finishing sixth in a Suth African race, he traveled t China t cmpete in a 155-mile race acrss the Gbi Desert. On the first day, he nticed a small stray (流浪的) dg wandering arund the campsite, where amused cmpetitrs fed her with their wn
limited supplies. On day tw, Din and the dg tk sme time t warm up t each ther, and she even tried t chew his running equipment. Din sn named her Gbi.
Besides having cmpleted a race requiring remarkable physical strength
tgether, they als vercame emtinally trying circumstances when tasked with
saving a severely wrn-ut cmpetitr, ultimately csting them first place in the race. Thrugh thick and thin, Din and Gbi survived tgether and had n intentins f
parting ways at the finish line. Determined t adpt Gbi and take her back t his hme in Sctland, Din launched a crwdfunding campaign that prved wildly
successful. He later dnated all extra funds t stray dg rescue rganizatins.
Hwever, disaster struck: Gbi went missing in Urumqi while awaiting an fficial apprval t leave China.
Despite the language barrier and the city’s 3 millin ppulatin, Din
immediately flew back t search fr her. By then, their heartwarming stry had gained internatinal media cverage, inspiring hundreds f Chinese vlunteers t jin in his search. Thankfully, Gbi was fund. The reunin did mre than bring them back
tgether; it helped peple f different cultures grw clser tgether as well.
The pair nw live happily in Tucsn. Din has written and published bks
dcumenting his and Gbi’s stry — the children’s bk tells a visual stry thrugh Gbi’s eyes while the adult bk (a New Yrk Times bestseller called Finding Gbi) addresses themes such as Din’s upbringing that drve him nt t leave Gbi behind. Fancy letting a machine mediate (调解) yur argument? It culd be the latest applicatin fr AI. Scientists at Ggle’s DeepMind prject designed what they call the Habermas Machine, a large language AI named after German philspher Jürgen Habermas.
The system wrks by taking written views f individuals within a grup and using them t generate a set f grup statements designed t be acceptable t all.
Grup members can then rate these statements. The mst ppular statement is then returned t participants t assess. Next, the AI mediatin system generates revised statements, which participants again rate. The system then selects the winning
      statement.
The team used the system in a series f experiments invlving a ttal f mre than 5,000 participants wh respnded t varius tpics. The researchers fund the
initial grup statement frm the Habermas Machine was preferred by participants 56% f the time ver a grup statement prduced by human mediatrs.
Part f the mdel’s success, researchers say, lies in its determinatin t give
special weight t dissenting pinin. It was nt the case that participants always
switched pinin t supprt the majrity view. Rather than siding with the majrity, it allwed minrity vices t feel heard.
The AI mediatin system “ffers a new apprach t cllective deliberatin (审议) that avids sme f the limitatins f in-persn deliberatin, including its cst,
limited scale, the ptential fr mediatr bias.” the researchers cnclude. Hwever, the AI mediatin prcess may lack sme f the benefits f in-persn discussin, they
write, such as “nnverbal clues and the pprtunity t build interpersnal
relatinships with ther discussants.” Machine seldm ffers participants the chance t explain their feelings.
In additin, the researchers nte that the AI mediatin system culd generate an ill-infrmed utput if asked t synthesize (合成) human pinins that are based n
limited r biased infrmatin. Thus, the researchers cnclude that if their system is used in the real wrld, it shuld be “embedded in a larger deliberative prcess,
including careful selectin f participants t ensure that a balanced and diverse cmmunity is represented in the debate.”
8 .What is Habermas Machine aimed at?
A .Simplifying rating system. B .Facilitating greater agreement.
C .Managing interpersnal cnflict. D .Hnuring the German philspher.
9 .What des the underlined wrd “dissenting” in paragraph 4 mean?
      A .Infrmed. B .Nvel. C .Differing. D .Decisive.
10 .What may be the disadvantage f the AI-mediated discussins?
A .They lack shared cllective wisdm.
B .They raise participants’ pprtunity cst.
C .They fail t tap int participants’ ptential.
D .They rarely prmte empathy amng participants.
11 .What is the last paragraph mainly abut?
A .Risks f AI mediatin. B .Future AI develpments.
C .Tips n AI mediatin use. D .Ethical cncerns abut AI.

Junk fd is nw a staple (主食) f many Americans’ diets. Advertising
campaigns frm the snack fd cmpanies, ften featuring sprts stars, send the
message that we can neutralize any negative effects f cnsuming their prducts
simply by getting mre physical exercise. But recent studies shw a lack f exercise is nt t blame fr rising besity rates. Bad diets are.
Interventins t help reduce junk fd cnsumptin are especially imprtant fr children and teenagers. Preventin is better than cure because besity is s difficult t treat. Unfrtunately, while health educatin has shwn sme success amng yung
children, teens have been harder t reach.
Nw a large-scale study has tried an innvative apprach t change teenagers’
attitudes twards healthy eating, and the results are prmising. The researchers argued that previus interventins have prbably been unsuccessful because f a majr flaw: they fcused n a future, healthier yu and assumed that this wuld be enugh
mtivatin fr teenagers. In cntrast, the new interventin cleverly explits teenagers’ instinct fr rebelliusness and autnmy, and the value they place n scial justice.
T d this, researchers had students read an article n the fd industry. It
revealed a secret abut the manipulative and deceptive strategies used t make junk
fd mre addictive and characterize the prducts as healthy. The article als
explained hw advertising campaigns specifically target very yung and pr peple, causing harm fr these vulnerable grups. Afterwards, the participants read a fictinal survey f teens wh wanted t “fight back against the cmpanies by buying and
      eating less prcessed fd”.
After the interventin, participants assciated healthy eating with autnmy and scial justice. The teenagers als rated healthy eating as being mre appealing.
Imprtantly, there were als sme prmising effects f the new interventin n actual
behavir. A day later the students were ffered a chice f snacks and drinks in a
seemingly unrelated cntext. The teens chse healthy snacks and drinks (such asfruit r water) mre ften ver unhealthy ptins (like biscuits and sda). Apparently
assciating a healthy diet with teenagers’ wn values seems t be a prmising avenue t prevent besity.
12 .What d we learn abut advertising campaigns frm the snack fd cmpanies? A .They cnvey the idea that their prducts are OK if cnsumers exercise mre.
B .They send the message that bad diets are respnsible fr Americans besity.
C .They usually feature sprts stars t emphasize the benefits f their snack fds.
D .They claim that lack f exercise is t blame fr the increasing besity rates.
13 .What des the passage say abut health educatin?
A .It has shed light n teens’ instinct fr rebellin and autnmy.
B .It has placed much mre emphasis n awareness than n preventin.
C .It has cntributed little t the campaigns against besity
D .It has largely failed t turn teens away frm junk fd.
14 .In what way is the new interventin innvative?
A .It emphasizes peple’s sense f scial respnsibility.
B .It cleverly explits teenagers’ persnal weaknesses
C .It takes advantage f teenagers’ natural inclinatin.
D .It prmises immediate rather than future benefits.
15 .What cnclusin can be drawn frm the new research?
A.A ttally different apprach culd be adpted t cmbat advertising campaigns fr snack fd.
B .An effective interventin has t be fund t persuade teenagers t switch t a healthier lifestyle.
C .Obesity can be hpefully prevented by building links between teenagers’ values and healthy eating.
D .An innvative way t beat besity is t expse fd cmpanies’ manipulative and deceptive practices.
