, she was so tiny and pink. I held her finger, and she grabbed my hand. I felt so protective of her. Now she is ten, and we are best friends. — Zhang Jie
16. How did Li Ming’s grandfather get to school when he was young?A. By bicycle. B. By bus. C. On foot. D. By car.
17. What did Chen Wei do on her 10th birthday?A. She went to a zoo. B. She had a party. C. She got a bicycle. D. She visited her grandparents.
18. What did Zhang Jie feel when she first saw her sister?A. Jealous. B. Protective. C. Angry. D. Indifferent.
B
The Memory of Food
Food is not just about nutrition. It is also about memories. The smell of a dish can bring back moments from years ago. For many people, certain foods are connected to happy memories of family, celebrations, and home.
For me, the smell of dumplings always reminds me of my grandmother’s kitchen. Every Chinese New Year, my whole family would gather at her house. She would spend the whole day making dumplings. Her hands moved quickly as she rolled the dough and filled each one with meat and vegetables. I would sit beside her and try to help, though my dumplings never looked as good as hers. She would always say, “Practice makes perfect.”
Another food that brings back memories is fish. My father used to take me fishing when I was a child. We would wake up early on Saturday mornings and go to the lake. It was our special time together. We would talk about everything — school, friends, and dreams. After we caught some fish, we would go home and cook them for dinner. Those were some of the happiest times of my life.
Food memories are powerful because they are connected to people and moments. They remind us of who we are and where we come from. Sometimes, a single bite can take you back in time.
19. What does the smell of dumplings remind the writer of?A. His school days. B. His grandmother’s kitchen. C. A trip to the beach. D. His father’s birthday.
20. When did the writer go fishing with his father?A. On Sundays. B. On Saturdays. C. During holidays. D. On weekdays.
21. What did the writer and his father talk about while fishing?A. Work and money. B. School, friends, and dreams. C. Politics and news. D. Travel and hobbies.
22. What does the writer think of food memories?A. They are powerful and meaningful. B. They are not important. C. They only remind people of food. D. They are difficult to remember.
C
How Does Memory Work?
Memory is one of the most amazing abilities of the human brain. It allows us to remember experiences, learn new things, and build our identities. But have you ever wondered how memory actually works?
Scientists divide memory into three stages: sensory memory, short-term memory, and long-term memory. Sensory memory lasts for only a few seconds. It is what you see, hear, or feel in the moment. Short-term memory can hold information for about 20 to 30 seconds. It is limited — you can usually remember only about seven items at a time. Long-term memory, however, can store unlimited information for years or even a lifetime.
To move information from short-term memory to long-term memory, it needs to be “encoded”. This can happen through repetition, association, or emotion. For example, if you repeat a phone number several times, you are more likely to remember it. If you connect new information to something you already know, it becomes easier to remember. Emotion also plays a big role — we often remember events that made us feel happy, sad, or scared.
Memory is not perfect. We often forget things, especially over time. But forgetting is also a natural part of how memory works. The brain discards information it thinks is not important so that it can focus on what matters.
23. How long does short-term memory usually last?A. A few seconds. B. 20 to 30 seconds. C. Several minutes. D. Several hours.
24. How many items can people usually remember in short-term memory?A. About three. B. About five. C. About seven. D. About ten.
25. What helps move information to long-term memory?A. Ignoring it. B. Repetition, association, and emotion. C. Forgetting it. D. Only by studying hard.
26. Why does forgetting happen according to the passage?A. Because the brain is too small. B. Because the brain discards unimportant information. C. Because people don’t try hard enough. D. Because memory is always limited.
D
① Many of us have a box of old things — letters, photos, toys, and tickets — that we keep in our closet or under our bed. These objects are more than just things. They are “memory keepers”. They help us remember important moments in our lives.
② Why do we keep these objects? Psychologists say that physical objects help us connect with our past in a way that memories alone cannot. When we hold an old photo or a ticket stub, we can recall not just the event, but also the feelings we had at that time. This is called “reminiscence therapy”, and it can even help people with memory loss.
③ However, not everyone keeps physical objects. Some people prefer to take photos and store them digitally. Digital memory keeping has its advantages — you can store thousands of photos on your phone and share them easily. But there is also something special about holding a real object in your hand.
④ The most important thing is not how you keep your memories, but that you take time to remember. In our busy lives, we often forget to look back. But our memories are what make us who we are. So, take a moment to open that old box. You might be surprised by what you find.
27. What does the term “memory keepers” mean?A. People who have good memories. B. Objects that help us remember. C. Photographs of important events. D. Digital storage devices.
28. What is one advantage of digital memory keeping?A. It is more emotional. B. It can store many photos and share easily. C. It is better for memory loss. D. It is cheaper.
29. What does the writer suggest in the last paragraph?A. Throw away old things. B. Take time to remember the past. C. Only keep digital photos. D. Focus only on the present.
30. What is the best structure of the text?A. ①—②③—④ B. ①②—③—④ C. ①—②—③④ D. ①②③—④
