My wife and I were down at the beach and trying to find a place to park in one of the many, and somewhat expensive, public parking lots. We were trying to get down to the beach in time to watch the sunset—one of my all time favorite things to do. After several failed attempts, we finally found one spot in the last lot so we pulled into the only space available.
As we were about to pay the price of parking there, a woman came up to us and said she had just paid for two hours(all the time we needed) but she had just been called back home and asked if we would like to have her parking pass. She refused to take any money for it and insisted that we take it. We gladly accepted it and thanked her for her kindness.
It was truly a “paying it forward” experience that we have often done, but one that hasn’t been done to us that often. I smiled at her with such gratitude. It was more than the price of the parking pass. Accepting the kindness of others is part of this process. We felt that and blessed by that kindness.
We got down to the beach in time to watch the sun setting because of this woman’s kindness and we were so grateful. It was a wonderful experience and the sunset was such a wonderful sight!

The Disneyland parks are full of amusements, but they are also small cities that deal with deliveries, rubbish, and groups of visitors. People need to move from one place to another; they have to refuel and relax. To meet these requirements, the parks are well-equipped in reality. For example, Disneyland Park in California has a reliable transport system. In Walt Disney World in Florida, dustbins are spaced 30 feet apart, and all of them are emptied through underground tubes.
None of this happened by accident. Walt Disney first had his idea for a play land in 1937. He first imagined the park’s buildings in a small size. He spent years collecting ideas by visiting other places. He studied Beverly Park in Los Angeles, including rebuilt historic villages. He visited Colonial Williamsburg, where employees dressed up and walked around. Then he organized a team of engineers and designers to plan and build a small world he called Disneyland. Walt Disney had blueprints(蓝图)drawn up, and tried to get the permission to break ground(破土动工).
In 1953, he bought some land in Anaheim. Some designers thought it was too far, but Disney went ahead. It was like building a new city. Pipes had to be fixed. Railway track had to be laid around. Disney chose the hub-and-spoke(轴辐式的)street pattern that many cities have. “I want Disneyland to be a place where you can’t get lost, ” he said. Designers and architects also diagrammed(图解)the rides and made models, while artists painted the background.
Finally in July 1955, the visitors came. If they picked up maps, they could see the results of years’ planning: the shops and restaurants, the square, and the streets. The magic city had finally jumped off the drawing board and come into real life.

An extremely enthusiastic truth seeker who runs the YouTube channel Bright Insight claims(声称)to have found the mysterious city of Atlantis and insists that its true location has been hiding in plain sight for thousands of years.
In a video, YouTube blogger Jimmy Bright argues that the Richat Structure, a geologic dome(穹状物)in northwest Sahara also referred to as the Eye of the Sahara, is the most likely location of Atlantis.
He mentioned measurements from the famous Dialogues of Plato, which gave birth to the mystery. The Greek philosopher(哲学家)claimed that Atlantis was a long-gone kingdom, which stretched into Europe as far as Italy and into Africa as far as Egypt thousands of years ago. The giant island was said to be wiped off the face of the planet by a natural disaster“in a single day and night of misfortune”.
At first sight, this has nothing to do with the land-based Richat Structure, but Jimmy claims that the so-called Younger Dryas theory could be a possible explanation. According to it, a massive change in global temperatures caused unexpected climate change and sea level to rise.
In what can be viewed as another proof to the Sahara theory, the diameter(直径)of the Richat Structure’s outer circle is 23. 5 km according to Google Map’s measurements, which matches those mentioned by Plato — 127 stadia, which is roughly 23. 5 km in today’s terms.
Another thing that helps solve the mystery is a theory that the Eye of the Sahara closely matches the description from Plato’s dialogues. The ancient philosopher wrote that the main city of Atlantis consisted of circles of water and land, which, Jimmy said, looks very similar to the circular form of the Richat Structure.
Although the majority of researchers believe that Plato’s story was nothing but a moral story used to describe a failed idea of seeking power and searching for fortune, it has raised quite a few theories. Since the Middle Ages, explorers have been pointing fingers at different places around the world, including the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, with the most amazing theories linking the location of Atlantis to the Antarctic and the North Sea.
32. What does Jimmy Bright claim to have discovered?
A. The most likely location of Atlantis.
B. The formation of the Richat Structure.
C. The measurements in the Dialogues of Plato.
D. The reasons behind the Younger Dryas theory.
【解析】选A。
33. How did Jimmy Bright do research into the location of Atlantis and arrive at a conclusion?
A. By studying the history of ancient Egypt.
B. By analyzing the research into Plato’s life story.
C. By explaining the Younger Dryas theory in a scientific way.
D. By comparing the Richat Structure with the famous Dialogues of Plato.
He mentioned measurements from the famous Dialogues of Plato, which gave birth to the mystery. 第五段中的the diameter of the Richat Structure’s outer circle is 23. 5 km according to Google Map’s measurements, which matches those mentioned by Plato及第六段中的Another thing that helps solve the mystery is a theory that the Eye of the Sahara closely matches the description from Plato’s dialogues.
34. What’s the purpose of mentioning the Younger Dryas theory in Paragraph 4?
A. To stress the importance of the Richat Structure.
B. To present the influence it had on Atlantis.
C. To prove that Jimmy Bright might be correct.
D. To show Jimmy Bright’s opinion is unique.
At first sight, this has nothing to do with the land-based Richat Structure, but Jimmy claims that the so-called Younger Dryas theory could be a possible explanation.
35. What can be learned from the article?
A. The Eye of the Sahara is a mystery mentioned in the Dialogues of Plato.
B. The Richat Structure is where the mysterious city of Atlantis used to lie.
C. The Younger Dryas may have caused the disappearance of Atlantis overnight.
D. The Plato’s story is meant to inspire explorers to locate the exact position of Atlantis.
The giant island was said to be wiped off the face of the planet by a natural disaster “in a single day and night of misfortune”“据说这个巨大的岛屿在’一天一夜之间’被一场自然灾害从地球表面上抹去”及第四段可推知, 所谓的新仙女木理论可能是一种解释。
What does Jimmy Bright claim to have discovered? In a video, YouTube blogger Jimmy Bright argues that the Richat Structure, a geologic dome in northwest Sahara also referred to as the Eye of the Sahara, is the most likely location of Atlantis. , 原文中的the most likely location of Atlantis与A选项中的The most likely location of Atlantis相对应, 从而得知, 吉米•布莱特声称发现了亚特兰蒂斯城最有可能的位置。

The 2-month-old baby with brown ears and blue eyes was 43 , and the lioness spent weeks nursing, 44 and caring for him until he died. She treated him as if he were one of her own two sons, who were about the same age. This was a 45 case of cross-species adoption in the wild, and the only documented example involving animals that are normally 46 .
47 , the park workers thought the association would be brief, but this went on. The family were 48 to tour the park. The lioness took care of the baby, and 49 meat that she hunted. The new brothers played with him and occasionally followed him up trees. This unlikely 50 was surely amazing.
Although this adoption was puzzling, it highlights the 51 between the two species. Until they reach young adulthood, when social differences 52 , lions and leopards play and beg for milk in similar ways. For this mother lioness, she may have 53 the baby’s more leopard-like features —his smell, size and spotted appearance. He just jumped in.
The 54 of the inter species adoption in the wild would be sweet enough for a children’s book, yet 55 enough to attract scientists.

CLEAN UP YOUR BUTTS AND BAGS
All sorts of items become litter, but two of the most common and most dangerous are cigarette butts(屁股)and plastic bags. Litter is a big problem for our environment, but it is a problem that individuals can easily do something about. Not littering at all or cleaning up litter, such as cigarette butts and plastic bags, greatly improves the quality of our environment.
Although cigarette butts are small, they are bad for the environment. Over 1, 600 billion cigarettes are smoked each year in China and large quantities of the butts are thrown away. Worldwide, about 4. 5 trillion butts are littered every year. Apart from the fact that butts spoil the beauty of the environment, they contain some very toxic chemicals. These find their way into the water supply where they decrease the quality of the water and endanger plants and animals that live there. Because there are so many butts and because they can take up to 5 years to break down, the toxic chemicals add up to a large amount. So, if people have to smoke, they should not throw away the butts but put them in the rubbish bin instead.
Plastic bags are another common form of litter that is a danger to the environment. There are several reasons for this. They are made from oil and gas, which are non-renewable resources, if they are not recycled, these resources are lost to us. In China, 2 billion plastic bags are used every day. An enormous number of these become litter. This is a huge problem because they last from 20 to 1, 000 years in the environment. They float easily in air and water and travel long distances. They find their way to rivers, parks, beaches and oceans. Plastic bags kill up to one million seabirds, 100, 000 sea mammals and countless fish each year worldwide. When the animal dies and breaks down, the plastic bag can become free again to kill another animal. It is up to people not to let plastic bags become litter. It would be better if they used fewer and recycled them.
Cleaning up your cigarette butts and plastic bags would improve the environment. The earth would be a better place because it would be less polluted. And we would know that we were doing something to look after our planet. However, I believe the best solution would be not to smoke or use plastic bags at all.

Located halfway up the Italy’s Apennine Mountain, about 100 miles northeast of Rome, the Hotel Rigopiano has never been easy to reach. But its isolation(隔绝)only adds to its appeal, attracting a great number of tourists.
Snow began to fall across the Apennines in January and lasted for days. From his home in the Rome suburbs, Matrone watched the weather with concern. He and his wife, Cicioni, had planned an overnight getaway to the hotel. But now he wondered whether they should go. After phoning the hotel, they decided to make the trip. By the time they neared the hotel six hours later, they were battling a snowstorm. When they finally arrived, they were both cold and exhausted. They checked into their room and went to bed early.
As they awoke the next day, they discovered that their difficulty had worsened overnight. The cars in the parking lot were invisible. The phone and power lines were down. They were having breakfast when the hotel began to shake. An earthquake with a magnitude(震级)of 5. 7 had struck the mountain. “Get out of here! ”Matrone shouted to his wife. They headed quickly to the parking lot, where others were digging their cars. Fifteen minutes after the first earthquake, another quake hit, this one measuring 5. 6.
With a dozen vehicles freed by noon, the guests set off down the driveway. But when they reached the main road, the path was blocked by a six-foot-high wall of snow. Matrone climbed out of his car and investigated it. There was no road in sight, “we’re trapped! ”he told his wife. So they had no choice but to make their way back to the hotel.
As it was getting dark, they managed to be back. That was when the snow on the mountain began to slide. They heard the avalanche(雪崩)before they saw it. The avalanche gathered speed and size, grabbing rocks and trees and anything else in its way down the mountain, tearing the hotel from its foundation. When the avalanche came to a stop, those caught inside the hotel were left buried in the icy rocks and ruins.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

When Matrone came to himself, he was stuck in the darkness. Lying on his stomach, he realized with horror that he was under something heavy and couldn’t move at all. “Cicioni! Cicioni! ” he called, but there was no response. He could hear nothing of what was happening at the surface. The whole world was dead still. What he had to face was a terrible reality—they were buried alive. Despair washed over him. He asked himself again and again, “Who is going to save us? ”
It was not until the next morning that the rescuers finally arrived. Without any hesitation they got down to detecting the remains of the hotel and they were delighted to discover there was sign of life beneath. With great efforts they removed the thick snow and began cutting the roof. Then they carefully lowered themselves through the hole they’d made. Suddenly, they heard someone crying for help in a weak voice. It was Matrone. Later all the survivors were rescued including Matrone’s wife. The couple felt really lucky to be still alive!
