Orange-scented algae (藻类) culd becme an unexpected weapn against the wrld’s grwing micrplastic pllutin crisis. Researchers at the University f Missuri are develping a new way t remve tiny plastic pllutants frm water using specially engineered algae.
Susie Dai, a researcher at the University f Missuri, recently created a mdified (改良的) strain f algae designed t capture harmful micrplastics frm plluted water. The mdified algae prduce limnene, an range-scented il that helps them stick t waterprf micrplastics. This prcess wrks almst like a magnet (磁铁): the algae and micrplastics stick tgether, frming clumps that are easy t remve frm water.

Dai’s lng-term gal is nt nly t clean waterways but als t recycle the cllected plastic int safer biplastic materials, including mixed plastic films. Micrplastics are tiny pieces f plastic that cme frm brken-dwn bttles, bags and ther prducts. They are hard t remve frm water because they are s small and waterprf. Traditinal water treatment methds ften struggle t catch them.
Dai’s team first develped the algae t prduce limnene fr bifuel. But during their experiments, they nticed that the algae were naturally sticking t micrplastics in the water. This unexpected discvery led them t fcus n the algae’s ptential as a micrplastic cleaner.
The team believes this algae-based methd culd be cheaper and mre envirnmentally friendly than ther technlgies. Unlike pricey filters (过滤器) r chemicals, the algae grw naturally in water and d nt leave harmful waste behind.
They are nw wrking t imprve the algae’s ability t absrb different types f micrplastics. If successful, this technlgy culd help clean drinking water and wastewater arund the wrld, ffering hpe in the fight against plastic pllutin.
8.What is the main functin f the mdified algae?
      A.T prduce range-scented il.

Chinese researchers have created a lightweight wearable rbt fr recvery. Published in the jurnal Nature, the new rbt is designed t help children suffering frm severe spinal atrphy (SMA) recver their muscle strength thrugh prfessinal training.
SMA is a neurmuscular disrder (神经肌肉紊乱) that affects nerves and causes muscle weakness, limiting patients’ mvement. Related symptms can be relieved thrugh physical treatment such as iskinetic resistance (等速抗阻) training. This frm f exercise builds muscle strength by cntrlling mvement speed. Hwever, the equipment required fr such training is nly available in specialized medical rganizatins. Besides, these training devices are verly heavy and incnvenient fr children t use.
Different frm traditinal rbts that help users mve directly, this 0.96-kilgram rbt is wrn n the knees. It prvides adjustable resistance during mvement instead f ffering direct supprt. By keeping a steady mving speed and changing resistance prperly, it can fully activate (激活) weak muscles and nerves, which helps stp muscles frm becming weaker due t lng-term inactivity.
A small clinical test was carried ut n six children aged 6 t 10 with SMA Type II. Befre the test, nne f them culd stand up n their wn. Finally, all the children were able t stand up frm a sitting psitin withut any help. Besides, the vlume f their leg muscles rse by 19 percent n average, shwing clear imprvement in their physical cnditin.
Feng Yangang, the main researcher, said the rbt is light and equipped with safety systems, s kids can wear it fr a lng time safely. Althugh the present results are satisfying, mre tests with mre participants are still needed t prve its lng-term effects. The research team als plans t apply this technlgy t mre peple, including adults wh have muscle prblems because f illness r ld age.
12.What differs the new wearable rbt frm traditinal devices?
A.Supprting kids’ mvements t reduce tiredness.
      B.Activating muscles by adjustable resistance.
C.Being heavier but lasting fr lng-term use.
D.Requiring fun games t functin prperly.
13.What can we learn abut the children in the clinical trial?
A.They culd stand independently befre the trial.
B.Their muscle cntinued t wrsen during the training.
C.Their physical ability and muscle grwth were imprved.
D.They still needed the rbt’s supprt t stand after the trial.
14.What is the authr’s attitude tward the new recvery rbt?
      A.Dubtful.B.Satisfied.C.Objective.D.Psitive.
15.Which is the best title fr the passage?
A.A New Rbt fr Kids with SMA
B.Clinical Tests n Kids with SMA
