Vingt mille lieues sus les mers(excerpt) CAPTAIN NEMO std up. I fllwed him. Cntrived at the rear f the dining rm, a duble dr pened, and I entered a rm whse dimensins equaled the ne I had just left. It was a library. Tall, black-rsewd bkcases, inlaid with cpperwrk, held n their wide shelves a large number f
unifrmly bund bks. These furnishings fllwed the cnturs f the rm, their lwer parts leading t huge cuches uphlstered in marn leather and curved fr maximum cmfrt. Light, mvable reading stands, which culd be pushed away r pulled near as desired, allwed bks t be psitined n them fr easy study. In the center std a huge
table cvered with pamphlets, amng which sme newspapers, lng ut f date, were visible. Electric light flded this whle harmnius ttality, falling frm fur frsted half glbes set in the scrllwrk f the ceiling.
I stared in genuine wnderment at this rm s ingeniusly laid ut, and I culdn’t believe my eyes. Captain Nem, I tld my hst, wh had just stretched ut n a cuch, this is a library that wuld d credit t mre than ne cntinental palace, and I truly marvel t think it can g with yu int the deepest seas.
Where culd ne find greater silence r slitude, prfessr? Captain Nem replied. Did yur study at the museum affrd yu such a perfect retreat? N, sir, and I might add that it’s quite a humble ne next t yurs. Yu wn 6, 000 r 7, 000 vlumes here . . . 12, 000, Prfessr Arnnax. They’re my sle remaining ties with dry land.
But I was dne with the shre the day my Nautilus submerged fr the first time under the waters. That day I purchased my last vlumes, my last pamphlets, my last newspapers, and ever since I’ve chsen t believe that humanity n lnger thinks r writes.
In any event, prfessr, these bks are at yur dispsal, and yu may use them freely. I thanked Captain Nem and apprached the shelves f this library. Written in every language, bks n science, ethics, and literature were there in abundance, but I didn’t see a single wrk n ecnmics—they seemed t be strictly banned n bard.
One dd detail: all these bks were shelved indiscriminately withut regard t the language in which they were written, and this jumble prved that the Nautilus’s captain culd read fluently whatever vlumes he chanced t pick up.
Amng these bks I nted masterpieces by the greats f ancient and mdern times, in ther wrds, all f humanity’s finest achievements in histry, petry, fictin, and science, frm Hmer t Victr Hug, frm Xenphn t Michelet, frm Rabelais t Madame Gerge Sand. But science, in particular, represented the majr investment f this library,
Bks n mechanics, ballistics, hydrgraphy, meterlgy, gegraphy, gelgy, etc. , held a place there n less imprtant than wrks n natural histry, and I realized that they made up the captain’s chief reading.
There I saw the cmplete wrks f Humbldt, the cmplete Arag, as well as wrks by Fucault, Henri Sainte-Claire Deville, Chasles, Milne-Edwards, Quatrefages, Jhn Tyndall, Faraday, Berthelt, Father Secchi, Petermann, Cmmander Maury, Luis Agassiz, etc. , plus the transactins f France’s Academy f Sciences, bulletins frm the varius
gegraphical scieties, etc. , and in a prime lcatin, thse tw vlumes n the great cean depths that had perhaps earned me this cmparatively charitable welcme frm Captain Nem.
Amng the wrks f Jseph Bertrand, his bk entitled The Funders f Astrnmy even gave me a definite date; and since I knew it had appeared in the curse f 1865, I cncluded that the fitting ut f the Nautilus hadn’t taken place befre then. Accrdingly, three years ag at the mst, Captain Nem had begun his underwater existence.
Mrever, I hped sme bks even mre recent wuld permit me t pinpint the date precisely; but I had plenty f time t lk fr them, and I didn’t want t put ff any lnger ur strll thrugh the wnders f the Nautilus. Sir, I tld the captain, thank yu fr placing this library at my dispsal. There are scientific treasures here, and I’ll take advantage f them.
This rm isn’t nly a library, Captain Nem said, it’s als a smking rm. A smking rm? I exclaimed. Then ne may smke n bard? Surely. In that case, sir, I’m frced t believe that yu’ve kept up relatins with Havana.
Nne whatever, the captain replied. Try this cigar, Prfessr Arnnax, and even thugh it desn’t cme frm Havana, it will satisfy yu if yu’re a cnnisseur. I tk the cigar ffered me, whse shape recalled thse frm Cuba; but it seemed t be made f gld leaf.
I lit it at a small brazier supprted by an elegant brnze stand, and I inhaled my first whiffs with the relish f a smker wh hasn’t had a puff in days. It’s excellent, I said, but it’s nt frm the tbacc plant. Right, the captain replied, this tbacc cmes frm neither Havana nr the Orient.
It’s a kind f nictine-rich seaweed that the cean supplies me, albeit sparingly. D yu still miss yur Cubans, sir? Captain, I scrn them frm this day frward. Then smke these cigars whenever yu like, withut debating their rigin. They bear n gvernment seal f apprval, but I imagine they’re nne the wrse fr it.
On the cntrary. Just then Captain Nem pened a dr facing the ne by which I had entered the library, and I passed int an immense, splendidly lit lunge.
