这是一份英语必修 第三册Unit 5 What an adventure!

    A

Kenny Li is waiting patiently at a coach terminus(终点站) in Kowloon on a misty and cold Hong Kong morning.

He is planning to have lunch in the city of Zhuhai, which on a normal day would take him about four hours to reach by road. But today the journey will take just over 30 minutes, because today is not a normal day.

Kenny is one of scores of passengers—including the correspondent (记者)—who are queuing for a seat on one of the first crossborder coaches to travel over the newlyopened Hong KongZhuhaiMacao Bridge.

The $20bn, 55km bridge and 6.7km undersea tunnel link Hong Kong's Lantau island to Zhuhai on the southern coast of Guangdong Province and Macao. The mega structure is supported by three cablestayed bridges and designed to withstand typhoonforce winds.

It took more than eight years to build and, according to ambitious plans hatched (策划) in Beijing, will help form a hightech and economic region, namely Greater Bay Area, to rival New York, San Francisco and Tokyo bay areas.

But those lofty aims feel fairly irrelevant to the band of eager passengers who have assembled at the Kowloon coach terminus on Wednesday morning. This group wants something different from the HZMB, as it has become known. For just HK $120 for a single trip ticket, we can be part of history.

I was the first person to get the ticket three days ago says Li, as he waits patiently for the coach to arrive.

Other passengers are similarly excited. YW Cheung and his wife bought the tickets on Sunday as soon as he heard about the news about coach companies running the bridge service.

I want to take the first coach to cross the bridge he said. “We will meet friends in Zhuhai and eat out with them, and then we will go to Macao.”

21Why is today different for Kenny Li?

ABecause it is a misty and cold day in the morning.

BBecause he has to wait patiently at a coach terminus.

CBecause the time to Zhuhai will be saved more.

DBecause he can have lunch in Zhuhai by road.

22What is special for Hong KongZhuhaiMacao Bridge?

    AIt can withstand typhoonforce winds.

BA round trip ticket of the coach by it just costs HK $120.

CIt is irrelevant to passengers at the Kowloon coach terminus.

DIt is part of history, more brilliant than New York.

    答案:A

The mega structure is supported by three cablestayed bridges and designed to withstand typhoonforce winds.

23Where does this text probably come from?

AA fashion magazine.   BA history book.

    CA tourist brochure.   DA newspaper.

The results from the world's largest sleep study have shown that people who sleep on average between 7 to 8 hours per night perform better cognitively (认知地) than those who sleep less or more than this amount.

The world's largest sleep study was launched in June 2018 and within days more than 40,000 people from the world participated in the online scientific investigation, which included an indepth questionnaire and a series of cognitive performance activities.

We really wanted to capture the sleeping habits of people around the entire globe. Obviously, there have been many smaller sleep studies of people in laboratories but we wanted to find out what sleep is like in the real world says Adrian Owen, western's researcher in Cognitive Neuroscience and Imaging. “People who logged in gave us a lot of information about themselves. We had a fairly extensive questionnaire and they told us things like which medications they were on, where they were in the world and what kind of education they'd received because these are all factors that might have contributed to some of the results.”

More than half of all participants reported typically sleeping less than 6.3 hours per night, about an hour less than the study's recommended amount. One shocking truth was that most participants who slept four hours or less performed as if they were almost nine years older.

Another surprising discovery was that sleep affected all adults equally. The amount of sleep associated with highly functional cognitive behavior was the same for everyone, regardless of age. Also, the harm associated with too little, or too much sleep did not depend on the age of the participants.

We found that the best amount of sleep to keep your brain performing its best is 7 to 8 hours every night. We also found that people that slept more than that amount were equally harmed as those who slept too little says Conor Wild, Owen Lab Research Associate and the study's lead author.

24Where did the study take place?

AIn a lab. BIn the street.

    COn TV. DOn the Internet.

The world's largest sleep study was launched in June 2018 and within days more than 40,000 people from the world participated in the online scientific investigation

25What may affect the result of the study according to Owen?

    ACareer. BDiet.

    CEducation. DExercise.

We had a fairly extensive questionnaire and they told us things like which medications they were on, where they were in the world and what kind of education they'd received because these are all factors that might have contributed to some of the results.

    26What's Wild's view?

ASleeping too much is as bad as sleeping too little.

BPeople must sleep for eight hours every night.

CSleeping too little can make people look older.

DPeople needn't pay attention to the amount of sleep.

    答案:A

We also found that people that slept more than that amount were equally harmed as those who slept too little可知Wild认为睡眠太多和睡眠过少都会受到伤害,故选A

27What can we learn from the text?

AOwen and Wild are the first to study sleep.

BLack of enough sleep is a common problem.

CAll the people in the world show interest in the study.

DThere is no effective way to solve the sleep problem.

More than half of all participants reported typically sleeping less than 6.3 hours per night, about an hour less than the study's recommended amount.

    C

For many years, Bruce Bexler dreamed of going where no human had gone before. He wanted to cut a path through unexplored lands and discover rare, exotic species.

That might sound like an impossible dream, but Bexler turned it into a reality.

In December 2015, he and a team of Australian and American scientists ventured into an isolated tropical rain forest on the island of New Guinea. They were the first people ever to enter the mistcovered region. As time was limited, we were dropped in by helicopter. Once we were on the ground, there were no trails anywhere; it was really hard to get around Bexler says.

Within minutes of landing, the team spotted a black chickenlike bird with strange orange skin hanging from its neck. The scientists soon determined that the unusual creature was a type of honeyeaters—the first new bird species to be sighted on New Guinea in 60 years.

The honeyeater wasn't the only surprise for the scientists. They discovered more than 40 previously unknown plant and animal species—13 birds of paradise, 20 frogs, four butterflies, and five palms. We_were_like_kids_in_a_candy_store Bexler recalls. “Everywhere we looked, we saw amazing things we had never seen before.”

The newfound species didn't shy away from the scientists. Two longnosed echidnas—primitive egglaying mammals—let the visitors pick them up and take them back to camp to study them. An echidna looks like a hedgehog and is also called a spiny anteater.

Bexler thinks the animals weren't scared because they had never seen humans before. In almost all parts of New Guinea, animals are hunted for food, and because of this, they are very cautious of people he explains.“This area gives scientists a place where they can go to study the behaviours of animals that have not yet learned to be afraid of people.”

Scientists believe the area is probably the largest untouched forest in Asia.Local people called Kwerba hunt and collect plants from the outeredges of the forest but told Bexler that not even their ancestors had gone so far into the woods. The wooded area is approximately a 10day walk from the nearest village.

Bexler and his team did not have enough time during the expedition to study the area completely. They hope to return and expect to record many more undiscovered species. We just scratched the surface Bexler says.“Anyone who goes there will come back with a mystery.”

28Which word best describes Bruce Bexler?

    AAdventurous. BCautious.

    COptimistic. DCareful.

    答案:A

29What does Bruce Bexler mean in Paragraph 5 when he says “We were like kids in a candy store”

AThey didn't have enough food and were hungry.

BThey were very excited about what they saw.

CThey were misbehaving like naughty children.

DThey knew that if they kept searching, they'd find sugar in the forest.

Everywhere we looked, we saw amazing things we had never seen before. We were like kids in a candy store指的是Bruce Bexler因为在这个杳无人烟的地方发现了许多未曾见过的新物种而非常兴奋,就像在糖果店里的孩子一样。故选B项。

30Why did some of the animals allow the scientists to pick them up?

AThe scientists seemed to be very friendly.

BThe scientists were skilled in handling animals.

CThe animals had been welltrained by the local people.

DThe animals had no experience or fear of people.

Bexler thinks the animals weren't scared because they had never seen humans before.

31What can we conclude about the area Bruce Bexler explored?

AThe best way to explore the area is by helicopter.

BThe locals live in the centre of the forest.

CThe area still contains many plants and animals unknown to science.

DThe locals are unwilling to allow the scientists to enter the deep woods.

They hope to return and expect to record many more undiscovered species.

    D

A full moon is appearing—and it will have a big impact on animals, especially those in the ocean.

Recent studies show that many types of animals have biological clocks finely tuned to the cycles of the moon, which drives interesting and sometimes strange patterns of behavior.

Besides discovering hidden aspects of animal life, the research also has intention of better understanding the circadian clocks (生物钟) present in all animals, including humans.

The first circadian clocks evolved in the oceans, so studying them in ocean animals can tell us a lot about how they evolved and how they work and interact with each other, explains Kim Last, a researcher at the Scottish Association for Marine Science.

Oysters (牡蛎), which open their shells to eat and spawn, also have a lunar rhythm, a new study shows.

In a recent experiment, French researchers carefully monitored how widely a dozen oysters opened their shells during a 3.5month period. The team used a hightech device that quantified the valve opening every two seconds, as described in a paper published in the journal Biology Letters.

They found that two types of oysters in Arcachon Bay in southwestern France were significantly more open during new moons and more closed when the moon was full. In addition, the oysters could tell the difference between the first quarter moon and the third quarter moon, and were significantly more open (by nearly 20 percent) at the latter.

It's unknown why the oysters do this, though it could be due to more algae (海藻) or other food being available during the new moon and as the year progresses, says study leader Damien Tran, a researcher at the University of Bordeaux.

The lunar cycle could influence food availability by its impact on the tides and thus the ocean's currents. When the moon is full or new, it is directly in line with Earth and the sun, forcing a strong pull on the ocean and thus causing more pronounced tides, explains David Wilcockson, an ocean biologist at Aberystwyth University in Wales who wasn't part of the study.

32Where did the earliest life forms probably evolve?

AIn the tides. BIn the oysters.

CIn the moon. DIn the ocean.

The first circadian clocks evolved in the oceans, so studying them in ocean animals can tell us a lot about how they evolved and how they work and interact with each other, explains Kim Last, a researcher at the Scottish Association for Marine Science.

33Based on the observations, what is the likely order of when the oysters are most open and most closed?

The new moon  The full moon

The first quarter  The third quarter

    A B

    C D

They found that two types of oysters in Arcachon Bay in southwestern France were significantly more open during new moons and more closed when the moon was full. In addition, the oysters could tell the difference between the first quarter moon and the third quarter moon, and were significantly more open (by nearly 20 percent) at the latter.

34What is it that leads to the huge tides?

AA strong pull. BA straight line.

CThe lunar cycle. DThe ocean's current.

    答案:A

When the moon is full or new, it is directly in line with Earth and the sun, forcing a strong pull on the ocean and thus causing more pronounced tides

35Why are oysters mentioned as an example?

ATo explain why they open their shells.

BTo further stress the moon's impact on animals.

CTo show the difficulty of science experiments.

DTo introduce how the hightech device is used in experiments.

A full moon is appearing—and it will have a big impact on animals, especially those in the ocean.

if引导的是省略句,省略了it (代指certain physical or mental conditions)isitprove之间是被动关系,所以用过去分词。

    58to_swim

the ability to do sth.

    62that/which

代指先行词 a necessary skill 作定语从句的主语用that/which

    63with/to

短语link...to/with……

    64As

修饰名词a water sport表示作为As

    65Consequently

it's beneficial to students in the long run表示从长远来看对学生有好处,是完整的句子,所以用Consequently来作状语。

In a class I teach for adults. I recently did something “unpardonable”. I gave the class homework! The assignment was to “go to someone you love within the next week and tell them you love them. It has to be someone you have never said those words to before or at least haven't shared those words with for a long time.” Now that doesn't sound like a very tough assignment, until you stop to realize that most of the men were over 35 and were raised in the generation of men that were taught that expressing emotions is not “macho”(男子气概的). Showing feelings or crying (heaven forbid) was just not done. So this was a very threatening assignment for some.

At the beginning of our next class, I asked if someone wanted to share what happened when they told someone they loved them. I fully expected one of the women to volunteer, as was usually the case, but on this evening one of the men raised his hand.

He appeared quite moved and a bit shaken. As he unfolded out of his chair, he began by saying, Dennis, I was quite angry with you last week when you gave us this assignment.

I didn't feel that I had anyone to say those words to, and besides, who were you to tell me to do something that personal?

But as I began driving home my conscience started talking to me. It was telling me that I knew exactly who I needed to say I love you to.

You see, five years ago, my father and I had a severe disagreement and really never resolved it since that time. We avoided seeing each other unless we absolutely had to at Christmas or other family gatherings. But even then, we hardly spoke to each other.

So last Tuesday by the time I got home I had convinced myself I was going to tell my dad I loved him.

It's weird (怪异的), but just making that choice seemed to lift a heavy load off my chest.

The next morning I was up bright and early. I was so excited I could hardly sleep. I got to the office early and accomplished more in two hours than I had the whole day before.

    答案

    Paragraph 1

At 900 I called my dad to see if I could come over after work. My dad sounded still angry with me even after such a long time, but he finally agreed, not knowing my real purpose of this visit. At 530, I was at my parents' house ringing the doorbell, praying that Dad would answer the door. I was afraid if Mom answered that I would change my mind and not carry out my tough assignment. But as luck would have it, Dad did answer the door. I didn't waste any time. I took one step in the door and said, “Dad, I just came over to tell you that I love you.”

    Paragraph 2

It was as if a complete change came over my dad. His face softened, the wrinkles seemed to disappear and he began to cry. He reached out and hugged me and said. “I love you too, son, but I've never been able to say it.” So my message to all of you is: Don't wait to do the things you need to do.
