      “Birds” and “airports” are two words that, paired together,don’t normally paint the most harmonious picture.So it really raises some eyebrows when China announces plans to build an airport that is for birds.

      Described as the world’s first-ever bird airport, the proposed Lingang Bird Sanctuary(保护区)in the northern coastal city of Tianjin is, of course, not an actual airport.Rather,it’s a wetland preserve specifically designed to accommodate hundreds-even thousands-of daily takeoffs and landings by birds traveling along the East Asian-Australian Flyway.Over 50 species of migratory (迁徙的)water birds,some endangered, will stop and feed at the protected sanctuary before continuing their long journey along the flyway.

      Located on a former landfill site,the 150-acre airport is also open to human travelers.(Half a million visitors are expected annually.) However,instead of duty-free shopping, the main attraction for non-egg-laying creatures at Tianjin’s newest airport will be a green-roofed education and research center, a series of raised “observation platforms” and a network of scenic walking and cycling paths totaling over 4 miles. 

      “The proposed Bird Airport will be a globally significant sanctuary for endangered migratory bird species, while providing new green lungs for the city of Tianjin.” Adrian McGregor of an Australian landscape architecture firm explained of the design.Frequently blanketed in smog so thick that it has shut down real airports.       Trees,some of the tallest in the world,towered above Hannah Griffiths and her colleagues each morning as they walked deep into the rainforest in the Maliau Basin in Bomeo,where they had set up a set of experiments to look at the ecological effects of small creatures:termites(白蚁).

        Termites get a bum rap.They make headlines for chewing up billions of dollars of property each year in the U S.And they are responsible for something like two percent of global carbon emissions,simply as a result of their huge populations and preference for chewing through carbon-rich materials.A whole industry is aiming at killing them. 

        But they play a key role in many natural ecosystems.Scientists have known for years that in tropical(热带的)forests,termites chew up fallen leaves and dead wood,keeping the fallen material under control and letting nutrients from the dead material back into the system to be used by other plants,insects,and animals.But they didn’t know exactly how important the insects were in keeping the forest healthy and functional,so they removed termites from a particular spot in the forest and saw how it responded.

        As luck would have it.Hannah Griffiths and her colleagues started their experiment when the forest was hit by an extreme drought(干旱).During the non-drought years,they saw there wasn’t much difference between the normal plots and the ones where they’d removed the termites.But during the drought,the effects were marked.What they found was unexpected:in the termite-rich areas,the soil stayed slightly wet,more tree seedlings sprouted(抽芽),and the system was full of activity despite the long,hard dry spell.

        For Griffiths,it was only because they happened to study the drought that they could pick out the real importance of termites to the system,she pointed out.“And that rings alarm bells in my head,” she said,“because it makes me think,well,what else don’t we know?If we start damaging biological communities,we don’t know what that will do.”

      The trailer is very vulnerable.It’s designed to keep away would-be theft, and to resist hurricanes.But a fire could easily destroy it, or a disease could sweep through it.Last September , a mystery pathogen(病原体)appeared to have entered the trailer on leaves fed to the snails, killing almost the entire species.As sad as the event was, there’s no good way to insure against future catastrophe.The snails can’t simply be spread among zoos or other facilities: they need special equipment, experienced handlers, and a diet of native Hawaiian plants.

      Consequently, it can be hard for the snails’ minders to relax, even when they are outside the trailer.“How do you switch off when your decisions mean existence or extinction?” Sischo said.While action lightens the burden, yet with animals whose natural history is largely unknown, that action can be dangerous.“If you do it wrong, the snails die.”

      Snails are neither intelligent nor beloved.Sischo’s friends sometimes tease him about being “the strange snail guy” ; strangers ask why he cares.It’s hard to convince people, but he insists that if he can just get them in the trailer, they will understand why the Achatinella bulimoides are worth saving.“People melt,” he said “When you show them that the entire population is in this chamber, it hits them.”
