Using nly ten symbls (0-9), we can write any number, small r large. But why d we use these ten symbls? And why is there 10 f them? Strange as it seems t us nw, there was a time when numbers, as we knw them, simply weren’t used. S, have yu ever wndered hw numbers first came abut? Let’s learn abut a brief histry f numbers.
Early humans in the Old Stne Age likely cunted animals and ther bjects by carving tally marks (记数符号) n walls, bnes r stne. Each tally mark std fr 1 and each fifth mark was scred thrugh t help keep track. This system was nly fine fr small numbers, but it didn’t really wrk with large numbers. As the sciety develped, peple came up with different ways f writing dwn numbers. They created new symbls fr each larger number. But many f these systems in different cuntries were mainly based n tally marks and it was still difficult t write large numbers.
By the seventh century, Indians had perfected the decimal psitinal (位值的) system, which culd describe any number with nly ten unique (唯一) symbls. A key breakthrugh f this system was the number 0. Older systems, which didn’t have 0, wuld leave a blank in its place, making it hard t distinguish (区分) between 63 and 603, r 12 and 120. Having and using 0 helped make writing dwn numbers clearer and easier fr everyne t understand.
But why were the numbers knwn as “Arabic” (阿拉伯数字) since they were brn in India? Here’s an interesting stry. Smetime in the year 771, Arab businessmen tk sme Indian schlars (学者) t Baghdad t help teach them the new set f numbers. After learning the numbers, the Arabs translated them int their wn writing system that is Arabic. Smetime later, the Arab traders spread these numerals int Eurpe. As the wrld gt these numbers frm Arabia, these came t be knwn as Arabic numerals.
