After watching her breathe her last, my srrw weighed n me like a stne. The darkness f the days matched the darkness in my heart. Hw I lnged fr just ne mre hug, ne mre “I lve yu” frm my Mm. It was then n the cldest day f the year that I stpped at a gas statin t fill my car’s tank. As the wind cut thrugh me, I lwered my eyes and saw it n tp f sme dirty snw: A Bright, Shiny, New Penny. I remembered the ld saying. I smiled, bent dwn, and picked it up. Suddenly, I felt a wave f lve enter my heart. Warmth surrunded me. My eyes filled with tears. I knew then that Mm was jyfully watching ver me with all f her lve.
Since that day 30 years ag, I have fund at least a thusand pennies. They cme t me everywhere and at all times. Smetimes they lift my spirits n a dwn day. Smetimes they encurage me that I am n the right path. But abve all they always remind me that I am lved.

Based n bne and tth recrds, mammths(猛犸象)were thught t have gne extinct abut 12,000 years ag. But a new genetic sampling technique suggests the great beasts may have stuck arund a lt lnger. The stry is in the sil.
Bnes are rich surces f prehistric genetic infrmatin, but nt the nly nes; items ranging frm shed Ice Age skin cells t pine needles can cntribute t the genetic recrd stred in dirt. Palegeneticists(古遗传学家)have been analyzing "envirnmental DNA" frm sil fr a lng time, but getting rid f nn-DNA material withut destrying these fragile clues is daunting(使人气馁的).
"Envirnmental samples cntain a huge range f ther chemical substances that are hard t separate frm the DNA," says McMaster University geneticist Tyler Murchie. "We can't affrd t lse whatever we can get."
In the new apprach, sil samples are gt and then brken int smaller prtins, stirred and run thrugh a "cld spin methd" t separate as much DNA as pssible. The DNA is then cmpared against an existing genetic library t detect species matches.
The methd is limited because researchers using it need t knw what DNA t lk fr. If a saber-tthed cat species is nt already in the genetic library, the analysis cannt detect that animal. Fr knwn species, hwever, the prcess may yield exciting infrmatin. In their study, the researchers detected abut 2,100 kinds f plants and 180 animals.
Nt yet published results frm ther field sites are yielding similar results, Murchie says, and future fssil discveries culd strengthen the case. "We can use this apprach t identify species in places and times we never knew they existed," he adds.
      8. Why des the authr mentin "mammths" in Paragraph 1?
      A. T present a fact.B. T shw us an extinct animal.
      C. T crrect a mistake.D. T intrduce the tpic f the passage.

      A. Challenging.B. Interesting.
      C. Bring.D. Satisfying.
      10. What is the disadvantage f the new methd?
      A. It is very slw.
      B. It can't detect unknwn animals.
      C. It is nt very accurate.
      D. It can nly be carried ut in the genetic library.
      11. What is the text?
      A. A news reprt.B. A shrt stry.
      C. A bk review.D. A research reprt.
      D
What’s yur pinin n spicy fd? Sme peple cannt handle even the smallest amunt f chili peppers in their dinner while thers can’t get enugh f them.
Scientists have lng been puzzled by why sme peple lve the chili while thers lathe it. Plenty f research has been dne n the subject, dating as far back as the 1970s. Previus results shwed that a lve f chilies is related t childhd experiences, and that cultural influences affect ur taste t. But the latest study has fund that a persn’s lve f spicy fd may be linked t his r her persnality (性格) mre than anything else, CBC News reprted.
“We have always assumed that liking drives intake — we eat what we like and we like what we eat. But n ne has actually directly bthered t cnnect persnality with intake f chili peppers,” said Prfessr Jhn E. Hayes frm Pennsylvania State University, wh led the study.
But befre yu lk at the study, yu shuld first knw that “spicy” is nt a taste, unlike sur, sweet, bitter and salty taste. It is, in fact, a burning feeling that yu feel n the surface f yur tngue. This gt scientists thinking that maybe a lve f spicy fd is brught abut by peple’s lnging fr thrill, smething they usually get frm watching actin mvies r riding a rller caster.
In the study, 97 participants, bth male and female, were asked t fill ut questinnaires abut their persnality, fr example, whether they like new experiences r tend t avid risks. They were then given a glass f water with capsaicin (辣椒素), the plant chemical that makes a chili burn, mixed int it.
By cmparing the answers t the questinnaire and what participants said they felt abut the spicy water, researchers fund that thse wh tended t enjy actin mvies r take risks were abut six times mre likely t enjy the spicy water.
Interestingly, we used t believe that the reasn why sme peple can withstand (耐受) spicy fd is that their tngues have becme less sensitive t it. Hwever, this latest study has fund therwise. “It’s nt that it desn’t burn as badly, but that yu actually learn t like the burning feeling,” Hayes explained.
      12. What’s the meaning f the underlined wrd “lathe” in the secnd paragraph?
      A. Dislike.B. Fear.
      C. Put up with.D. Adapt t.
      13. What did Prfessr Jhn E. Hayes and his team discver frm their study?
      A. What we eat actually helps t develp ur persnality.
      B. Males are mre likely t enjy spicy fd than females.
      C. Thse trying t avid risks tend t be less interested in spicy fd.
      D. Peple are wrng t treat " spicy" as a kind f taste rather than a feeling.
      14. Why d sme peple like spicy fd accrding t the recent study?
      A. Because their taste has becme less sensitive.
      B. Because they lve the burning feeling.
      C. Because they want t challenge themselves.
      D. Because the mre they try spicy fd, the less it burns.
      15. What’s the main idea f the passage?
      A. What ne likes t eat mainly depends n ne’s persnality.
      B. Whether ne enjys spicy fd depends largely n ne’s persnality.
      C. One’s persnal experiences have nthing t d with their taste.
      D. Different peple have different taste.
