FRIENDS,GOOD FRIENDS AND SUCH GOOD FRIENDS
Friends amng wmen
(Adapted frm Judith Virst)
Peple usually think that wmen are friends and when they are friends they are friends all the way,but I believe that is a narrw pint f view. Fr the friendships I have and the friendships I see are at many levels, serve different purpses, meet different needs and range frm thse as all-the-way as the friendship f the full sisters t that f the mst casual playmates.
Cnsider these friendships at the different levels:
1.Cnvenience friends. These are the wmen with whm,if ur paths weren’t crssing all the time we’d have n particular reasn t be friends:a next dr neighbr,a wman in ur car pl r maybe the mther f ne f ur children’s clsest friends.
Cnvenience friends are cnvenient indeed. They’ll lend us their cups and silverware fr a party. They’ll drive ur kids t a ftball match when we’re sick. They’ll give us a lift when ur car is under repair. They’ll even take ur cats when we g n hliday.
But we dn’t,with cnvenience friends, ever cme t clser r tell t much;we maintain ur public face and emtinal distance.
“That means,” says Eileen,“that I’ll talk abut being verweight but nt abut being depressed. Or I’ll admit that ur by is naughty but nt nasty. Or I might say that we’re pinched this mnth but never that I’m wrried sick ver mney.” But that desn’t mean that there isn’t sufficient value t be fund in these friendships f mutual aid,in cnvenience friends.
2.Special-interest friends. These friendships needn’t invlve kids r silverware r cats. Their value lies in sme interest jintly shared. And s we may have a stamp friend r a tennis friend r a shpping friend r a friend frm the Wmen’s Demcratic Club.
“I’ve gt ne wman friend,” says Jyce,“wh likes,as I d,t take Mdern Psychlgy Curses, which makes it nice fr me—and nice fr her. It’s fun t g with smene yu knw and it’s fun t discuss what yu’ve learned.” And fr the mst part, she says, that’s all they discuss.
“I’d say that what we’re ding is ding tgether,nt being tgether,” Susan says f her tennis friend.“It’s mainly a tennis relatinship, but we play tgether well. And I guess we all need t have a cuple f playmates.”
My playmate is a shpping friend,a wman f great taste,a wman wh knws exactly where t buy what, and furthermre is a wman wh always knws beynd a dubt what ne ught t be buying. I’m very glad t have a shpping friend when I need t buy smething.
3.Histrical friends. We all have friends wh knew us when we were, say,in the secnd grade, when ur family lived in that pr tw-rm flat in New Yrk,when ur dad was ut f wrk fr seven mnths, and when I stle a pencil frm a by in my class, she was the first, the nly, friend we tld.
The years have gne by and we’ve gne separate ways and we’ve little in cmmn nw,but we’re still a dear part f each ther’s past. Every time when we see r write t each ther we are put in tuch with an earlier part f urselves which is imprtant never t lse.
4.Crssrads friends. Like histrical friends ur crssrads friends are imprtant fr the friendships we shared at a very special,nw past, time f life. A time, perhaps, when we rmed in cllage tgether;r wrked as eager yung singles in a big city tgether;r went tgether,as my friend Elizabeth and I did thrugh a perid f time f treatment in hspital and abut tw mnths f regaining ur health.
Crssrads friends establish pwerful links, links strng enugh t endure with nt much mre cntact than nce-a year letters at Christmas. And ut f respect fr thse crssrads years,fr thse dramas and dreams we nce shared we will always be friends.
There are medium friends, and pretty gd friends, and very gd friends indeed. But the best f friends,I believe, ttally lve and supprt and trust each ther, and tell each ther the secrets in the depth f their suls, and run—n questins asked—t help each ther;r,as the saying ges:A friend in need is a friend indeed.
Fill in a phrase frm the text r f yur wn t cmplete each f the fllwing statements:
1.In cnvenience friends yu will find the value f____________.
2.Special-interest friends are thse wh have____________.
3.Histrical friends are the friends wh are____________.
4.Crssrads friends are thse wh shared the friendship at____________.
5.The best friends are friends____________.
(答案:1.mutual aid;2.sme interest jintly shared;3.dear part f each ther’s past 4.very special perid f time in their life 5.in need)
