An old saying tells us, “When swallows fly low, rain is coming.” This might sound like a simple story, but scientists have found that birds’ actions can truly help us understand the weather and seasons. For thousands of years, people around the world have watched birds to know when seasons change.
Today, scientists use tools to study birds’ seasonal travel. But even without modern technology, nature still gives us important hints. Here are some interesting things birds do that tell us about the weather:
Singing More: If birds sing loudly in the morning, it usually means the day will be sunny and warm. When there is no wind, their songs sound clearer.
Flying Together: When birds gather in large groups, it often means a storm is near. This is because birds can feel changes in the air pressure before bad weather comes. Then they will gather together to keep warm and search for food.
Building Nests(巢穴) High: Birds that build nests high in trees might be preparing for heavy rain. They choose safe places to protect their eggs from floods.
Birds act in these ways for two main reasons. First, weather changes influence their food. For example, insects fly lower before a storm, so birds fly down to catch them. Second, birds can feel small changes in the air pressure. When the air pressure drops(a sign of rain), some birds become restless. If you see birds suddenly hiding in trees, it’s time to take an umbrella!
Now, warmer winters are changing some birds’ habits. Some birds start their seasonal travel earlier or stay closer to home. By studying these changes, scientists learn not only about birds but also how to protect our environment.

28.What may happen when birds gather in large groups?
A.There will be a storm soon. B.They will look for some food.
C.They will fly to warm places. D.It will be sunny and warm today.
29.Why does the writer end the passage by talking about warmer winters?
A.To talk about winter weather.
B.To tell readers how to face warmer winters.
C.To suggest the best season for bird watching.
D.To connect bird habits with environmental worries.
