    I went t Clby Cllege in Maine. I had visited the schl ahead f time, s I knew what I was getting myself int. I knew abut the difference in weather. I understd the difference in scial atmsphere. But I wanted t stretch myself and get ut f my cmfrt zne. And yu knw what? I abslutely lved my time there. But ne thing tk me by surprise—the lack f cuntryside representatin. Mst f the ther students at Clby were frm big cities: New Yrk, Bstn, Ls Angeles, San Francisc... And when I had cnversatins with these students—in r utside f class—we almst always fcused n tpics facing large American cities. In my educatin classes, it was always “urban this” and “urban that”.
    It was like small twn America didn't exist.
    And this urban interest desn't just happen in cllege. I went t an educatin cnference a cuple f years ag, and a prfessr—smene wh had been at the frefrnt f educatinal refrm—was there t deliver a keynte. I was chsen t be part f a small grup that gt t meet with him. S there we were, five r six f us sitting in a rm, and I asked him, “What are yur thughts n the state f educatin in the cuntryside?” And this man was speechless.
    I'll never frget that mment. It speaks t a larger truth. Twns like mine are frgtten.
    This trend f exprting talent and resurces t ur big cities—this mindset f leaving small twns and never cming back—I dn't want t add t that mvement. I want t reverse that mvement.
