came frm a small middle schl, the leap t a larger all-girls schl was stressful. I wrried abut fitting in this new envirnment. T make matters even mre daunting, my best friend chse a
different schl, leaving me t brave this new chapter (篇章) n my wn.
Luckily, ur schl wrked hard t ensure freshmen felt cmfrtable during their first year f high schl. On the very first day, we tk part in Tiger Camp, a camp designed t ease us int high schl life. We played team-building games, met ur small grup leaders, and gt t knw
ur classmates better. By the end f the camp, I already felt a sense f belnging.
Once the schl year started, ne f the first majr events I attended was the Club Carnival,

like-minded students.
After I adapted (适应) t the new schl, there were still mre challenges waiting fr me. Hwever, as time went n, I began t develp better time management skills and learned hw t deal with my studies better.

Humans spend apprximately ne-third f their lives sleeping, which means that by the
time yu reach 15 years ld, yu will have slept fr abut 5 years! Hwever, the questin remains:
why d we d it? Sleep has lng been a puzzle fr peple, leading scientists t explre its
mysteries. They have fund that during sleep, ur brains and bdies d nt simply shut dwn; instead, cmplex prcesses unfld.
What causes sleepiness? It’s caused by ur bilgical clck releasing a special chemical signal at the same time daily, signaling it’’s time t wind dwn. The feeling f heaviness cmes frm the buildup f ld nerve messenger chemicals. When the message gets t much, the brain senses that it’s time t sleep. During sleep, the bdy breaks dwn and clears away these ld
messengers, preparing fr a fresh start.
As yu slip int sleep, yur heart and breathing slw dwn, and yur brain ignres the mst sunds and surrundings arund yu. Despite appearances, yur brain remains active during sleep, perfrming essential tasks. Thrughut the night, yu cycle thrugh light, deep, and REM (rapid
eye mvement) sleep stages every 90 minutes. Early n, slw-wave sleep is the primary stage,
aiding in brain cleaning, while twards mrning,REM sleep increases, leading t vivid dreams.
During sleep, yur bdy repairs and grws, creating new skin, muscle, and ther tissues with
released chemicals. It’s als a time fr hrmne (荷尔蒙) prductin, aiding grwth, and bsting the immune (免疫) system t fight infectins.
Scientists still have many questins abut sleep, such as why sme peple need mre sleep than thers and hw certain animals can functin with less sleep. They aim t find ways t
imprve sleep quality. Hwever, ne thing is clear: getting enugh sleep is vital fr health and
intelligence. Think f sleep as a free magic ptin that strengthens yu, aids grwth, bsts
immunity, and enhances intelligence, happiness, and creativity. Simply lie dwn and rest t enjy these benefits.

First impressins can be harsh. One mistake, and yu might feel like yu’ll frever be seen as an idit (笨蛋) in smene’s eyes. Hwever, I believe reality is kinder than that.
Making a first impressin is like trying t keep a dr pen with yur ft. Many
encunters with strangers are brief and may never happen again. Smetimes that can be a blessing:
If the persn yu meet desn’t care t remember yu, yu’ll quickly fade int the crwd f
strangers in their mind, aviding any negative r lasting impressin. Other times, it can be
disappinting — imagine striking up a cnversatin with smene interesting nly t part ways befre exchanging cntact infrmatin.
T avid being frgtten, yu need t d smething memrable — but nt smething
flish. Make an impressin by asking an insightful questin r making smene laugh. This
means taking risks and aviding bland (乏味的) small talk; if that’s all yu ffer, yu’ll likely be pushed t the back f their memry, unlikely t be remembered again.
But what if yu messed up yur first impressin? And ne day yu see them lking at yu, recalling the time yu embarrassed yurself, and they’re walking tward yu thinking, “I knw
yu frm smewhere...”
In that case, yur secnd impressin needs t be better. In my 19 years f making first
impressins — sme nt s great — I’ve fund that peple will give yu a secnd chance if yu give them smething t care abut. Just because yu messed up the first time desn’t mean yu shuld withdraw and stp being interesting. If anything, yu shuld try harder: Listen well, ask relevant questins, smile ften, tell a jke, and share what yu care abut.
Nne f this is a guaranteed “Hw t Make Peple Like Yu” guide, by the way. I’m nt even sure if any f this wrks. But peple seem t like talking t me, s maybe sme f it des wrk.
Anyway, if this is yur first impressin f me, I hpe it’s been a gd ne.
12 .What des paragraph 2 fcus n abut first impressins?
A .They are brief and temprary. B .They are casual and interesting.
C .They are imprtant and lasting. D .They are negative and dynamic.
13 .Hw can yu make a memrable first impressin, accrding t the authr?
A .By engaging in small talk. B .By aviding risky behavir.
C .By demnstrating insight r humr. D .By sharing yur persnal experiences.
14 .What tne des the authr take when discussing the effectiveness f his advice?
A .Playful. B .Uncertain. C .Serius. D .Cnvincing.
15 .What can be the best title fr the passage?
A .Making a Gd First Impressin B .The True Art f First Impressin
C .Why Secnd Impressin Mre D .The Lasting Impact f First Impressin

When we are faced with a crisis, r if we have an imprtant decisin t make,
many f us fall int the trap f ver-thinking. We may keep thinking abut smething cnstantly and t lng. 16 Hw can we stp urselves frm ver-thinking?
Ding smething t distract yurself is a gd idea. Yu can find wrking with yur hands is especially gd. 17 Yur brain simply desn’t have the
resurces t split itself int a third activity, fr example ver-thinking.
18 Studies have shwn that when smene views smething in
excitement and anxiety, the brain is frced t becme stuck in the present because all f yur senses are cmpletely engaged. Yu d nt have time t fcus n smething different, which can cause ver-thinking.
Cnstant wishing, hping and praying d nt give yu any relief. They just keep yu stuck in ne place. But taking the smallest step ff the crisis really matters. It will set things in mtin, making yu like a snwball. 19
The traps are things that cause yur natural ability t react withut yu realizing that there is a cnnectin between the tw. Thus, aviding relevant traps is als a
gd idea. 20 Fr example, if ne f yur clleagues is s negative that she always drags yu dwn, stp hanging ut with her by having lunch alne at a nearby restaurant.
A .This mindset tends t ruin ur day.
B .Put simply, ut f sight, ut f mind.
