Arthur Miller(1915—2005) is universally recognised as one of the greatest dramatists of the 20th century. Miller’s father had moved to the USA from Austria-Hungary, drawn like so many others by the “Great American Dream”. However, he experienced severe financial hardship when his family business was ruined in the Great Depression of the early 1930s.
Miller’s most famous play, Death of a Salesman, is a powerful attack on the American system, with its aggressive way of doing business and its insistence on money and social status as indicators of worth. In Willy Loman, the hero of the play, we see a man who has got into trouble with this system. Willy is “burnt out” and in the cruel world of business there is no room for sentiment: if he can’t do the work, then he is no good to his employer, the Wagner Company, and he must go. Willy is painfully aware of this, and at a loss as to what to do with his lack of success. He refuses to face the fact that he has failed and kills himself in the end.
When it was first staged in 1949, the play was greeted with enthusiastic reviews, and it won the Tony Award for Best Play, the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award, and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It was the first play to win all three of these major awards.
Miller died of heart failure at his home in Roxbury, Connecticut, on the evening of February 10, 2005, the 56th anniversary of the first performance of Death of a Salesman on Broadway.
24. Why did Arthur Miller’s father move to the USA?

B. He was attracted by the “Great American Dream”.

D. His family business failed.

As we age, even if we’re healthy, the heart just isn’t as efficient in processing oxygen as it used to be. In most people the first signs show up in their 50s or early 60s. And among people who don’t exercise, the changes can start even sooner.
“Think of a rubber band. In the beginning, it is flexible, but put it in a drawer for 20 years and it will become dry and easily broken,” says Dr. Ben Levine, a heart specialist at the University of Texas. That’s what happens to the heart. Fortunately for those in midlife, Levine is finding that even if you haven’t been an enthusiastic exerciser, getting in shape now may help improve your aging heart.
Levine and his research team selected volunteers aged between 45 and 64 who did not exercise much but were otherwise healthy. Participants were randomly divided into two groups. The first group participated in a programme of nonaerobic(无氧) exercise—balance training and weight training—three times a week. The second group did high-intensity aerobic exercise under the guidance of a trainer for four or more days a week. After two years, the second group saw remarkable improvements in heart health.
“We took these 50-year-old hearts and turned the clock back to 30-or 35-year-old hearts,” says Levine. “And the reason they got so much stronger and fitter was that their hearts could now fill a lot better and pump(泵送) a lot more blood during exercise.” But the hearts of those who participated in less intense exercise didn’t change, he says.
“The sweet spot in life to start exercising, if you haven’t already, is in late middle age when the heart still has flexibility,” Levine says. “We put healthy 70-year-olds through a yearlong exercise training programme, and nothing happened to them at all.”
Dr. Nieca Goldberg, a spokeswoman for the American Heart Association, says Levine’s findings are a great start. But the study was small and needs to be repeated with far larger groups of people to determine exactly which aspects of an exercise routine make the biggest difference.
28. What does Levine want to explain by mentioning the rubber band?
A. The right way of exercising.
B. The causes of a heart attack.
C. The difficulty of keeping fit.
D. The aging process of the heart.
根据第二段中的“’Think of a rubber band. In the beginning,it is flexible, but put it in a drawer for 20 years and it will become dry and easily broken,’ says Dr. Ben Levine,a heart specialist at the University of Texas. That’s what happens to the heart.”
29. In which aspect were the two groups different in terms of research design?
A. Diet plan.
B. Professional background.
C. Exercise type.
D. Previous physical condition.
根据第三段中的“The first group participated in a programme of nonaerobic exercise—balance training and weight training—three times a week. The second group did high-intensity aerobic exercise under the guidance of a trainer for four or more days a week.”
30. What does Levine’s research find?
A. Middle-aged hearts get younger with aerobic exercise.
B. High-intensity exercise is more suitable for the young.
C. It is never too late for people to start taking exercise.
D. The more exercise we do, the stronger our hearts get.
根据第三段的中“The second group did high-intensity aerobic exercise under the guidance of a trainer for four or more days a week. After two years, the second group saw remarkable improvements in heart health.” 故选A。
答案:A
31. What does Dr. Nieca Goldberg suggest?
A. Making use of the findings.
B. Interviewing the study participants.
C. Conducting further research.
D. Clarifying the purpose of the study.
根据最后一段中的“But the study was small and needs to be repeated with far larger groups of people to determine exactly which aspects of an exercise routine make the biggest difference.”
D
I lost my sight when I was four years old by falling off a box car and landing on my head. Now I am twenty-two. I can vaguely(模糊地) remember the brightness of sunshine and what red colour is. It would be wonderful to see again, but a calamity(灾难) can do strange things to people.
It occurred to me the other day that I might not have come to love life as I do if I hadn’t been blind. I believe in life now. I am not so sure that I would have believed in it so deeply, otherwise. I don’t mean that I would prefer to go without my eyes. I simply mean that the loss of them made me appreciate more of what I have now.
Life, I believe, asks a continuous series of adjustments to reality. The more readily a person is able to make these adjustments, the more meaningful his own private world becomes. The adjustment is never easy, but I was lucky. My parents and my teachers saw something in me—a potential to live—which I didn’t see, and they made me want to fight it out with blindness.
The hardest lesson I had to learn was to believe in myself. That was basic. If I hadn’t been able to do that, I would have collapsed(倒塌) and become a chair rocker on the front porch for the rest of my life. When I say belief in myself I am not talking about simply the kind of self-confidence that helps me down an unfamiliar staircase alone. That is part of it. But I mean something bigger than that: an assurance that I am, despite imperfections, a real, positive person; that somewhere in the sweeping, complicated pattern of people there is a special place where I can make myself fit.
It took me years to discover and strengthen this assurance. It had to start with the most elementary things. I had to learn my limitations. It was no good trying for something I knew at the start was wildly out of reach because that only invited the bitterness of failure. I would fail sometimes anyway but on the average I made progress.
32. From the first two paragraphs, which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. The writer lost his sight in an accident when he was a little kid.
B. The writer appreciates what he owns very much.
C. The writer thought he would love his life more if he hadn’t been blind.
D. The writer thought it would be wonderful to see again.
根据第二段第一句“It occurred to me the other day that I might not have come to love life as I do if I hadn’t been blind.”
33. Why did the author say he was lucky in the third paragraph?
A. He had a potential to live.
B. He made good adjustments.
C. His parents and teachers helped him a lot.
D. He could fight to live with his blindness.
根据第三段最后一句“My parents and my teachers saw something in me—a potential to live—which I didn’t see, and they made me want to fight it out with blindness.”
34. What’s the most difficult thing for the author?
A. To start with elementary things.
B. To have faith in himself.
C. To fight with blindness.
D. To make adjustments to reality.
根据第四段第一句“The hardest lesson I had to learn was to believe in myself.”
35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. A Miserable Life
B. Struggle Against Difficulties
C. A Disaster Makes a Strong Person
D. An Unforgettable Experience

China has been the birthplace of many of the world’s greatest inventions. It was, for example, the first country to produce paper money. Before the invention of paper money and coins, people used many different kinds of things for buying and selling. 36. This exchange of goods and services for other goods and services is called bartering.
37. In 1200 BCE, people in China began to use shells(贝壳) as money. Usually the shells used as money were very small. This made it easier for people to carry money over long distances, and allowed for trade to develop between different parts of the country.
In the years which followed this invention, many other countries around the world began to do the same. 38. The next development was in 1000 BCE, when China started making bronze and copper shells. It wasn’t long before the Chinese made round coins out of metal. 39. By 500 BCE, metal coins had begun to appear in countries like Persia and Greece, and later in the Roman Empire.
About 1,000 years later, leather was used as money in China, and in 806 AD, the first paper banknotes were produced by the Chinese people. 40.

I am a mother of three and have recently completed my college degree.
The last class I had to take was Sociology(社会学). The teacher was absolutely inspiring with the qualities that I wish every human had been given. Her last project of the term was called “Smile”. The class was asked to go out and smile at three people and record their reactions.
I am a very friendly person and always smile at everyone and say hello anyway, so, I thought this would be a piece of cake. Soon after we were given the project, my husband, my youngest son and I went out to a restaurant one cold March morning. It was just our way of sharing special playtime with our son. We were standing in line, waiting to be served, when all of a sudden everyone around us began to back away, and then even my husband did.
I did not move a bit. A strong feeling of fear welled up(涌上) inside of me as I turned to see why they had moved. As I turned around I smelled a terrible “dirty body” smell, and there standing behind me were two poor homeless men. As I looked down at the short gentleman, close to me, he was “smiling”. His beautiful sky blue eyes were full of hope as he searched for acceptance.
He said, “Good day.” as he counted the few coins he had been holding. The second man was obviously mentally disabled. I held my tears as I stood there with them.
The young lady at the counter asked him what they wanted. He said, “Coffee is all, Miss” because that was all they could afford (If they wanted to sit in the restaurant and warm up, they had to buy something. He just wanted to be warm.)
Then I really felt the desire was so great that I almost reached out and hugged the little man with the blue eyes.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
That was when I noticed all eyes in the restaurant were set on me, judging my every action.
I turned in “my project” and the instructor read it.
答案:
That was when I noticed all eyes in the restaurant were set on me, judging my every action. I smiled and asked the waitress to give me two more breakfasts on a separate plate. I put the plate on the table and the blue-eyed gentleman looked up at me tearfully in his eyes. I started to cry as I walked away. When I sat down, my husband smiled at me. We held hands firmly. I returned to college, on the last evening of class, with this story in hand.
