After 400 years, William Shakespeare (1564—1616) is still widely celebrated as a great crafter f language and playwright (剧作家). But he was nt the nly great master f dramatic writing t die in 1616, and he is certainly nt the nly writer t have left a lasting impact n theatre. While less knwn wrldwide, Tang Xianzu is rightly cnsidered China’s greatest playwright and is highly admired in that cuntry f ancient literary and dramatic traditins.
Tang was brn in 1550 in Linchuan, Jiangxi prvince, and wrked as a gvernment fficial until, in 1598 and aged 49, he retired t fcus n writing. Unlike Shakespeare’s large bdy f plays and pems, Tang wrte nly fur majr plays: The Purple Hairpin, A Dream under a Suthern Bugh, Dream f Handan and The Peny Pavilin—widely cnsidered t be his masterpiece. In the latter three, much f the stry is tld thrugh dream sequences. Tang used these scenes t explre human emtins in ways that challenged the feudal system f his time. It is a similar dream structure that we find in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Tang lived twards the end f the Ming Dynasty (1368—1644) and, similarly t Shakespeare, his lasting success was partly due t the grwth f theatre as an artistic practice during his lifetime. As in Shakespeare’s England, it became hugely ppular in China, with public theatres pening in different cities and travelling perfrmance grups becming cmmn. Theatrical audiences started t ppulate pen public spaces, and theatre as a ppular frm f entertainment fund its place utside palaces. Hwever, unlike in Shakespeare’s England, there was hardly any mixing f the rich with cmmners at theatrical events.
During this time, the way in which play-texts were enjyed, spread and perfrmed als changed. Initially, Chinese dramas had an emphasis n petic language and were distributed in bk frm, t be read like nvels. They were seldm, if ever, perfrmed. Hwever, frm the mid-16th century, kunqu pera, a frm f musical drama, spread frm suthern China t becme a symbl f Chinese culture.
While Tang and Shakespeare lived a wrld away frm each ther, they share in cmmn the humanity f their drama, their heric figures, their lve fr language, a lasting ppularity—and the anniversary during which we still celebrate them.
