In gd imprv, nthing is wrng. Last year, we were asked t draw in the air a type f vehicle which smene else culd start a stry abut. We might be drawing a truck in the air, but they thught it was suppsed t be a car. T carry n the stry, we had t leave ur wn expectatins behind and cncentrate n whatever was presented t us. Gradually, it made us better listeners, and therefre better cnversatinalists. And the learning was filled with laughter.
Nt trying t hide what we are feeling is anther thing I learned frm imprv. Mnths ag, I was t teach an in-cmpany curse at a time when I fund sme ugly red spts n my cheeks. New research has cnnected ultra-prcessed fds t prer brain health. Ultra-prcessed fds, factry-made fds rich in sugar, salt and additives (添加剂), include things like sft drinks, ptat chips, ready-made meals and dairy desserts — basically, anything that isn’t fresh, whle fd.
Fd scientist Barbara Cards frm Mnash University in Australia led the analysis f survey data frm 2,192 participants, wh cmpleted a fd questinnaire and fur cgnitive (认知的) functin tests checking attentin and memry. The participants als prvided physical activity levels and ther health details, which allwed the researchers t calculate their risk f dementia (痴呆).
Fr every 10 percent increase in ultra-prcessed fds in a persn’s diet, there was a perceptible drp f abut 0.05 pints in their ability t fcus. Mre ultra-prcessed fds were assciated with higher dementia risk t, adding abut 0.24 pints t the scre fr each 10 percent increase. “T put ur findings bjectively, a 10 percent increase in ultra-prcessed fds is rughly equal t adding a standard packet f chips t yur daily diet,” Cards says. “In medical terms, this resulted in cnsistently lwer scres n standard cgnitive tests measuring visual attentin and prcessing speed.”
Fllwing a healthy diet such as the Mediterranean diet, which previus studies have assciated with better brain functin, made little difference if ultra-prcessed fds were still eaten.
It’s a very brad categry, which makes it difficult t explain clearly why the relatinship between brain health and diet exists — but researchers have a few theries. “Ultra-prcessed fds ften destry the natural structure f fds and intrduce pssibly harmful substances such as artificial additives and prcessing chemicals,” Cards explains. “Studies f these additives suggest the link between diet and cgnitive functin extends beynd just missing ut n fds knwn t be healthy, pinting t systems linked t the degree f fd prcessing itself.”
Additives are ne pssible explanatin, but there are many thers. Further research will be needed t find ut exactly what’s ging n here.

A.By analyzing data.B.By giving a definitin.
C.By listing examples.D.By making cmparisns.
9.What des the underlined wrd “perceptible” prbably mean in paragraph 3?
A.Inactive.B.Dramatic.C.Nticeable.D.Unimprtant.

B.The fd prcessing level greatly affects cgnitive functin.
C.Artificial additives shuld be strictly limited in fd prductin.
D.Damaged fd structure des mre harm than prcessing chemicals.
11.What might the authr cntinue talking abut?
A.The research n the deep cnnectin.B.The suggestins n chsing healthy fds.
C.The significance f the current research.D.The methds f remving artificial additives.
Americans seem t have given up n reading bks. Surveys shw that ver the curse f a year, almst 40 percent read n bks at all and just 27 percent read between ne and fur bks. Fcused, sustained reading is cncentrated in an increasingly small grup f the ppulatin. Mrever, the cmmitment t reading is much greater amng lder peple than amng yunger nes. The New Yrk Times has reprted a sharp drp in reading amng high schlers.

Mst clleges and universities have nt dealt with this prblem prperly, let alne figured ut hw t respnd.
But ignring it wn’t make it g away. If they are t survive America’s pst-literate (后文字时代的) era and serve sciety in the future, clleges need t invest in prgrams that answer the questin, “Why read?” They must als design curses where the techniques f careful reading are taught.
S, what wuld the value f reading invlve? One culd start with the 19th-century American writer Ralph Wald Emersn, fr whm reading well was secnd-best t clse bservatin f the wrld. He pinted ut the “pleasure we gain frm the best bks” and nted the “great respect mixed with the jy” arising frm reading. Great respect and jy. That is a gd answer.
Reading demands that readers dig int the depths and find meaning acrss them rather than merely examine the surface. While AI can be a pwerful tl, relying n it t summarize texts fr us remves an essential intellectual act: reading carefully and finding ut n ur wn what is meaningful and wrth discussing. Reading raises ur sympathy and develps the mral ability t understand the inner lives f thers.
