The National Gallery is one of London’s most important museums.It has a collection of paintings which cover the period between 1260 and 1900.

At the beginning of the 19th century,King George Ⅳ realized that many European cities had opened art museums to the public.He didn’t want Britain to be left behind,so in 1824,he pushed the government into buying the house of John Julius Angerstein,a rich Russian banker and art collector who had just passed away.Besides the house,the government also bought a valuable collection of 34 paintings with works from renowned artists such as Rembrandt and Rubens.The works were shown in the banker’s residence (住宅) in the beginning.Over the years,the collection expanded to become one of the most famous in Europe and over 2,300 paintings are on show now.

Plans to replace the building were never realized.In 1876,the museum was expanded with a new east wing.In the mid 1980s,plans for a new expansion were made,but the modern design faced a different opinion,especially from the Prince of Wales.Therefore,it was shelved(搁置) and replaced with a more traditional building,known as the Sainsbury Wing.

The National Gallery’s collection includes European paintings from the 13th to the 19th centuries.The museum’s main entrance is at the Sainsbury Wing,to the left of the main building,where you will find the oldest paintings.Late Renaissance works can also be found in the west wing.Paintings of the 17th century from Italy,Flanders,Spain and the Netherlands are shown in the north wing.Paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries are on show in the east wing.Here you’ll find impressionist and post-impressionist works from artists like Van Gogh,Seurat and Renoir.
