Over the years, you've probably known a good number of people-some for only a short period and others for a much longer time. If you spend a moment thinking back on the people who have meant the very most to you, selflessness(无私)will be the same thing they share. There might have been a person who really believed in you. Someone taught you something important. Someone cared for you in his or her own way. Someone has simply always remained your friend.
Many years ago, I traveled through the beautiful, history-rich country of Greece. With only a small backpack, I stayed at youth hotels, visit city after city. One day, a shoulder strap (背带)on my backpack broke. I didn't speak any Greek and the owner didn't speak any English. I went to the front desk of my hotel and tried to ask him if there might be a shop nearby where I could have it repaired.
He was clearly very busy. But he asked someone to watch over the front desk and then signed(示意)to me to follow him. We walked together for a few blocks, arriving at a little shoe repair shop. Within ten minutes, my backpack was repaired, and then the hotel owner insisted on paying for it!
I was shocked by this powerful, unexpected kindness. More than any other thing, it's what I recall most often when I think about my trip to Greece. Sometimes, you may not have even realized how much your selflessness toward someone has mattered. As the saying goes, "To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world."

C. He picked up Greek while travelling in Greece.
D. He'll never forget the hotel owner's kindness.
27. What's the author's main purpose of writing the text?
A. To show his love of travelling. B. To explore the value of selflessness.
C. To give a short introduction to Greece. D. To introduce a shoe repair shop in Greece.

Scientists have long thought about whether each animal species(物种)has a different language, much like different human languages that we cannot understand. Language experts agree on the fact that the way animals communicate through various calls which are not like human languages.
Animal calls are not considered as a language because the calls are limited to information related to food activities, warning about the presence of enemies and so on. They haven't the characteristics(特征)that all human languages have. That is because humans create new expressions every day by connecting different words. However, animal calls have unchanged meanings.
Anyway, animals do communicate. People who study humans believe that people speak with their whole bodies. To express a message, one does not always need words. Have you ever shared a private joke with your friends across the table? All you did was to give them a self-satisfied smile. Animals can communicate in much the same way as humans do. Although animals do not have the ability to speak words, they can use other methods, such as movements, calls and their sense of smell. In short, most of their communication is not related with speech.
If animals can make noises, why can't they talk? Humans and animals both have the necessary organs(器官)that produce sounds, such as lungs, throat, voice box, lips and tongue. However, human organs are fully developed, which makes it possible for us humans to speak.
28. What do we know about animal calls and human languages?
A. Animal calls can express richer meanings.
B. Animal calls are made only in dangerous situations.
C. Human languages are more creative and changeable.
D. Both of them can express the same meanings.
29. Animals can communicate by .
A. movement B. language C. speech D. writing
30. Why do animals fail to speak according to the last paragraph?
A. They don't need to communicate by speaking.
B. They haven't the necessary organs to produce sounds.
C. Their language-related organs aren't fully developed.
D. Their throats and lips are too wide to speak.
31. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Why Can Humans Speak?
B. Are Lungs Necessary to Speak?
C. Why Humans Can't Understand Animal Calls?
D. Are Animal Calls a Language Humans Don't Understand?
D
The fourth Thursday in November is celebrated as Thanksgiving Day. People can thank friends, and anyone for the experience, happiness and sunshine they bring into their life. Pilgrims(朝圣者)celebrated the first Thanksgiving Day in America during the second winter in the new world. When they arrived in the first winter, about half of the people died because of the lack of(缺乏)food and bad weather. But the following year, with the help of Indians who showed them how to plant Indian corn, the pilgrims got enough food. They decided December 13, 1621 to be a festival, which is known as the first Thanksgiving Day. The Indians were invited to share the festival. Since then, Thanksgiving Day has been celebrated in America. In 1941, the government named the fourth Thursday in November as the official Thanksgiving Day.
Dating back, it is known that the government wanted the 29th day of June as a day of Thanksgiving. And after discussing it, they all agreed. It is also known that the pilgrims set around at Plymouth Rock on December 11, 1620. Their first winter was devastating. Many of them died because there wasn't enough food. But the harvest(收成)of 1621 was very good. They celebrated it. It is believed that it is the first Thanksgiving Day. It lasted for three days.
Thanksgiving, as we know today, has come a long way from the pilgrims' harvest festival in 1621 and is still popular with Americans. It seems just an event. But as time goes by, it's not the same as the first one. People have brought in more things they want to thank for. Maybe this is the real reason why the festival is still popular in the USA. And as we continue to change, there are more new things for which we can thank.
32. What led to the death of the pilgrims in the first winter?
A. The shortage of food and terrible weather. B. The wars against the native Indians.
C. Some terrible accidents on the sea. D. A kind of deadly disease.
33. When was the first Thanksgiving Day?
A. In November, 1620. B. In December, 1620.
C. In November,1621. D. In December, 1621.
34. What does the underlined word "devastating" in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Strange. B. Pleasant. C. Terrible. D. Different.
35. Why is Thanksgiving Day still popular in the USA?
A. People can celebrate it in a usual way. B. More new things have been brought in it.
C. It makes people remember the pilgrims. D. There is delicious food during the festival.

I am unbelievably proud of my 9-year-old daughter, Emily. She wanted to have a mountain bike of her own, but she didn't want us to buy one for her because she'd like to buy it with the money made all by herself.
In order to buy a mountain bike before Christmas Day, she had been saving her pocket money all the year, as well as doing small jobs like walking the dogs, sending newspapers or cleaning cars for neighbours to earn more money. By Thanksgiving Day, she had managed to collect $ 49, but it wasn't enough to buy a new mountain hike. So I said, "Maybe you can pick one from my bicycle collection in my garage(车库)."
"Thanks, Daddy. But your bikes are too old," she replied. There was no doubt that she was right. All my girl's bikes were extremely old models. A kid today dislikes these models.
As Christmas Day was coming near, Emily and I went to bike shopping. When we left one of the stores, she noticed a volunteer(志愿者)standing next to a big box, who was raising money for poor children. "Can we do something, Daddy?" she asked softly. "Sorry, I'm out of coins." I said. Feeing a little upset, she left with me. I thought that was the end of it.
Emily continued to work hard in December, and nothing special happened. But one day, she took out all her money, laid it on her bed and made a surprising decision, "You know all the money I've been saving?" she said, "I am going to donate(捐赠)it to poor children."
So one cold morning before Christmas, together with her mother and me, Emily handed her total $ 58 to a volunteer raising money for poor children. After putting her money into the big box, she got a broad smile on her face. Her kindness touched me a lot at the moment.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Touched by her act of kindness, I thought I could also do something for poor children with my hike.
I had never thought my daughter's kindness would be paid back so soon.
