One f the mst famus Chinese paintings in the wrld is the Qingming Shang He Tu r Alng the River During the Qingming Festival, by the Sng Dynasty painter Zhang Zeduan. It captures the daily life f peple frm the Sng perid at the capital, Bianjing, tday’s Kaifeng in Henan.
The theme celebrates the festive spirit and prsperus street scene at the Qingming Festival, rather than the hliday’s ceremnial aspects, such as tmb sweeping and prayers. The entire piece was painted in the handscrll frmat and the cntent reveals the lifestyle f all levels f sciety frm rich t pr as well as different ecnmic activities in rural areas and the city. And it has been called “China’s Mna Lisa.”
The riginal painting, which measures 24.8 by 528 cm, is nw in the cllectin f the Palace Museum in Beijing. This lng handscrll has three majr sectins: The right sectin is the rural area f the city. There are crp fields and unhurried rural flk in buclic scenery. A cuntry path bradens int a rad and jins with the city rad.
In the middle sectin, there are businesses f all kinds, selling wine, grain, musical instruments, paintings, medicine, as well as many restaurants. The left half is the urban area arund the city gate. Many ecnmic activities, such as peple lading carges nt the bat, shps, and even a tax ffice, can be seen in this area.
