Since Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay climbed Mount Everest, Mount Qomolangma's peak is no longer a lonely place and is turning into a trash heap.
So far,a large number of climbers have successfully reached the peak. And they have complained about waiting for hours in the bottlenecks (狭窄路段) on the way to the peak, a situation that isn't just uncomfortable—it's cold and windy up there—but downright dangerous. If bad weather strikes, climbers can die.
As a matter of fact, the dangerous crowds aren't the only problem on Mount Qomolangma. All those climbers need to bring a lot of gear—and much of it ends up being left on the mountain, sometimes even the peak itself. Mount Qomolangma is becoming the world's largest rubbish dump. Here's mountaineer Mark Jenkins' writing in National Geographic about the state of Mount Qomolangma, “The two standard routes, the Northeast Ridge and the Southeast Ridge, are badly polluted with oxygen cans and torn tents everywhere.”
But the good news is that some mountaineers are taking on the work to clean up Mount Qomolangma.Mountaineer Paul Thelen and his friend Eberhard Schaaf are part of the annual Eco Everest Expedition, which has been cleaning up rubbish from base camps to the peak since 2008.
Some of that rubbish is even being used for a higher purpose. As part of the Mt. Everest 8848 Art Project, a group of 15 artists from Nepal collected 1.5 tons of garbage brought down the mountain by climbers. They've transformed the cans and oxygen tanks—and in one case, part of the remains of a helicopter—into 74 pieces of art that have already gone on exhibition in Nepal's capital. Part of the profit from sales will go to an association, which has helped collect tons of rubbish on the slopes of the mountain.

What's life like on a deserted island? Senator Jeff Flake of Arizona decided to find out.
The adventurous senator took a vacation from Capitol Hill and went on a fourday Robinson Crusoe style holiday with his two teenage sons to a remote, deserted island in the North Pacific Ocean.
The senator and his sons,15yearold Tanner and 13yearold Dallin, traveled 5,200 miles from Phoenix,Arizona to the island of Biggarenn. They didn't carry any food or water.
The island is part of the Marshall Islands. It offered no basic supplies,so the Flakes had to catch and cook their own food and purify their water.Their diet was made up of coconuts, crabs and fish. They caught the crab and fish themselves and cooked the food over an open fire started with a magnifying glass (放大镜).
The Flakes brought along a lobster trap (龙虾夹) in the hope of having some delicious treats, but lost it within the first few hours after it was attacked by a shark. They also carried two pumps to remove salt from ocean water. It took them hours each night to pump for just a few gallons of fresh water.
One of the most memorable moments of the trip, the father said, was when he and his 15yearold son were almost caught by sharks after spearing (叉起) a fish in the ocean.
Still,it was quite an enjoyable holiday for them.“For a dad it was a wonderful thing. No video games around,no television,no disturbance,no texting,” Flake recalled.

During the 15th century, spices(香料)from India were very popular in Europe, however, the only way to travel from Europe to India was over land. This was a long and expensive trip. The King of Portugal realized if he could find a way to get to India by sailing on the ocean,he would become rich by trading spices in Europe. An explorer(探险家)by the name of Bartolomeu Dias had discovered the Cape of Good Hope at the tip of Africa. It was thought that there may be a way around the Cape and to the northeast towards India. However, many were skeptical and thought that the Indian Ocean did not connect with the Atlantic Ocean.
Vasco da Gama, who was born in 1460s to a wealthy Portuguese family in Sines, was given a fleet of ships by the king and told to discover a sea route(路线)around Africa to India. He was also told to look for other trading possibilities along the way.
Vasco da Gama left on his first voyage(航行)from Lisbon,Portugal, with four ships and 170 men on July 8,1497.Gama and his men rounded the southern tip of Africa at the Cape of Good Hope on November 22.They then headed north up the coast of Africa. They stopped at trading ports along the way including Mombasa and Malindi. At Malindi (about 120km northeast of Mombasa),they picked up a local pilot who knew the direction to India. With the help of a monsoon wind they were able to cross the Indian Ocean and arrive in Calicut,India in less than a month (on May 20,1498).At Calicut,Vasco ran into serious trouble when trying to trade. He had brought little of value in his ships. This made the local traders doubtful of him and very soon he had to leave. The voyage back was disastrous.Around half of his men died from scurvy(坏血病)as the trip back took much longer because of the winds not blowing in his favor. However, when he returned home,he was still a hero.He had found the much needed trade route to India.

At just ten, Selah Schneiter became the youngest person ever to climb El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. Selah was unaware that she was setting a record at the time.
“El Capitan was the mountain my wife Joy and I first climbed together,” Mike, Selah's father, said.“We fell in love while climbing.” After the couple married, they returned there to climb. They took Selah on her first trip to Yosemite when she was only two months old.
First asked if she'd try the Nose, the classic route most climbers take to reach the top of El Capitan, she declined. Then, she began to think about it more, and in 2018 she felt that she was able to make it.However, accomplishing the seemingly impossible climb requires more than simply deciding to go for it.Over the winter, Mike and Selah prepared for “the big decision”.
When it came time to the climb, Selah and Mike were joined by Mark Regier, a longtime family friend who had been part of the El Capitan team when Mike and Joy met. He was also the chief witness of their wedding.Doing such a climb with a tenyearold,Regier considered it seriously. “Being a father myself,I must look after her well,” he said.At first he checked and doublechecked everything she did, but after a while he was sure Selah knew what she was doing. Then they set off.
In the process, Selah showed fortitude.“It wasn't that frightening,” she said. “The only thing I ever got scared of was what would happen if I didn't do this.”She admitted to getting nervous at the foot of the mountain, but later she calmed herself and was comfortable being high.Eventually, she and her companions completed the 5day climb successfully.

Snow began when she was halfway home.Listening to the radio,Kathy learned the highway was closed because a tractor had slid off the road. She texted some friends and her mom,and tried not to sleep as she waited.
After a couple of hours, however, conditions worsened.Strong winds began rocking Kathy's car.She couldn't see anything outside, and snow was drifting up her doors. It was,she says,“a total white out and rows of cars and trucks.”
Late in the afternoon a police officer came and asked if she was in any difficulty. She said she was fine. She asked the police officer if there was any way to get past the trucks.“No,ma'am,” he answered.“You're not going anywhere.”
Once as it got dark,Kathy began to worry. She texted his brother Cris, telling him to drive snowmobiling buddy(雪地汽车) to get to the highway and find her.
As Cris rode slowly alongside the rows of cars and trucks, people would roll down their windows and ask for help.“I was the first person they'd seen in six hours.”He explained he was picking up his sister. He told them,“Nobody's coming and I can't take you.”
Near 10 p.m.Cris reached Kathy. He directed Kathy to pull her car onto the shoulder and asked her to get into his snowmobiling buddy.
As they headed for home, the fun started.About five kilometres into the journey,Cris made a mistake. What he thought was a shallow ditch(浅沟) turned out to be a deep trough(水槽).Instead of coming out the other side, they just kept going down. They were trapped. And feathery snow was over their heads.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
At that moment, they had to take action and get out.
When Kathy arrived at her home, her mother was waiting for her.
