Farmer Pak Sadiman has made it his task to raise awareness and do something about Central Java’s water shortage problem, little by little.
He has changed his dry village into a groundwater haven by planting trees on nearby land for the last 19 years, and he’s encouraging others to join in, too.
Sadiman realised that the land was in need of some water when the Gendol River—previously the source of water for villagers—was quickly drying up. Even rubber trees, the local people’s main source of income, were so dry that they could no longer produce rubber later. It was then that Sadiman took action so that generations to come could benefit from the planted trees.
“Banyan trees, unlike rubber trees, can keep groundwater. The more banyan trees are planted, the more clean water villagers will get,” he thought. Although he would often find his seeds dug up by cattle, the farmer never became discouraged from achieving his goal—providing his village with a clean water source.
He’s planted at least 11,000 trees over the last 19 years, and his village seems to have escaped from the dry season. Villagers have joined in Sadiman’s efforts and given him free seeds or worked alongside him to plant the trees. “Pak Sadiman is our hero. This village used to fight with water shortage, but now we have enough water because of him,” the local chief said.
Sadiman said as long as he’s physically healthy and fit, he’ll continue to plant trees and finish his vision of avoiding drought and help provide clean water for his fellow villagers.

John was part of my childhood growing up in the 1970s and a link to sunny, fun-filled days spent on the beach at Bangor in Northern Ireland where we went for our summer holidays. To many, he was a mystery. Every afternoon John would wander to the end of the pier(码头) where he fed the seagulls and delighted in the sound of their excited cries as they flew around his head.
Often I asked my family questions regarding John. Eventually I gave up as no one could tell me anything about him. As I grew up, my visits to the beach became less frequent, and my memories of John buried in a child’s imagination.
Last year memories came flooding back as I walked along the coastline, where I noticed a lady feeding the seagulls on the pier, and I decided to introduce myself. Then I came to know that the lady was John’s daughter, and after John left this world she carried out the ritual, which had held such importance for her father.
In some strange way I felt we shared a bond, each needing to remember. In return, Lucy told me of John’s life, his days in the British Navy during World War Ⅰ and how he almost lost hope when his ship was attacked by a German U-boat in the North Sea and he found himself in a lifeboat with five others.
Close to death, he thought he heard the sound of wings. He put up his hands, only to catch a seagull that had landed on the side of the boat. The seagull saved the lives of the six men as it was used to catch fish, which kept them alive until they reached land. This period of John’s life was one he never talked about. But the ritual he first performed as a young man remained a part of him until he died.
Now I visit Lucy as often as I can, just to chat or very often walk along the beach to the pier end. We enjoy the comfortable silence, each lost in special memories.
28. Seeing John feeding the seagulls, how might the author feel?
A. Proud. B. Worried.
C. Curious. D. Guilty.

答案:B
30. What can we infer from the text about John?
A. He once served in both World Wars.
B. He was a man with a grateful heart.
C. He spent his childhood in Bangor.
D. He joined the navy in the 1970s.

We live in a world where we want everything instantly. In this instant world it is hard to succeed in anything. To achieve your goal you first have to change your life from instantly to persistently(坚持地).
Persistence is the course you need to set. When you change your expectancy from instantly to persistently you will gain an advantage of time that many do not have. Time works against those who live instantly. Opportunities are never seen because when something doesn’t happen instantly people move on to the next thing on their list and consider the current goal a failure.
Persistent people have the advantage of time. It allows them to step back, observe and assess the progress of the goal they are pursuing(追求). Some things take longer to develop; some just need to be left there for a while to find their own way.
When you live instantly you gain and lose instantly. Many times you do not know how you got there or how to get back because it is not repeatable.
When you live persistently you learn how things work, how to correct a plan and how to guide it to make it successful. You do not panic because you know you have more than enough time.
Slow down and take time to enjoy the journey. If what you are doing is not fun then stop doing it and do something else.
Everything you do should be in pursuit of a better tomorrow than you had yesterday. You should take time to develop your abilities to reach your goals. Do not get discouraged just because your success is not instant.
Celebrate each step along the way. People who live instantly don’t take time to appreciate what they have accomplished. They are just looking for the next thing that they can get instantly.
You must be grateful for the time it takes to reach your goal. Persistence will get you there if you really want to get there.
32. Why will people who want things instantly fail in many things?
A. They want greater efficiency.
B. They don’t stick to their goal.
C. They often change their lifestyle.
D. They tend to pursue a higher target.
根据第二段最后一句中的“Opportunities are never seen because when something doesn’t happen instantly people move on to the next thing ...”
33. What is the main advantage persistent people have over instant people?
A. The willpower. B. A target.
C. A plan. D. An opportunity.
故选A。
答案:A
34. According to the text, what do persistent people do?
A. They focus more on the result.
B. They work slower than instant people.
C. They get rewarded for their efforts.
D. They look for the next thing to do immediately when finishing one target.
根据最后一段中的“Persistence will get you there if you really want to get there.”
35. What is the author’s main purpose of writing the text?
A. To blame those who live instantly.
B. To persuade people to live happily.
C. To praise those who have succeeded.
D. To suggest learning the art of persistence.

A funny thing happened to Arthur when he was on the way to work one day. As he walked along Park Avenue near the First National Bank, he heard the sound of someone trying to start a car. He tried again and again but couldn’t get the car moving. Arthur turned and looked inside at the face of a young man who looked worried. “It seems that you’ve got a problem,” Arthur said.
“I’m afraid so. I’m in a big hurry and I can’t start my car.”
“Is there anything I can do to help?” Arthur asked. The young man looked at the two suitcases in the back seat and then said, “Thanks. If you’re sure it wouldn’t be too much trouble, you could help me get these suitcases into a taxi.”
“No trouble at all. I’d be glad to help.”
The young man got out and took one of the suitcases from the back seat. After placing it on the ground, he turned to get the other one. Just as Arthur picked up the first suitcase and started walking, he heard the loud noise of an alarm.
It was from the bank. There had been a robbery!
Park Avenue had been quiet a moment before. Now the air was filled with the sound of the alarm and the shouts of people running from all directions. Cars stopped and the passengers joined the crowd in front of the bank. People asked each other, “What happened?” But everyone had a different answer.
Arthur, still carrying the suitcase, turned to look at the bank and walked right into the young woman in front of him.
She looked at the suitcase and then at him. Arthur was surprised. “Why is she looking at me like that?” he thought. “The suitcase! She thinks I’m the bank thief!”
Arthur looked around at the crowd of people. He became frightened, and without another thought, he started to run.
注意:

As he was running, Arthur heard the young man shouting behind, “Stop!Stop!”
The taxi stopped in front of the police station
答案:
As he was running, Arthur heard the young man shouting behind, “Stop! Stop!” Arthur immediately realised that the young man was the bank robber. So Arthur didn’t stop, but continued to run until he saw a taxi in front of him. He quickly put the suitcase in the car and said to the taxi driver, “Please hurry to the police station. I have a case to report to the police. The man who is shouting behind is the bank thief!” The taxi driver said nothing and raced away to the police station like an arrow.
The taxi stopped in front of the police station and Arthur said to the police who had been waiting and had already received the robbery report, “This suitcase is from the bank robber. I think it may be filled with the money stolen from the bank. I hand it to you. Please get ready to arrest the man.”
