After ten years in Lndn, I recently relcated t Berlin, and as is custmary when making new friends, the questin “Where are yu frm?” tends t cme up. My hnest answer wuld be, “I dn’t really knw.”
The truth is, mst fus TCKs (Third Culture Kids) — a term cined t describe “children wh mve between cultures befre they have had the pprtunity t fully develp their persnal and cultural identity” — had n chice grwing up but t fllw ur parents arund the wrld.
We’d ften be tld, “Pack yur bags, kids. We’re mving!” and in the blink f an eye, everything wuld change.
By the time I was 18, I had changed schls 10 times, mved cuntries at least 6 times,
acquired a cnfusing accent, and develped bth a lve f travel and a desire fr stability. Being an Indnesian-Italian, I ften felt an identity crisis weighing n me in my teens.
Mving t a new cuntry after spending ten years in the UK — the lngest I have lived
anywhere — has brught back feelings f this cultural cnfusin. Grwing up as a TCK isn’t as charming as many peple wuld expect. It is bth a blessing and a curse (诅咒), beautiful but
unpredictable, and full f adventures. This lack f rts and stability will likely cause issues later
in life.
Yet kids are adaptable. After vercming culture shck, yu start t adjust and see the bigger picture. Yu learn that the wrld is much bigger than yu, and that yur prblems are small. Yu als learn respnsibility, respect different beliefs, and frm yur wn pinins.
Making friends and then lsing tuch teaches yu that everything is temprary.
Grwing up as a TCK, yu rarely realize hw adaptable yu are, until yur lder friends
ften cmment n hw “wise and mature” yu are fr yur age. Travelling frm a yung age
pens yur eyes beynd “Hypernrmalizatin”. It teaches that diversity is nthing t be afraid f. Grwing up as a TCK was tugh, but I wuldn’t trade it fr anything. It has shaped me t be the persn that I am tday — an actual “citizen f the wrld”.
24 .Hw des the authr usually respnd t “Where are yu frm”?
A .By stating her natinality directly. B .By admitting her uncertainty hnestly.
C .By explaining the TCK cncept briefly. D .By describing her experiences in detail.
25 .What des the authr say abut TCKs’ childhd?
A .They enjyed planning their mves.
B .They resisted their parents’ decisins.
C .They maintained their persnal lifestyle.
D .They were frced t adapt t sudden changes.
26 .Which f the fllwing can best describe TCKs’ experiences?
A .Tugh and cnfusing. B .Peaceful and predictable.
C .Rutine but eye-pening. D .Adventurus but beneficial.
27 .What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A .Grwing up as a TCK B .Challenges fr Migratin
C .Hw t Becme a Glbal Citizen D .Hw t Adapt t Diverse Cultures

In Tell Me Where It Hurts, pain psychlgist Rachel Zffness achieves a rare breakthrugh: revealing pain’s cmplexity and ffering practical slutins. Fr decades, pain has been narrwly seen as a direct signal f physical damage. Zffness challenges this, arguing pain is a “cmplex
ccktail” f physical, emtinal, psychlgical and scial ingredients. She uses the “pain recipe”
metaphr t make this accessible: just as ingredients cmbine t make brwnie cakes, these elements create pain.
Zffness illustrates this with tw nail stries. A cnstructin wrker stepped n a 7-inch
nail, screaming in great pain, but the nail missed his ft — his pain was real withut injury. On the cntrary, a man had a 4-inch nail stuck in his face, yet felt little pain. These stries prve pain is nt a reliable indicatr f bdily harm, breaking the traditinal link between damage and
discmfrt.
"" Zffness defines pain as a bipsychscial phenmenn. The U.S. healthcare system
fcuses nly n the bilgical aspect, missing tw-thirds fthe prblem. She criticizes the
system’s ver-reliance n drugs and surgeries, nting that chrnic (慢性的) pain affects millins, yet clinicians ften lack training in hlistic (整体的) care. Many pain sufferers feel unheard, as their nn-physical struggles are ignred. But she ffers hpe: we can cntrl sme “pain
ingredients”. Her bk prvides behaviral strategies-imprving sleep, strengthening scial ties, addressing injuries-fr patients and prviders. She stresses, “Never label pain as incurable.”
Mrever, she highlights that hlistic care requires a shift in mindset. Clinicians must listen t patients’ full experiences, nt just physical symptms. This shift can empwer patients t take an active rle in their recvery, turning them frm passive recipients t active participants. She
als calls fr better educatin f medical prfessinals n the psychlgical aspects f pain. Still, Zffness ends ptimistically. Pain, as a “whle-persn prblem”, needs a “whle-persn
slutin”. Hlistic appraches unlck cuntless paths t relief, ffering real hpe t thse trapped in chrnic pain. This visin culd reshape pain care fr generatins.
28 .Why des Zffness use the “pain recipe” metaphr?
A .T simplify pain’s bilgical causes.
B .T prmte cking-based pain relief.
C .T cmpare pain t cking prcesses.
D .T help explain pain’s cmplex nature.
29 .What d the tw nail stries shw?
A .Severe injuries cause severe pain. B .Pain can exist withut bdily harm.
C .Pain always indicates physical damage. D .Different peple react t pain differently.
30.What is Zffness’ "" s view n the U.S. healthcare system’s handling f chrnic pain?
A .It’s effective fr fcusing n bilgy.
B .It’s advanced fr ffering behaviral treatment.
C .It’s faulty fr verlking psychscial elements.
D .It’s successful fr aviding labeling pain as incurable.
31 .What des the authr imply abut hlistic appraches t pain?
A .They may change hw pain is treated.
B .They ignre the bilgical basis f pain.
C .They are t cmplex t carry ut widely.
D .They have replaced the traditinal methds.

We care abut what ther peple think f us. The reality is that allwing thers’ pinins t guide ur chices and sense f self-wrth can d us a great deal f hurt and harm.
FOPO, in shrt, is the fear f ther peple’s pinins. As human beings, we’ve been

A June 2025 article in the New Yrk Pst described FOMO (the fear f missing ut) as a
hidden epidemic that “mst peple dn’t knw they’re partaking in”. Like FOMO, FOPO is a
relatively new term that describes the dark side f ur very human need and cncern fr validatin (认可), inclusin, and acceptance frm thers. In a wrd, we base ur self-wrth n external
cnditins.
In the bk The First Rule f Mastery: Stp Wrrying Abut What Peple Think f Yu, Dr. Michael Gervais shared his perspectives n what makes ur fear f ther peple’s pinins s
harmful that it makes us “play it safe, and play it small, t avid failure, rather than g fr it”. Mrever, he cautins that caring t much abut ther peple’s pinins can lead t
discnnectin frm ur inner strengths and sense f purpse.
The reality is that we all struggle t sme extent with cncerns and fears f negative
judgments f thers. It is critical that we shuld strive t shift ur fcus away frm ther peple’s pinins t achieving ur gals and realizing ur wn ptential. We we it t urselves t fcus n ur gals and t strive t live ur lives n ur wn terms, free f the fears f judgments f
thers.
32 .What’s paragraph 2 mainly abut?
A .The reasns fr FOPO. B .The definitin fFOPO.
C .The uniqueness fFOPO. D .The negative effects fFOPO.
33 .What is behind FOPO accrding t paragraph 3?
A .Pr perfrmance. B .A lack f special skills.
C .Insufficient preparatin. D .The absence f cnfidence.
34 .What will FOPO lead us t d accrding t Dr. Gervais?
A .Becme mre independent. B .Becme mre cnservative.
C .Try t challenge urselves. D .Fcus n imprving urselves.
35 .What’s the authr’s purpse f writing the last paragraph?
A .T describe a phenmenn. B .T give a warning.
C .T ffer a suggestin. D .T prve a cncept.

If yu want t age well, yu prbably already knw the basics: eat a balanced diet, g fr walks, stay scially engaged. 36 That is strength training. Experts say it matters just as much as the basics, and smetimes even mre.
Fr decades, weightlifting was viewed as the dmain f bdybuilders, pwerlifters, r
yung athletes. 37 Lifting weights — r using yur wn bdyweight against resistance — turns ut t be ne f the mst pwerful tls we have fr prtecting health. It’s nt abut
shaping a six-pack. It’s abut strengthening bnes and muscles, and even lwering the risk f chrnic (慢性的) diseases.
Bnes may feel slid, but they’re surprisingly dynamic. They respnd t the stresses yu put n them, getting strnger when they’re challenged and weaker when they’re nt. Every time
yu d a push-up, r pick up a weight, yu’re putting gentle stress n yur bnes. That pressure acts like a signal t yur bdy. 38 Over time, bnes’ structure gets strnger.
39 Muscle itself is metablically (代谢上) active tissue, meaning it burns calries even when yu’re sitting still. Think fit as the bdy’s built-in engine, quietly wrking alng t
keep yur metablism running. Strength training als ffers prtectin against many f the mst cmmn chrnic diseases f aging.

D .This prcess, hwever, can be risky fr lder adults.
