“The key difference between running and walking is hw many calries yu are burning—nt per mile, but per minute f exercise,” says Paul D. In a recent study that analyzed data frm nearly 50,000 peple, researchers fund that runners’ risk f heart disease was 4.5 percent lwer than that f thse wh were inactive. But walkers wh burned the same amunt f calries daily had a risk level that was 9 percent lwer than thse wh were inactive.
“Running gets the reputatin(名声) fr causing injuries because many peple wh are just starting t run try t d t much t quickly,” says Carl Ewing Garber, a prfessr at Clumbia University. “And they ften get injured as a result. If yu want t prgress frm walking t running, d it slwly, gradually increasing yur speed, distance and the frequency f yur runs.
