Take a lk at yur friends. D they bring ut the best in yu? That might seem like a silly questin. We all tend t think, “Of curse they bring ut the best in me. I wuldn’t be friends with them therwise.”
    Sectin 2: Vcabulary teaching strategy
    I. The rle f vcabulary teaching
In the cntext f learning English as a freign language, a learner is frced t be autnmus and independent and make cnscius effrt t learn vcabulary utside the classrm simply because the expsure t the target language is limited in class. S teachers cannt rely n their students ‘picking up’ lexical items. This makes explicit vcabulary teaching necessary. Hwever, vcabulary is ntriusly difficult if nt impssible t teach because f the cmplexity f its linguistic, semantic and psych-cgnitive aspects
    II. Best apprach
There are n universally useful strategies and they cntribute t vcabulary learning in different ways. Students use a number f strategies, ften simultaneusly. The efficiency f vcabulary learning depends n hw students cmbine individual strategies. If students cmbine and emply individual strategies frm different grups they will be mre successful in develping the target language lexicn. Thus, the ideal cmbinatin wuld be that f strategies frm all fur grups.
The teacher shuld create activities and tasks (t be dne bth in and utside class) t help students t build their vcabulary and develp strategies t learn the vcabulary n their wn. Students experiment and evaluate and then decide which t adpt r reject since strategies are nt intended t be prescriptive.
    III. Practical activities
Here is a selectin f practical activities that direct learners twards using strategies f vcabulary learning.
    1. The useful alphabet (self-initiated independent learning)
Each student gets a letter and has t find 5, 10 r 15 wrds he r she thinks wuld be useful fr him r her. He r she then reprt t the class, perhaps as a mingle activity, using wrd cards (n ne side they write the letter, n the ther the infrmatin n the wrd - spelling, prnunciatin, definitin).
    2. Wrd bag (frmal practice)
This is t get yur students t write dwn new wrds they hear in class.
At the beginning f the term/curse, divide students int grups f abut 5 and give each grup a number (e.g. 1-6). At the beginning f each class, give each grup abut 10 cards n which they write the number f their grup and the new wrds they hear in class. At the end f each class, they put their cards int the “wrd bag” and every 2 weeks yu check whether they still knw thse wrds and which grup has the mst cards. In the end there are tw winners: the grup that has the mst cards, and the ne that knws mre wrds.
    3. Especially fr yu (Functinal practice)
The teacher prepares a list f wrds. Each student gets ne wrd, which is prepared especially fr him r her. The trick is that each student gets a wrd whse initial letter is the same as the initial f the student’s first name, e.g. Linda gets listless. Each student must lk it up in the dictinary during the class and after a few minutes reprt t the class. E.g. “My name is Linda and I’m listless. That means that I am ... (definitin)...”. Fr hmewrk students can d the same using their surname.
    4. Wrd tur (memrizing)
Instructins fr yur students: Think f a twn r city yu knw well. Imagine that yu are rganizing a sightseeing tur. Think f 5 places yu wuld include n yur tur and write dwn the rder in which the turists wuld visit them. Learn yur tur ff by heart s that yu can picture it in yur mind. Whenever yu have 5 new English wrds t learn, imagine these wrds are the turists n yur tur and picture the wrds in the places n yur tur like this.
Tur: Trafalgar Square; Buckingham Palace; Huses f Parliament; Westminster Abbey; Dwning Street. Wrds t learn: aprn, dustpan, vacuum cleaner, feather duster, brm. Imagine Nelsn n his clumn in Trafalgar Square wearing an aprn, the queen brushing the flr in Buckingham Palace and using a dustpan...
